Personally I think it's not so radical to believe that celestial positions have an effect on your mood, and personality...but I put very little faith in that little tidbit in the newspaper has much validity.

I suppose it's a question of how much the planets gravity or position might affect our moods. People say that erie things happen when there is a full moon, like lots of births, but do you think that maybe possible something like where the planets are on the 22nd of this month will affect things?

No question about full moons, it's a long recorded thing... thats where we get the word lunatic. The pressures on our brains makes us do crazy things, plus it alters the weather and weather has a strong effect our moods.

Okay, here we go:

Tiger

Tiger people are sensitive, given to deep thinking, capable of great sympathy. They can be extremely short-tempered, however. Other people have great respect for them, but sometimes tiger people come into conflict with older people or those in authority. sometimes Tiger people cannot make up their minds, which can result in a poor, hasty decision or a sound decision arrived at too late. They are suspicious of others, but they are courageous and powerful.

Cancer

Positive Traits: kind, loving, emotional, intuitive, imaginative, shrewd, cautious, protective and sympathetic.

Negative Traits: changeable, moody, over-emotional, touchy, untidy, clinging, unable to "let go," and a tendency to wallow in self-pity.

Likes: hobbies, romance, children, parties, home and country.

Dislikes: failure, opposition, aggravating situations, being told what to do and being given advice...whether good or bad.

Some traits I share, others I do not, or at least, I think I don't. I'd say its a pretty fair summing up of me. ;)

It wasn't true in 1978 in the US

Here's the birthday frequency data. There's a long-period seasonal variation (more births during the summer) and a short period fluctuation (it's about 7 days or so, but might be random noise). There is no discernible oscillation with a period of a 30 day Gregorian calendar month, or a 29 or 27 day lunar calendar month.

I tried doing a Fourier transform of the data, but, as far as I could tell from my first try, there isn't really enough data to get anything meaningful out of it.

Although the moon's, and sun's gravity might have (small) effects on humans, I doubt that faraway planets or stars could have any effect, because their magnitudes are incredibly small on earth.

I was browsing the news and found this article on msn.com:

Top Dating Tips for 2006

By the Astrocenter Team

Valentine's Day may be the most romantic day of the year. But are you ready to make 2006 your most romantic year yet? With the help of astrology, you can drastically increase your chances of finding the love of your life in the next 12 months.

The following astrologically inspired dating are intended to help guide you through 2006 in the realm of dating and romance. The best of love and luck to you and yours!

Aries:

(March 20 - April 18)

Expect an old flame to be back in your life as soon as February, with roses in one hand, candy in the other, and their tail between their legs. Your Top Dating Tip for 2006, then, is this: Keep reminding yourself that if it didn't work once, twice is doubtful. If your returning admirer keeps at it all year, your resistance may finally weaken between October and November. That's when Mercury, the ruler of communication, will spend 10 weeks in passionate Scorpio and your house of intimate contacts. Since Mercury usually spends just two weeks in a sign, this unusually long trek means he's out to get your attention, big time. Careful!

Taurus:

(April 19 - May 19)

You love nothing more than privacy - and spending a few hours all alone in the company of someone you adore. You'll have more than one chance for that type of scenario during 2006, especially at the start of the year and through March 3, when bold, fiery Mars will wander though your house of personality and appearance. You'll be attracting as much attention as a firecracker, so there's only one pace to go: medium. Keep that fire burning, of course - it'll be great fun - but keep it on simmer. Bet you'll find some company who'll be more than happy to keep that flame going throughout the year.

Gemini:

(May 20 - June 20)

After years of dealing with the most intense planet of all in your house of one-to-one relationships - Pluto himself, the astrological "separated-at-birth" twin of Darth Vader, you're understandably pretty darned drained. Well, it won't happen just yet, but this year, you'll be able to lessen Pluto's effects - just a tad, but enough to make it more bearable. To make this happen, follow your Top Dating Tip: Dig, and dig deep. Dig into the past, into your feelings, and into whatever you've been avoiding. Then, resolve not to bury any of those unproductive behaviors again. Okay, so it won't be easy. It's still the best way to get your brand new romance show on the road.

Cancer:

(June 21 - July 21)

When it comes to romance, 2006 will provide you with two absolutely wonderful planetary allies: the Moon, your own planet and the ruler of emotions, and loving Venus, who just adores the Moon. Needless to say, you're all set. When it comes to prime time for you to tap into the best of these energies at the same time, look to February 3 through March 5. Your Top Dating Tip is an important one, so pay attention: When you meet someone new, ignore any age differences - ignore any differences, in fact. Concentrate on the commonalities, not the differences. That's what will keep you together.

