Belthesar

::Waves::

Hey all. It's been a few years since I've done something like this, but I'm glad to have found a non-AOhelL-centric way to participate. :-) I'm not new to text-based RP, and have been doing so (including simming here and there) for about 8-9 years now.

About my character, his name is David Belthesar. I'm sure I'll grab a pic here somewhere, so until I can find one I'll leave hair and eye color out of the question. :-D But as for all that fun stuff goes, I'm glad to have found this again, and I look forward to being here.

Hello and Welcome to STSF. This is a good crew here.

Only thing you need to watch out for is the T'Venus SFly'Trap - it was brought here by the Rihannsu and placed in the Lobby - it snaps.

Check out the Moose Tips, Help, and Rules sections. These pretty much give an idea of how STSF operates specifically.

And don't believe all these crazy rumors about cadets getting killed by the GM's in the acad...**AHHHHHHHH** **MRRPHHHHH** !!!

<ACTION> Kansas is attacked by the T'Venus SFly'Trap

Happy Simming!

- Kansas >^..^<

I take full blame for "The Plant" intro. I started that a while ago. It may show up in an academy at some point...if I become a GM...yeah, now thats a scary thought.

Beware the plant..... ;)

Welcome aboard Belthesar.

Hello. I am the STSF Resident Egomaniac, and I would like to welcome you to the Star Trek Simulation Forum at stsf.net (as opposed to stsf.com; try simming there :P !) Just remember that the secret to simming is to have fun and the secret word is "isodop". ;) :P

May you die well. :P

Agreed. It is fortunate we are not required to use a specific network such as ICQ, Yahoo, AOL, MSN, etc. It would keep us sealed off from other trekkies who may use a different instant messenger and would not benefit from our interaction. Thankfully installing Java seems simpler and safer than chatting on something like IRC.

Not necessarily. You're right about AIM, ICQ, MSN, etc, but, IRC is a platform-agnostic standard. It's probably more cross-platform than Java, and, unlike Java, it's available in free/open-source clients and servers. I think the reason we use the Java-based clients is more historical and based on the specifics of how our hosting is set up.

There is nothing any more "unsafe" about IRC than our Java-based client. As with any chatroom, it's what's done in it that makes it safe or unsafe. One should still be wary of giving out personal information, passwords, and such on our chatrooms an boards. Just like an IRC room, anyone on the Internet can access them!

Welcome, David! You'll find several of us are refugees from that netherworld. ;) I'm sure I've known you in another life, but if not, I look forward to meeting you - and simming with you, of course.

IRC was developed in the late 1980's. If you can find a current version of Java that works on the older OS's from the late 1980's, I will be very surprised. IRC is a protocol specification, and there are some very lightweight (low resource) clients floating around. Our Java-based system has a much higher set of minimum system requirements. Java is not a chat protocol, it's a programming language and virtual machine runtime. The chat program has to run on top of the language's virtual machine, which is naturally much more resource intensive than a single client program.

The advantage of what we've got is that, for now, it works for us. And, if it ain't broke, one should not fix it.
