The Pandorians really should come back. A Cadet can't know fear untill he has had his arm's, and leg's torn from his body.

Uhhhhhhhh is being thrown to the ground by an angry Klingon then practically cut open by a Bant'Leth close to knowing fear?

The Pandarians were a race of giant evil pandas who brought terror to the crews of academies in STSF, mainly during the summer of 2003. They were presumed dead after their ship was destoryed in circa. August, 2003 but they showed up again the following year. They've yet to make another appearance since.

LOL! You know your laughing too hard when the cat comes over to investigate.

Giant evil pandas? I love it.

Yes the academy can be lethal but if the sim is going well you shouldn't have time to die. It makes such a mess for the CJAN to clean off the carpet.

Not to mention our special effects budget. A9 has had to go out on the street and beg for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, just so we don't have to charge Academy tuition. :-)

Note to self - next time, let the GMs help out the cadets. I made a total fool of myself as ops last friday. I didn't pay attention to the sim, I probably missed every order given to me, all because I helped out a cadet. not that that's bad, because now he has a friend, and knows the basics, but I bet the GMs opinions of me went down alot... :P what does Ops do, anyway? I mean, I think I scanned something, but that's about it. I don't know how the sim ended, all I know is that the AT beamed down, there was some dust, something about lifesigns, then I stopped paying attention, and the sim ended... I need to make up for that HORRIBLE display of roleplaying... ><

There is nothing wrong with helping out a fellow cadet, but yes, since you are just starting out, it's better to concentrate on getting yourself situated and let the GM's handle that sort of thing. :P

OPS is basically the "administrative assistant" of the starship.

Ops could be responsible for keeping in contact with various departments, letting departments know certain orders from the Captain, letting one department know when another department requires their services, routes communications, keeps track of away teams, initiates beam outs at times, or sets up departmental meetings, runs scans on the ship or planet or whatever. OPS just basically keeps the day to day departmental / shipboard activities running smoothly.

Don't be too hard on yourself. That's what academies are for, to learn how to sim. I still drop in on the academies, and still learn new things or techniques on how to sim.

- Kansas >^..^<

There's a whole thread somewhere on these boards about the OPS position. Basically, though, Kansas is right. OPS is usually used as a "second officer" (third in command) and a communications relay between the command staff and the crew who are not on the bridge.

OPS also takes over a number of functions when the other officer is otherwise occupied. Most commonly, helm and tactical.

Was Harry Kim 3rd in command of Voyager? Was Chief O'Brian 3rd in command of DS9?

We are confused because Data was also 2nd Officer and Science Officer, and O'Brian was also a Chief Engineer of sorts. The only person who was really Ops and nothing else was Kim. He was essentially responsible for the ship's infrastructure - computers, power distribution, etc.

I think we were discussing the role of OPS in academies, not on the TV shows.

As you rightly point out, there is very little TV evidence for what OPS does.

ENT has no OPS position, and doesn't even have a seat where the TNG OPS console is.

TOS has no OPS position (TOS has something a bit closer to, but not quite, two officers sharing HELM and TAC in the two front seats).

TNG has OPS dualing as CSCI.

DS9 uses the term "chief of operations" quite differently from the way we use OPS on starships. To us, it is the equivalent of CENG.

VOY has an OPS position, and it's something of an all-in-one post - sometimes, he's an engineer, sometimes he's security, and sometimes he's command.

In academies, I usually consider OPS to be a high-level bridge position that does the duties I described above. Since we usually simplify and leave infrastructure to the engineers, it at least gives OPS something to do. I also frequently combine it with HELM, because HELM often spends long periods of time doing nothing.
