"Over the river and through the woods..."

It was a largely uneventful shift in Engineering.  No urgent repairs or maintenance required, Lagh Prekip is on 24 hrs medical leave, Ensign Koralev finished his psych evaluation. As I suspected he would, Dr. Garnoopy certified that Koralev was indeed temporarily insane during his attack.  He is fit for duty but may need to be watched to prevent a relapse in the future.

A good engineer mostly stays in engineering.  A good Chief, however, recognizes the need to leave his work area occasionally.  Since time allowed for it I headed to the MeH. It turned out to be a wise move.  Several officers were planning an away mission to barter with local natives on a nearby planet for medical supplies. This culture is pre-warp, but has apparently been trading with off-worlders for some time.  Chances of cultural contamination are minimal, although still a risk.  It is for this reason I volunteered for the mission.

This will not be my first away mission.  There was that time the crew was captured by those alien scientists, followed by my rescue of the hunting party from that blizzard, but this *is* the first time I am able to prepare in advance.  I've received a list from the MRF of their most needed supplies, and have put together a list of spare parts and supplies we can afford to barter with.

I understand the HoD is distrustful of bartering and negotiation.  I suspect it is something Klingons do not have much experience with.  True it is not the most efficient form of commerce, but in the absence of a universal currency it is the next best thing.  I've studied bartering and negotiating at the Ferengi School of Business before enrolling at Starfleet Academy so my role will be as the bargaining advisor.  Not your typical engineering assignment.

I placed Koralev in charge of Engineering and began to pack. I don't know how long this mission will last so I packed clothing appropriate for the terrain, wristlight, tricorder equipped with a universal translator, spare power supply, deck of cards, and some food and camping supplies.  I will be taking a hand phaser, and I will also be asking for permission to take a disassembled phaser rifle in my pack, with repeating pulse and sniper options, and some explosives, just in case. This mission may turn out to keep more than my negotiating skills fresh.
