I am new, and need some serious help

67 posts in this topic

Hey, I'm new to this Role-Playing game, and want to know how exactly I'm supposed to make a character. I understand that you type in the name you want to use when you log into the chat, but how do I save the character name I make, and password protect it? Also, couldn't I just put a higher rank into my name, without actually being promoted? is there protection against cheating like that too?

Hi, and welcome to STSF!

You do not have to save your character name, nor do you have to password protect it if you do not want to. You reserve a name by signing up for the boards and choosing a login password (which you seem to have already done).

If you would like more information about simming in general, we have an excellent help/getting started section, and tips are posted in the STSF Academy board. There are also a lot of chat logs in the Academy sims folder, where you can see what happens at a sim. Once you've read the materials (which you should do before playing, they're really helpful!), you can also ask questions on these boards, watch an academy sim without playing, or jump in and play and ask questions of the GM's via private messages in the chat rooms.

As a cadet, you are not required to make a complete character. You do not need a bio or backstory yet. It is best to play the academy as a generic human (or Romulan, at occasional Monday academies), because there is little time during each one-hour academy for any real character development.

You could put in any name you want (except for an already reserved name), and you could, in theory, put in any rank you want. It doesn't help anyone cheat, because, everyone starts in the STSF Academy and no matter what your name says, every academy player (except for the game masters) has the same effective rank as a cadet. It is helpful, but not required, that you use a name beginning with Cadet_ or Cdt_. That way, the GM's are more likely to realize immediately that you're looking to graduate, and there's a chance that you'll get a little more attention for that.

Once you graduate from the academy, you are given the rank of ensign, and are offered the opportunity to join an advanced sim. Advanced sims keep records of player's rank, and it would be frowned upon to simply "claim" a rank you don't have, and very well known among the GMs and players that you did it. Playing within the rules is one of the requirements of being an STSF player.

okay when you log in it automatically senses then name and password so type it in once and you're set. And yes technically you could do that but if you attempt to simm in that name the GMs will find out and you'll be reprimanded if you continually do it.

Grrrr Lo'Ami you beat me again

Also ::looks around:: okay good no Zephrah, Eagle, or Kansas. Also wacth out for the man eating T'Venus flytrap in the lobb-

AGHH HELP ME PLEASE OH GOD HELP ME!!!!!!

ok, that's good to know. I wouldn't want to play a game where someone could come in labeled as the captain, and have nothing done about it. Would it be wise to re-register my forum name so it begins with Cdt_ and has a more Role-Play freindly name than Star Trekkian? (Like Cdt_Zack or something)

You can use any board name you want. There are some people who use board names that are totally unrelated to their character names. Most people use board names similar to their chat names, but without ranks, under the assumption that they will eventually be promoted.

It may be helpful to use the same board and character names, so it is easily identifiable that both your identities are the same person.

You can always choose a "real" character name after you graduate and decide what sim you'll be on and what species you'll play. The webmaster can change a board name, if you ask him via PM.

Alright, thank you. I'm hoping to attend the academy tonight at 7:00. I think I will go with the name Cdt_Zack for my sim name, sounds good to me.

Well, everyone else has given you good advice. If you decide to change your forum name, I would suggest not adding a rank to it. Presumably you won't be a cadet (or ensign, or so on) forever.

Don't forget to check out Moose's tips at the top of this forum. There's one that's a great help if it's your first time in the academy.

Welcome to STSF!

Are you allowed to change your simming name once you graduate the academy, and can you change your name (add abbreviations) without logging out of the sim?

Welcom to STSF Zack, have fun. A great way to get to know how things are done is just jump right in a start simming. I guess reading the rules & tips is good to.

Thanks for your help. Now that I think about it, maybe cdt_zack isn't a good name. I play Everquest 2 for Roleplaying, and one thing I've learned is that you MUST have a good name, just helps you to get immersed... how about... Cdt_Khan...

Yes. All you have to do is send a board PM to the Webmaster from your current account, and give him your new name. He will change it for you. There is no way for regular users to change their own names.

I don't know of any way to change your chat name without logging on and off.
