Battlestar Galactica Prequel

From Zap2It.com:

The Sci Fi Channel will delve into the backstory of "Battlestar Galactica" with a new series that looks at the years leading up to humanity's devastation by the Cylons.

The prequel, called "Caprica," heads a list of development projects the cable network unveiled Wednesday. Also in the works are a miniseries based on the book "Chariots of the Gods" and series from Jesse Alexander ("Alias"), Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects"), Eric McCormack and Freddie Prinze Jr.

Additionally, legendary B-movie director Roger Corman will produce two films for Sci Fi's Saturday movie franchise: "Cyclops," about the mythical beast wreaking havoc on ancient Rome, and "Supergator," which pretty much explains itself.

"Caprica" will be set more than 50 years prior to the events of "Battlestar Galactica" and focus on the lives of two families -- the Adamas (ancestors of future Galactica commander William) and the Graystones. Humankind's Twelve Colonies are at peace and on the verge of a technological breakthrough: the first Cylon.

As "Battlestar Galactica" is about a lot more than space battles, "Caprica" will be as much family drama as sci-fi tale. Remi Aubuchon ("The Lyon's Den," "24") is writing the pilot script; "Galactica" veterans Ronald D. Moore and David Eick will executive produce it.

"Chariots of the Gods," Erich von Daniken's book purporting to offer evidence that aliens visited Earth several thousand years ago, is being turned into a six-hour miniseries by writer John Whelpley ("Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Andromeda"). The miniseries will center on a soldier whose souvenir from his tour of duty may hold evidence of alien interference with human life since ancient times.

Lets hope this prequel is better than the Star Wars ones.

Hey what ever happened to looking towards the future anyway? I am starting to think that could be a lost art. I mean it is kinda cool thinking about where our favorite characters are from but come on. How about a new idea like expanding on the mysterious characters that we like but know little about?

Hey what ever happened to looking towards the future anyway?

People like shows that are more mirrored to their times, they like stories they can relate too now-a-days. Thats my only logical guess as to why someone would make a show like "Desperate Housewives"...

Thats why all these CSI and Law and Order shows are using plots ripped from the headlines its stupid.

But you wanna know what?

This gum is really tasty :)

All I ask for an opening scene in "Caprica" is breakfast with the Adama's with fresh toast being served by chorme Toaster.

Honestly, I find it suprising Mr. Moore and Eick are taking on another project. Let alone a spinoff prequel. While Galactica has has been a presence since 2003 on Sci Fi...it's only got about 30 epi's in the can. Seems a bit soon to chew on something like "Caprica" in my opinion.

Hey there,

If you read some articles about it, the list that the Sci-Fi Channel has put out is not about shows that are in production but rather more or less on the drawing board. Keep in mind there was a Battlestar Galactica on the drawing board for over a decade before it finally happened. Now I doubt such a thing will happen here, but just remember that it's likely some time away. Series ideas have to be created, developed, pilot made and then the series actually picked up.

All told, if you check the Sci Fi website, you'll see that they even admit it isn't a 100% sure thing. So while it will happen, I don't think it's a major concern of anyone at the moment. They'll probably want to get Galactica into Season 4 or 5 before the new series would even start.

Sometimes I think that's backwards... the headlines are taken from the shows, after people get 'ideas'.

Ah, but there was a time, back in the 80s when the traditional paper and dice RPGs were blamed for killing sprees. "Dungeon's & Dragons made me do it."

I looove video games....

Actually, I think they need to tone down tv, or find someway for kids to not watch violent stuff. And keep 'em away from M rated games.

back on topic...

I noted that "Caprica" is only in the drawing board phase. Yet I'd rather not have R@D worry about another show and keep Galactica so darn Good. When viewing the video blogs by Mr. Eick it seems these guys are having fun on the job which is a plus for a show. Ron in his blogs are a little more serious...still together everything is running as smooth as can be. I am curious who pitched the idea of a spin off of Galactica the network or the Creators?
