Deep Space Nine

Hey every1,

I'm trying to complete my DVD collection by buying all of the DS9 DVDs. When I buy series, I try not to start at the first season, so I started with season 4. Now, I watched the first season when it first came on television, then decided to quit watching, but when I bought the fourth season, I suddenly got hooked and instantly bought season 5 and 6. Was DS9 ALWAYS this good?? Maybe I didn't watch it when it was new because of it being on a station, but now I'm kicking myself in the head for not watching. I know this topic is a bit dry, but for some odd reason I wanted to post my renewed love for all things Trek, which now includes DS9.

I remember watching the opening episode when it first aired. It stunk so bad I turned it off. It did get better toward the end but it did not reach the quality of TNG or VOY.

I have to agree, TNG was lightening in a bottle. I did get into Voy more than DS9, but ENT caught my attention by far, even though I had doubts about them moving the timeline to before TOS. But, still I can't get enough of the Dominion plot in DS9, I keep watching them over.

DS9 definitely got better as the series continued. It matured and the story arc developed nicely over the series, turning it into a very compelling adventure.

I love everything about ds9 except those damn bajorans. They're always whining!

Deep Space Nine took off with the Dominion War Story Arc in my opinion. The action really increased as well as the character intrigue (primarily secondary characters....FoundersDukat, Martok, and the Cardassian Tailor/Spy Garek).

Now it seems most drama shows employ story arcs as opposed to stand alone epis..IE: Stargate, Battlestar Galactica to name two. DS9 of course was hardly the orignator in using the concept of story arcs..Babylon 5 employed them too.

Those pretending to be Bajorans aren't much better, especially... what's his face, Sandle Rica or something?

But honestly, could Major Kira ever get that bug out her butt? I don't blame Nana Visitor, her acting was pretty damn solid, but whenever the writers wrote an episode dealing entirely with a Bajoran issue she became a royal pain in my own backside.

I will admit Kira had a tendency to vacillate wildly in her emotions, depending on the situation, though with her history, I think that can be forgiven. As for other Bajorans, few were really explored in depth, but Kai Opaka and Vedek Bareil were pretty solid, non-whiny characters, and of course as bad as Winn was, she had layers. I think the Bajorans were a good species for DS9, because they had issues (a lot, admittedly), and had a complex social structure and history which were explored pretty well on the show. Many of the other species in the Trek universe had a very narrowly defined attitude and for the most part, you knew what you were going to get as soon as you saw one. With the Bajorans, you didn't know if you were getting a saint or a devil, a lover or a fighter. They were a pretty good analogue for modern humanity.

Shrug, bah! I swear I laughed by the time she had her hundredth "Oh we're allowed to be mean cos the cardassians were mean to us" speech. ;)

Well it's a justification centuries old on Earth. It's why the cycle of hatred continues. As Gandhi said, "Peace attained through violence is tantamount to defeat for it is momentary," since violence and hatred tend to beget violence and hate.

While the Bajorans did tend to annoy me, I do think it's a relevant social commentary on how continuing hatred is senseless...maybe that's just the pacifist in me. ;)

As they say, war is good for business.

"Can you promise me that you will not let one Jem'Hadar soldier set foot on Bajor? Can you promise me that you will use your entire fleet to protect our planet, even if it means sacrificing other worlds like Vulcan, or Andor, or Berengaria, or perhaps even Earth itself?" Kai Winn

lol, That Kai, she always cracked me up.

Her unreasonable demands, and he pure evil are a little too much for me.

How did someone so evil become a spiritual leader, anyways?

Well, as we all know power corrupts, but in Kai's case she corrupted the power. I'm going to assume she bitched and moaned her way to power.....as did most Bajorans on DS9....::Sighs:: They could've made the bajorans a little bit better

Or dig out Dante's Inferno. The references are right there.
