What do the envelopes mean?

Is it possible to change the envelope icons on the far left of each thread heading?

I ask because they seem arbitrary. There's various colors...some have a black dot on them while some do not. And when you lock a topic it has a small red lock thats a bit difficult for me to see (especially without my glasses)...though even then there's not much distinction between the locked envelope and the regular ones ::squints:: maybe its just me.

Could we maybe get...like...1 envelope color for topics...with a dot for topics that have been replied to...or a lock without an envelope so it stands out more?

Well, I don't know about changing the locked topic icons, but as for the arbitrary factor...there's a key at the bottom of the page that shows what the different colors mean (not all pages, but the main one and the View New Posts one). Blue is default, red is for "hot topics" and green is for polls. The envelopes get greyed out a bit if there are no new replies in that one since you last read it <_<

I honestly have no idea about the ones with dots, and I've been wondering that one myself.

Yeah, I had that same problem myself, but I think the envelopes with the black dots means that you replied to that topic. Otherwise, the ledgend in the bottom describes all.

Hey there,

Well, personally, with the key at the bottom of each subfolder it makes sense to me. If people are seeing a problem understanding the symbols then perhaps something new can be investigated, but...given not really certain it should be made an urgent priority on the site. I know Senior Webmaster has a long list of items he'd like to get done. <_<

How can a hot topic have no new replies?

It's based off of your last visit. Say a post has 200 replies to it.... that would qualify as a hot topic. But if there has not been any posts to that thread in the past 2 weeks, there is no new posts in it.

Still doesn't explain the dots, but I have my own theory, the dots are evil space aliens infecting the board with it's eggs which will then take over the World! WE'RE DOOMED!

The dots are more for board moderators and administrators. Generally when editing is done in the thread, it's marked with a dot so we know there are edited sections inside.

The most common reason for the dot is for when a moderator merges a topic with another topic. There are many times it's more practical to just combine two topics into the same.
