  1. Yes, I don't know if I've ever read more compelling sci-babble. (grounded in real science of course)
  2. i don't know what that is
  3. Laptops are easy. I easisly upgrated my last one right away when I got it. I would not recommend upgrading it from Apple while building the machine, this is overpriced, get your RAM third party (dealram.com) and install it yourself, instructions are easy to find online. As for desktops, I would imagine the Powermac towers are just as easy as your PC box, from what I read the imac is as simple as taking a plate off of the bottom of the monitor/computer and sliding a new stick in. So I'm sure it's comparable to PCs for both price and ease, I've had a fine experience with it.
  4. Even if that's not his real name :) Welcome, hope to see you around! -Not Sam
  5. For me, the spirit of idealistic infrastructure leads me to make voting choices :). His ideas are remembered, or PREmembered (does that make sense?) fondly
  6. Ok, so I hate to reply to something in this thread, thus continuing a topic. But was this comment for or against? :)
  7. two fingers on trackpad, click.
  8. You got that right, why do you think I use a number of different apps for that stuff? Maybe...but it is a better product that makes my digital life easier and nicer, those gold walls are looking ok. It's quite nice. I'm really getting into the guilding....really liking it. For Lo, who can build and maintain his own well running Linux machine, that's great. But it's not for everybody, for the average person who wants a nice, reliable, enjoyable way to manage the information in their lives, I would still say the Mac is the good choice. Also for the slightly above average (in terms of use) person who needs to work in a digital arts environment, it's also a great choice. Lo'Ami is right, non-mac isn't the problem, it's just the crappy OS released by the big company who's leading(ish) in sales right now. Muon, I think you made the right choice.
  9. I'm sorry I couldn't weigh in earlier. I would have toted the mac. I have used one for four years now. Getting used to the interface is all about time, just spend time doing lots of things, look up the keyboard shortcuts, maybe watch a Steve Jobs keynote or two where he's introduced the features in the past, the point is that you will get used to doing things quick and easy ways and remember them because they make sense. As for right click, I'm not sure if the new editions actually do have the integrated right click in the solid button, you can hold the control key and click for right functions, you can also enable two finger scrolling on the trackpad, so using one finger moves the cursor, using two scrolls left and right, when this is on, holding two fingers and clicking right clicks. I'm not a gamer, so I can't speak to the video card issue, I am a musician and can speak to the superior integrated nature of software hardware and ultimately an ease of use of the top of the line equipment out there for almost all music related things. And Kent is right, it's shinier, prettier and works. It networks better, it's file structure is more solid. Its updates, unlike windows are full re-writes instead of building on old nasty broken code (i.e. Outlook, Word, etc). A lot of stuff is open source too which is nice. On doc files, there is openoffice.org, but I found that annoying with X11, on the rare occasion that I need an actual doc file or spreadsheet, I use a freeware/open source app called Neo Office, which works fine. I bought Pages for professional publications, and let me tell you, it's refreshing when the concept of things like word processors aren't changed for 15 years and then someone writes a nice intuitive one, it's a great program. For most things though, I just use textedit, which may sound weird, but it's just a nice, simple space to type and print something, no bells and whistles needed. Integration of Mail/Calendar/Address is awesome, especially now with my iPhone. Basically I love using Apple products/software and would pretty much never ever choose to work on a Windows system unless I had to.
  10. Here we see Atragon and his GM council pushing the pram.
  11. Ok. I'll stop being paranoid. And I too dislike group work, because it involves socialization with people I don't know, and that's not for me. I was in a class where every other research report was a group assignment and the groups got mixed up for each one. It was quite annoying.
  12. <- paranoid.
  13. ...as in a planet at the unfashionable end of the left spiral?
  14. Unfortunately, though you say your survey results will be annonymous, filling out this survey and emailing it to you allows you to know the age, location, gender etc of STSF users. I would be happy to help you in your survey, but I (and I'm sure other stsfers) would appreciate a truly annonymous way of getting this information to you. -Sam
  15. Ok, Lo'Ami is the winner. His use of the last image as a caption for this one is both creative and hilarious. Runner Up is Eagle, for his very intellectual physics take on the picture. Take it away Lo
  16. i'll give one more day.
