New Trek Movie Announced!

46 posts in this topic

Hey all,

There is HOPE! HOPE I TELL YOU!

From: SciFi-Wire - 24 April

"Berman Not Part Of Trek 11

Longtime Star Trek writer and producer Rick Berman, who joined the franchise at the feet of creator Gene Roddenberry, will not be involved in the proposed 11th Trek film, to be directed by Mission: Impossible III helmer J.J. Abrams, SCI FI Wire has learned.

A Paramount spokesperson confirmed that Berman—who started with Trek under Roddenberry in 1987 as a writer and producer on TV's Star Trek: The Next Generation—would not take part in Abrams' film. "J.J. is also a producer, and Rick Berman is not involved in any way," the representative confirmed over the weekend.

It will mark the first time that a Trek project has not had Berman's creative input in more than 18 years. Berman produced and co-wrote the last four films and co-created the TV series Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; he also wrote, contributed story ideas to or produced all Trek incarnations since the original series. Berman's last film, Star Trek: Nemesis, tanked at the box office, and Berman's last series, Enterprise, was canceled by UPN after only four seasons because of poor ratings.

The new Trek film will be written by Abrams and his M:I III writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who worked with Abrams on the Alias series. The new Trek film will reportedly go back to the first meeting of James T. Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy and deal with their first missions into space. Orci and Kurtzman previously wrote for TV's Xena: Warrior Princess and co-wrote the films The Legend of Zorro, The Island and the upcoming Transformers: The Movie.

Berman has previously said he wasn't sure about the future of the Star Trek franchise, but always hoped to revive and be involved in the franchise somehow. "

Yeah, especially since Nemesis tanked, invalidating the rule of thumb that while the odd-numbered ST movies are box office lightweights, the even-numbered movies are moderately to very successful. ::scratches head, pondering that one::

What is there to ponder? The statistic was right 90% of the time so far. As predictive measures go that is pretty darn good.

I could bring up the whole Packers-Redskins game that was suposed to put Kerry in the office, but obviously even the Gods are fallable.

I guess the thing I haven't really thought about is that this is a film, not a series or, I believe, a pilot for a series.

In that way, it may just work as an entirely different beast. The general public are probably 'Trekked out' what with all the shows in syndication and always on tv. A completely different beast may be just what the show needs in order to continue the franchise.

So I threw away my misgivings and began thinking: Who, out of today's A list celebs, would we want to play Kirk and Spock in their early days?? :P

Oh come on, you know Shatner and Nimoy are getting the parts.

Seriously though, I have been thinking...And don't really know. Just don't have Tom Cruise.

What also somewhat concerns me is the fact that "new management" doesn't seem to have any idea of where to take the franchise next. By that I mean, we're not "moving forward" or anything like that...but instead having to return to characters that were originally created over forty years ago. I mean let's be honest...as painful as it is to admit...there are a large number of Star Trek fans that have never see The Original Series. There are many that have never seen the first six movies and have no intention of doing so.

I can see where you’d be worried about that Fred, because I’m kind of one of those people. I have a vague recollection of watching TOS reruns with my dad when I was little, and the only TOS movie I think I watched straight through is “the one with the whales”. See, I don’t even know the name! I’ve seen the others in bits and pieces, but don’t remember a whole lot from any of them.

The thing is though, I’d still be open to a movie about Kirk and Spock or even just the TOS era. It’s not my first choice, that’s for sure. But if they do it well, I’d actually appreciate the chance to be drawn in to that era. It would help to get past some of the cheesy props and just enjoy the characters. I’d dare to say that Star Trek fans would give it a chance no matter what it is. And after that, it’s just about whether or not it’s a well made movie, which we have to hope it will be.

The following is a bit of an update, taken from Empire Online. (4/25)

Exclusive: The Truth About Star Trek XI

Fans around the world whooped for joy last week at news that the Star Trek franchise was being resuscitated with M:I:3 director JJ Abrams at the helm. News that it would adopt the long-mooted concept of Kirk and Spock's youthful adventures at Starfleet Academy provoked a more mixed reaction. Those who thought such a move sacrilege can rest easy though because, as Empire discovered in an interview today with Abrams himself, the story is nothing of the sort.

"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," says the director with a hint of regret. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."

But the million dollar question is, what will it be about? Unsurprisingly, Abrams isn't saying ("We've made a pact not to discuss any specifics") but the Lost creator is a confirmed Original Series fan so don't be surprised if his take on the series does indeed take place around the era of Kirk and co, or if some of the established characters do make a reappearance. "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think that… you know, they could live again."

Basically we don’t know that it’s an Academy film. We don’t know much of anything, but Abrams has confessed to having a thing for TOS. I’ve heard a lot of people worried about it being “Star Trek: 90210” and I have to say I don’t have that same concern. I’d be more concerned about that if they were creating an Academy series (not film) with new characters. I just don’t think they’d go that route if they were doing a movie about Kirk and Spock, and more than likely a large portion of the movie would not be planet-based.

Edit: I should add that the only thing that makes me cautious at this point would be the hint of a reboot. But as there's absolutely no reason to justify thinking that right now, it's not a big deal. Also Happy Birthday Fred, I just noticed that at the bottom of the index. :)

Found this at rottentomatoes.com:

========================

Scott Weinberg writes: "Cinescape recently received an Affleck-centric piece of gossip that's just too entertaining not to share. Keep in mind that this is all unfounded conjecture at this point, but how would you guys like to see Ben Affleck as ... Captain Kirk?!?!

From Cinescape: "Some others had heard that Ben has also been talking to Paramount about possibly playing a lead role in a new Star Trek film from J.J Abrams. Apparently Abrams is coming down to visit the set in a few weeks, to visit Michelle Monaghan, whom he directed in Mission: Impossible 3, so that might add some more fuel to the fire. If it comes off, he's apparently playing the hero. Don't know if that's Captain Kirk or some other nameless male protagonist...but that's the gist of it."

There's also some chit-chat about Affleck signing on for a second Jack Ryan adventure ("Red Rabbit"), so head on over and see if you believe this report. Me, I'll wait for a confirmation before I share my own opinion. (I do think Affleck gets a lot of undeserved scorn, anyway.)"

::ducks all the rotten tomatoes being thrown::