Leo:

(July 22 - August 21)

This year, let go of the memories of all the crazies the universe sent your way over 2005, regardless of how the introductions occurred. During 2006, if you're a single Lion, you'll have a lot more than relationships to think about - but a good, long-lasting one can't help but be the end result. In a nutshell, honesty will be an issue, especially during June and July. Your mission at that time - and your Top Dating Tip - is to tone down your libido just a little. Yes, we know that's never been easy - but it just might land you in the midst of what you're really after: True Love. Good luck!

Virgo:

(August 22 - September 22)

You'll have the mixed blessings of two Eclipses in your sign during 2006. Eclipses are never famous for messing around or doing anything halfway. Be ready to activate your urge to create a new personality or appearance on March 14 and September 22. But on September 7, a Lunar Eclipse will occur in your house of relationships, illuminating all the great things you can bring to partnerships and what you'll expect from them, too. The year will keep you busy on the love front, but these Eclipses? Lions, tigers and bears. Oh, my! Your Top Dating Tip: Be bold, be brave - and then, go get 'em.

Libra:

(September 23 - October 22)

The last time you felt this way, you got married, moved in, or at least spent lots of time talking about it. It's no surprise, then, that since late December 2005 through March 5, 2006, Venus, whose jurisdiction is love, will bring those feelings right back to the forefront of your mind. She'll be in sturdy, practical, and realistic Capricorn, making her way slowly, elegantly, and thoughtfully through your house of emotions. In other words, even if you're beset by "That Feeling" - the one that might prompt you to hop on the next flight to Vegas to find an Elvis look-a-like lover - press the pause button. In other words, your Top Dating Tip is: Stop, look, listen - and wait.

Scorpio:

(October 23 - November 21)

You probably thought you were busy last year, but that was nothing compared to what's coming up during 2006 - especially during autumn. Remember how you and your friends giggled about getting you a social secretary last year? Well, by late summer of 2006, you'll probably need an entire personal staff just to keep your social life in order. Yes, really. To add to your incredible sexuality, November will bring you five planets and a New Moon, all in your sign in your house of personality and appearance. Your Top Dating Tip: Enjoy it, baby. It's your year!

Sagittarius:

(November 22 - December 20)

For several years, Pluto in your sign has attracted all kinds of new and interesting individuals to your love life and, in the process, has helped you to adapt to any and all new situations. In particular, you've learned to adapt to the strange new people who've come along. There are specific periods you'll want to be on your toes for in 2006. From May 3 through May 29, the lovely lady Venus - the heavens' purveyor of all that's sweet, sentimental, and passionate - will be dashing impetuously through Aries and your house of love affairs. You'll just love it. Your Top Dating Tip: Make the very most of it all, from the temptation to the attention - everything. It's just the way you like it!

Capricorn:

(December 21 - January 18)

The most helpful Dating Tip you'll receive in 2006 will arrive via Saturn, your very own planet, who advises you to follow-through with your partners in a big way. Saturn is the "Ring-Bearer" himself, the bringer of all things stable, solid, and lasting. He's spent the past seven months in your house of intimate matters, straightening out joint financial affairs you'd been worried sick over and leveling out deep relationship issues. The good news is that he'll stay snuggled up in this private place for the rest of the year, continuing his work by making sure that all promises made - every last one of them - will be kept.

Aquarius:

(January 19 - February 17)

With Neptune in your house of personality for several years, your urge to take care of "underlings" of all kinds has been turned up on high. You like being known as a friend of the underdog. In fact, the deeper in trouble and the more they need you, the better. Your views about them are usually plastered all over your car, too. You're the reigning royalty of bumper-stickers. Your Top Dating Tip for the year, however, is this: It's fine to lend a couch to your old college buddy who needs a place to crash, or help out at the soup kitchen; but ask yourself if you really want to start dating the folks you're giving a hand to.

Pisces:

(February 18 - March 19)

Will 2006 provide you with romance, dear Pisces? Well, for starters, your own planet, Neptune, the most magical, mystical energy of all, is currently functioning at her most potent. That means you can quite literally lure anyone or anything your way with little or no effort. Add in a series of Eclipses (all magical on their own merits) and several planets who'll spend a lot longer than usual tiptoeing delicately through your famously psychic sign, and there's only one Top Dating Tip for the fanciful Fish: Be very, very careful what you wish for, because if you even think about it twice, there's absolutely no doubt that you'll get it.

I was born on the cusp of Aries/Taurus, so usually there's two horoscopes that "could" apply to me. On the Chinese calendar, I was born in the year of the rabbit.

