Reflections on Ice

Ahh, contentment.  Bch was sitting on top of the giant beast she had felled just moments before.  A chill morning wind ruffled through the beast’s thick fur and over Bch’s hunt-sweaty body.  It was delightfully refreshing, and she lifted her hair to let the breeze cool her neck.

There was something about the cold that she particularly enjoyed.  Though it was not that she didn’t enjoy other terrains...  In fact, it had been good to drop some leather in the heat of the last planet.  It would have been better if she hadn’t lost the garments…  (This was becoming an annoying recurrence).

But leather would not be a problem after today.  Bch looked at the massive beast under her and grinned.  Clothes, boots, a new rug perhaps, and food enough for several good feasts at least.  The live meat in food storage wasn’t bad, but after seven years, change was most definitely welcome wherever it could be found.

Perhaps that was what she enjoyed about this icy terrain.  It was a change.  If she thought about it, the Qob’s periodic stops on new planets each brought something different from the last.  They had seen dry desserts, vast oceans, deep lakes, and this frozen beast-bearer.  Hunting these worlds made the interim confinement on the ship acceptable.

And just maybe…  Bch looked out across the icy valley…  Just maybe it was preferable to living one’s entire existence on one world?  As much as she wondered how her life would have been if she’d remained on her lands on QonoS all these years, she also began to wonder what the loss to her life would have been by not being on the Qob hurling through uncharted space and finding world after world on a journey none would likely ever follow.
