Star Trek Military Ranks

( Someone has to add in the "First Lieutenant" which I'm not sure how you abbriviate )

"First Lieutenant" is actually an Army/Marine/Air Force rank.  For the benefit of the sims that have a Marine contingent it breaks down like this:

Ensign = Second Lieutenant

Lieutenant Junior Grade = First Lieutenant

Lieutenant = Captain

Lieutenant Commander = Major

Commander = Lieutenant Colonial

Captain = Colonial

Hey there,

Something you need to keep in mind is that different sims use different ranking system. There is no real "standard" forum wide. :o

Fred-

My reason for wanting the list isn't because I don't know the ranking system, my reason was that I didn't know what the abbrieviations for each rank were. So, when someone put "ltjg_name" I had no idea what the "Jg" stood for. How would you abbrieveiate First Lieutenant?

Webby- Feel free to delete this, I just wanted to make sure everyone understood my reasoning behind the question I posted for the FAQ's.

 Here are some three letter abberviations (with a couple of exceptions) for the above mentioned ranks:

Adm = Admiral

Cpt = Captain

Col = Colonel

Cdr = Commander

Ens = Ensign

FLt = First Lieutenant

Lt   = Lieutenant

LtC = Lieutenant Colonel (also seen as LtCol)

LtC = Lieutenant Commaner (also seen as LtCdr)

LtJG = Lieutenant Junior Grade

Maj = Major

Dac

(sorry if this is in the wrong place, Randy.)

Part of the confusing thing for people, I think, is that in the movies and episodes no one really used the words "Lieutenant Junior Grade" or "Lieutenant JG".  They simply called each other "Lieutenant" and if you needed anything more specific than that you had to look at their collar.  (When I was in the Army I was a Private E-1, then a Private E-2, than a Private First Class (E-3).  Even as a PFC I was often simply called the generic "Private".  It's not the official rank, just an efficient shortening.)

These posts were part of the FAQ topic pinned in the Academy forum.

I've moved them here so ya'll could continue discussion of the issue here.

I think it is an interesting topic, but it was it was getting a little off track in the other location.  So feel free to continue here with it!

:: points upwards to Dac's post ::

Actually, if your gonna leave anything in the FAQ, put her answers to my question, which was something like "What are the abbreviations for ranks?" Her answer was better than mine.

However, you should add "Cmdr = Commander" in there to, I've seen that one. "LtCmdr = Lieutenant Commander" also needs to be there.

True, but I was trying to use the rank abbreviations that you would acutally see today were you to set foot upon a military installation.  The three letter abbreviations are the most commonly used/seen.