Aries Characteristics

Aries is the first of the twelve zodiacs. It represents the beginning of all things and usually displays a strong desire to lead. Aries is adventurous, energetic, pioneering, and courageous. Arians always want to be on top. They tend to be frank and open but also self-centered and willful. Arians love adventure and almost has no fear. All is done with great enthusiasm which affects the people around them. Aries is loyal to family and friends. Aries is ruled by the forceful Mars. Arians are good athletes, doctors, explorers, soldiers, and leaders. Sometimes they like physical, emotional and mental extremes but Arians should be careful not to go too far with their extremism.

Aries attractions: Gemini, Leo, Libra, Scorpio

Aries colors: All shades of red

Aries stones: diamond, ruby, emerald, amethyst

Aries plants: fern, poppy

Aries celebrities: Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Marlon Brando, Charlie Chaplin, Bach, Adolf Hitler, Al Gore, Aretha Franklin, Camille Paglia, Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Elton John, Warren Beatty, Francis Ford Coppola, Gloria Steinem, Harry Houdini, Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Campbell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Leonard Nimoy, Rosie O'Donnell, Tennessee Williams, Thomas Jefferson, Vincent Van Gogh.

Taurus Characteristics

Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac, representing growth and development. Taurus is patient, reliable, warmhearted, loving, persistent, and determined. It likes few changes which determines its reserved and practical nature. Taurueans show a great interest in all physical matters. Taurus is faithful to friends and lovers. However, when insulted Taurueans remember it forever. No other sign in the zodiac is closer to earth then Taurus. Taurus is ruled by Venus and seeks harmony with its surroundings. Taureans like being part of a team. However, they have reputation for stubbornness. Taureans are good teachers, scientists, designers, and chefs.

Taurus attractions: Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn

Taurus colors: All shades of blue, green

Taurus stones: rose quartz, emerald

Taurus plants: daisy, lily

Taurus celebrities: Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, Jack Nicholson, Barbra Streisand, Benjamin Spock, Billy Joel, Bing Crosby, Bono, Candice Bergen, Charlotte Bronte, Cher, Audrey Hepburn, Frank Capra, Jerry Seinfeld, Katharine Hepburn, Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Elizabeth II, Sigmund Freud, Stevie Wonder, William Shakespeare.

Rabbit Characteristics

Timid and attractive, the Rabbits of the Chinese Zodiac tend to act more like bunnies, whether they like it or not! This Sign is extremely popular and has a wide circle of family and friends. Its compassionate nature leads it to be very protective of those it holds dear, but where romance is concerned, the Rabbit's sentimentality can lead it to idealize relationships. The sweet, sensitive Rabbit often ends up giving more of itself to a partner than is realistic or healthy. The good news is, when this Sign goes off-balance, the Rabbit's core group of friends and its stable home life help bring it back to center.

The Rabbit is a rather delicate Sign that needs a solid base in order to thrive. Lacking close, supportive friends and family, the Rabbit might just break down in tears at the first sign of conflict. Emotional upsets in this Sign's life can even lead to physical illnesses. Rabbits dislike arguments and other conflict and will try anything to avoid a fight; this results in something of a pushover nature. Rabbits can also lapse into pessimism and may seem stuck in life -- often to mask their insecure natures. Rabbits tend to move through life's lessons at their own, rather contemplative pace; it's a waste of time to become exasperated with this Sign's seeming disinterest in facing its problems and conquering them.

With the right partner -- meaning someone whose high principles won't allow it to take advantage of this sensitive, giving Sign -- the Rabbit can make an incredibly loving and protective partner or family member. Rabbits love to entertain at home and always make sure their house is comfortable and tastefully-furnished. What Rabbits need most is a stronger sense of self-worth and the security that comes with it. Their discerning natures, coupled with some hard-won assertiveness, will help these happy creatures go far.

The most compatible match for a Rabbit is the Goat or the Pig.

The point of this thread was to provide our opinions on astrology and my opinion was challenged. That's fine. I should always be prepared to defend what I believe.

In my opinion, I don't see this thread as harmless, because I don't see astrology as harmless. It may be a minority perspective here, but it is a legitimate perspective nonetheless, and one that should be represented.

Thanks for understanding. :P

As a christian myself Im going with Gromy. B)

I wonder what sign/symbol is the one for "blondes" :-) Maybe I should be looking up Patron Saints instead!

Don't think they've figger'd that one out yet, Sis.

And if we're going with Patron Saints, then we might as well adopt St. Jude for both the Olie and the Arcadia. :P

Fear a Taurus born in the Year of the Ox!

