This URL gets you information to travel from Canada to the US. "Proof of citizenship" can be either a passport or a birth certificate.

I noticed that first site had information on non-US citizens entering the US from Canada, Shadow. For US citizens entering the US from Canada, you might find this site helpful:

Do you have a price range for hotels?

Well, the only guideline is "reasonable." Most of us who show up make enough money to travel through the country (at least once a year, yes?) so it shouldn't be Motel 6, and it shouldn't be the penthouse of the Trump Plaza. I know that in the past we took advantage of special package prices at the Las Vegas Hilton ($95/night a few years back), so that shouldn't be a hard and fast number, but simply a guideline.

Clock's a tickin! ::grin::

Just a couple of important reminders, that you're bound to see again:

1. It's not an official stsf event. Which just means that it's a group of adult nerds who like to take a vacation and hang out once a year. As much as Blurox reminds me of Julie on The Love Boat, you wouldn't want to be expecting her to be your tour guide, lol.

2. It's an adult vacation (in age anyway, not mentality). We don't do anything illegal or debaucherous (for the most part), but we won't, won't, won't be responsible for anyone underage. (This hasn't been a problem for years, but in the past there were parents who wanted to drop their teenagers off and have us entertain them for the weekend, lol). We leave our kids (and almost all spouses) behind. :(

3. We *truely* enjoy meeting new nerds. Join the Dark Side.

Toronto, I say... Toronto! :( ::Waves his Toronto sign in the air::

Edit: If not, then Chicago I guess. It's not that far, and that Shatner paintball thing looks cool. :(

hehe I have to drop out of the race, other trips I'll be taking, ontop of the need to save up for college will likely push me out of the next shore leave, unless you guys do decided to take it to the Twin Cities. Do it for Kroells.

As the Divine Ms. Huff mentioned, the clock's a tickin' and while there has been a lot of "Ooooh, have Shore Leave here!" there haven't been any real concrete proposals for the SLSC (Shore Leave Selection Committee) to give considerable thought to.

We'd like to announce the "winner" by Halloween so that everyone has as much lead time as possible to save their pennies to attend NerdFest. (I save my tips!). So, if you're serious about wanting us to come to "your town" take a look again at Atragon's qualificaiton list and put something together that is more than a bunch of links and then send it to the Big Man himself.

Methinks that some folks are forgetting the first criteria from the original post:

A ) The location needs to have easy travel access within the Continental US

Jonesboro Ark.

Its about an hour away from memphis Ten.

We have a nice YMCA pool and park that has a fun pool.

Not sure about any conventions but then again its on memphises door step.

We have a couple movies theares.... Conserts... stuff like that.

Holiday Inn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The towns pretty small. only about 55,000 people.

It may be too small but if you want something way differnt than sin city u got it.

(Also we are in a dry county if anybody drinks. You have to bring yo own booze.)

And you were requesting a name change? What about Sim Summit or Sim Summit '06? (Acronym S.S.- or if you wanted to get really cheesy, name the thing Universal Sim Summit and have the acronym be U.S.S. ::grin:: )

There is certainly a lot to do in Chicago - Sears Tower, John Hancock building, the new Millenium Park, Navy Pier, etc. - there is an outfit at the Pier that has a cruise that goes around the lake with dinner, drinks, and dancing - and Chicago has some of the best restaurants in the world. But the hotels are not cheap if you want to stay at a decent place (Trust me, I've been there three times in the last year or so) and there is no guarantee you can even get a place unless you reserve your room well in advance. The city is a victim of it's own success.

As for a name change I am fine with keeping it at Shore Leave West.

I think that removes it from consideration.

This is extra credit for Kestra's Chicago proposal:

"Where no Sim has Gone Before"

I may come up with some things for you about Chicago as well. It makes sense, I'll drive the 240miles if I have to. :( Meet us in the middle :(

Don't forget one of the criteria:

"A nice pool and a date that can provide nice pool weather (we're not looking for a February ShoreLeave)"

When I think of Chicago, I think of "The Windy City" - is this really somewhere that has good pool weather?

If you come during the summer, it gets pretty hot here. The conventions in September though, when it cools down a bit. I'd say it's been in the 70s or 80s here most of the month so far, reaching into the 90s maybe once or twice.

I'm actually withdrawing my proposal, so I'm not overly concerned if you pick somewhere with better weather. Anyone who wants to pick up the Chicago proposal, be my guest.

I had to read that twice because I saw "siN summit" not "sim summit" :(

While we're not a pack of booze hounds, I agree with Dumbass (sees a snowball appear in H*ll). No dry counties. No Semi-dry counties either.

Indoor pools can be lovely. Moose and I will tell you that the indoor waterparks (and outdoor) in the Wisconsin Dells are something to behold. However; as this is a "grown-up" vacation do we really want to be in place that is swarming with every kid in the Midwest? (I vote NO). Ahhh Vegas, no place like it in the world.

It should totally be in Orlando, I mean come on? What better weather is there than Florida in the summer??? You'd be begging to go into the pool. And with the attractions located around the place, if something is planned in advance, you can get major discounts on hotels and tickets to theme park attractions.

There are hundreds of hotels to choose from, and you have the mouse in the backyard, or you can go to awesome Universal Studios, all of which accomidate fairly large groups (If were talking over 10 of course. :()

I'll of course put together a much nice presentation by the end of the month, but come on, we all know you wanna come to Orlando. :(

<<And it'll keep me from traveling ::Cackles::>>

EDIT: Sadly enough, the major nerd conventions are always in the Winter or Fall season around here, so major nerd thing to attend... but how can you beat "Nerds Bowling!"...

Yea... I'll come up with something better.

Buzz!! Wrong answer.......

There's no way I can lay by the pool for 5 days and work on my tan if I'm inside.

And indoor pools attract kids. No kids...that's why I'm leaving mine at home. This is time for the adults!

Yes, whats this..this..THING we all have against kids? I mean, I dont have any, but Im sure MOST of YOU all do...heh heh.

Chicago is OK, but its...HUGE! Too much traffic and congestion. Florida is OK too, but its...BUGGY and filled with GATORS. Ew.

I would say lets have it in Columbus Ohio in August! Theres a convention that meets right around the same time and the Ohio State Fair is up and running in that time too. Also, there are plenty of pools. Theres Wyandote Lake, the Columbus Zoo, and the Convention center with plenty to do on down time. You can also travel on an off day (If you want) to Kings Island or The Beach, which is always a blast, of you like that sort of thing. Ill get more info, if anyone is interested.

We also have plenty of inexpensive hotels in the downtown area or in the burbs.

Hey, Ohio is neutral. And you CAN gamble...just buy you some scratch offs...
