On the Road Again

“On the Road Again”

Lieutenant Dave Grey

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

We appear to be on the road to adventure again. Gallivanting around the cosmos at faster-than-light speeds, distorting space-time and manipulating matter as we see fit. It feels good to once again have an objective, some task upon which we can focus our efforts.

Commodore Moose . . . is gone. I am still quite confused as to what has happened. His method of departure is questionable, and his reasons even more unknown, yet he remains lost. Apparently Starfleet has determined that people other than the Challenger crew are more suited to tracking the Commodore. Maybe they’re right . . . but then again, maybe they are desk jockeys who too long have sat in the chair and made decisions about events light-years away.

Commander Moore . . . is a captain now. As capable as officers come, he definitely deserves it. In fact, it would be strange to have anyone else in command of the ship—I’m not sure how a stranger would fare as captain of Challenger. As a crew, we’re a tightly bound unit now, we’ve been through the crucible more than once and will most likely be through it over and over again; that’s our job.

Speaking of strangers, if Commander—no, Captain—Moore is the commanding officer, obviously a new executive officer needs to be assigned. The universe, duly represented by Starfleet Command, chose Commander Amanda Cole. I hear she is a MACO or some such thing, but was not really paying attention at the meeting and don’t really remember any discussion afterward. While certainly a stranger right now, I’m sure she’ll become a valued member of the crew once we go through our first mission together. The same thing happened to the entire crew after that unfortunate incident with the warp drive nearly a year ago. . . .

Speaking of missions, I frankly have no clue where we are going nor what we plan to do when we get there. However, the ship is at warp and we’re heading off in some direction to do something. There are Earthly concerns that plague my soul, but this form of freedom that being a member of Challenger bestows only serves to lift me above the problems, at least for a little. My philosophical discussion with T’Parek did me good—there’s nothing like a little philosophical discussion to cheer me up. I think I’ll try being optimistic, at least for a little while.