Okay, I love this crap, so I couldn't resist looking it up again. To answer Garn's earlier question of whether we read other people's signs to see if they also apply, my answer would be yes, I've read the other signs (of the Chinese calender anyway) and most do not apply. For me, Dragon is a great fit. Aquarious readings seem cheesier.

Dragon:

The Dragon is one of the most powerful and lucky Signs of the Chinese Zodiac. Its warm heart makes the Dragon's brash, fiery energy far more palatable. This is a giving, intelligent and tenacious Sign that knows exactly what it wants and is determined to get it. Dragons possess a certain natural, charming charisma that ensures they can always influence their peers and often find themselves the center of attention in social situations. This Sign is truly blessed, too; Dragons are considered to be very lucky in love! The Dragon's friends are always keen to hear what this firebrand has to say and when it comes to dispensing advice, the Dragon has the floor.

Its ego can get in the Dragon's way, but even so, this larger-than-life creature has a knack for initiating projects and keeping the troops motivated. According to Dragons, it's their natural born right to lead the way -- because who else could do it so surely and so well? As lucky as they are, Dragons have a good chance of achieving considerable material wealth during their lifetimes, although it isn't mere money that's this Sign's main motivation. Power is what the Dragon wants and truly believes it deserves. Dragons are quite the opportunists, forever searching for ways in which to consolidate their considerable power. Contrary to all this strength and fire, a weakened Dragon is a sad sack, a creature that refuses to take defeat with even a modicum of grace.

The role of leader is the only one the Dragon wants, the better from which to give orders and be king of the hill. They make solid leaders, too, knowing instinctively what needs to be done to stay on top. Crossing the Dragon is never a good idea -- this beast can singe! A valuable life lesson for this clever creature would be to absorb the principles of flexibility, compassion and tolerance. Being high and mighty can serve to inspire others, but it also keeps Dragons from living their lives to the fullest. If Dragons can learn to balance their quest for success with an appreciation for the little things, their life will be more than worthwhile.

The most compatible match for a Dragon is the Monkey or the Rat.

Wood element:

Like the rings of a tree circle out and expand through the years, so too do those born under the Chinese Astrology Element of Wood. You Wood personalities seek chances for growth and for renewal in all you do, 'branching out' (excuse the pun!) whenever possible. Your open, expansive mind makes you a compassionate and generous friend, colleague and ally. You understand the inherent value of what you and those around you possess, and your confidence allows you to act upon your beliefs.

While your strength forms the backbone of any social group or partnership you're a part of, you could have a tendency to be a bit too systematic in your thinking, and sometimes your passivity allows others to overwhelm and inhibit you. Don't let yourself be lost in a vast forest, an anonymous tree among millions of others. Make your mark on the world -- you're especially adept at business ventures.

Famous Wood Signs:

Russell Crowe <---Ooo!

Angelina Jolie

Joaquin Phoenix

Aquarius January 20 - February 18:

Aquarius is the eleventh Sign of the Zodiac, and Aquarians are the perfect representatives for the Age of Aquarius. Those born under this Sign have the social conscience needed to carry us into the new millennium. These folks are humanitarian, philanthropic (R---ight....) and keenly interested in making the world a better place. Along those lines, they'd like to make the world work better, which is why they focus much of their energy on our social institutions and how they work (or don't work). Aquarians are visionaries, progressive souls who love to spend time thinking about how things can be better. They are also quick to engage others in this process, which is why they have so many friends and acquaintances. Making the world a better place is a collaborative effort for Aquarians.

The Sign of Aquarius is symbolized by the Water Bearer. In much the same way that the Water Bearer brings that precious liquid as a gift, Aquarians shower the world with their thoughts and new ideas. Luckily for Aquarians (and the rest of us), they are at a near-genius level, so their minds churn out some amazing things. Their thought process is also inventive and original. While Aquarians are happy to bestow these ideas as a gift with no strings attached, they are much happier when the rest of the world agrees with them. Naysayers will quickly find out that Aquarians can be impatient, even temperamental, with those who disagree. Yes, these folks can be quite fixed in their opinions, in keeping with the Fixed Quality assigned to this Sign. Even though Aquarians are happy to give, and they do, it's often on their terms and within their comfort level. Generally, that means ample space, since these folks are freedom-loving and individualistic and need to roam (and yes, they do enjoy travel). While Aquarians are generally sympathetic and compassionate, they like it when things go their own quirky way. Some might call their behavior eccentric (and they would be right), but when you consider that the Aquarian's heart is truly in the right place, a few oddities should be overlooked. In their own way, Aquarians treasure their many friends and acquaintances and want to give back as much as they can.