  17. I think that Lo'Ami was trying to assign the caption about the balcony and ground level to the car picture...If I'm right...that's hilarious and you all have some stiff competition for this one. ;)
  18. Yay, I won! Sorry if I kept you waiting...will find picture soon.
  19. "Dear Abby Sema'J" A Joint Log from Lt's Kent and Sema'J SD 10809.20 <begin> Sam Sema'J sat in a new office. It was the counselor's office, adjacent to sickbay. It was much bigger than his Chief Engineer's office, which was a small, utilitarian cube with space for a desk, two chairs, and all the padds you could ever shelf. This room was about three times its size, and wonderfully not cube shaped. It had plush carpeted walls and extremely comfortable chairs of various shapes placed around the room, including a freudian style fainting couch. Sam liked that touch, it was delightfully tacky. These chairs were all arranged to face a wide slab of a desk with a small control panel on it. This panel allowed the user to quickly and easily set the tone of the room, lights, music, temperature. It also had the useful feature of clouding the two soundproof glass doors to the office (one into the corridor and one into Main Sickbay) to dark gray opaque, a very useful feature for privacy. Sam couldn't exactly complain about the office change. Behind his desk was a chair that matched the comfort of the others, he imagined he would be sitting in it a lot. Behind this was a low book shelf with a computer console on it, it was sort of an awkward place for a console...but Sam supposed it probably shouldn't sit between him and his patients, so he decided to get used to it. It was at this computer that he sat, throwing himself into his new position by working up an efficient scheduling system for the floods of patient's he was expecting. It was because he was so engrossed in this task that Sam failed to hear the swoosh of the glass door, thus defeating the purpose of it being glass. Samantha Kent rubbed her neck a little nervously as she walked in. She felt she had to talk to someone about what had been going on lately with Brian and Malik. She wasn't sure it should be a relative stranger, but she had decided to take her chances. Samantha saw that the man behind the desk had not heard her come in. She paused slightly before giving a little cough to rouse his attention, "Excuse me, I'm looking for Lt. Sema'J." Sam jumped and then turned around, slightly embarrassed, "Oh! I'm sorry. I'm Lt. Sema'J, please call me Sam. Can I help you?" She laughed softly seeing the slightly older man jump. "Ah, oh...um, I'm Lt. Kent". She paused as she grinned, "You can call me Sam too, I guess. Samantha..." she trailed off. He gave a slight laugh as she nervously got the words out, "Well that might get confusing. I still don't know how I can help you" he said with a smile. Samantha gave a small chuckle, "Right...I, well, I was hoping to have someone to talk to, I guess. I've had a lot on my mind lately." Sam nodded as he smiled again, "Well that's exactly why I'm here." He motioned to the assortment of chairs, "Please have a seat anywhere," he offered as he pressed the console on the desk and the doors clouded. "What's on your mind?" She returned his smile, feeling a little more at ease with the situation and his welcoming tone as she slid herself into one of the chairs behind her. She looked at him, considering how to begin. "I...well, it's probably not exactly a unique problem, you probably get this all the time, but...ah, well, I've had...romance complications lately." Sam's jaw dropped in his mind. He was dumbfounded that this was his first case. He of course kept a sensitive poker face, but was truly internally stunned. "Alright, well that can be a very important and confusing area in many people's lives, would you mind giving me some specifics?" Sam slid his chair back and tossed his feet up on the desk, preparing for what he suspected could be a long haul. Samantha chuckled again and returned to her nervous neck rubbing, "Well...there are two guys who have been interested in me lately and...well, I think I've been leading them on. I haven't really handled it well, to be honest, start to finish." Sam suddenly put two and two together in his head and got four. He realized that he'd seen this woman's personnel file up on a screen in engineering. He had been busy at the time and hadn't really taken note of it, but now that he thought about it, Archie had been flipping back and fourth between the profile and his research on the Ineiche biotech. Sam's jaw dropped once again in his head...but he was still able to maintain an expressionless exterior. "I see. Well, describe your interest in both these men...and then talk about why you consider your handling to be 'bad'". She thought for a while, "Well...Mal...that's Malik Pilot, he's in security, and Brian Riley--helm...I got to know both of them pretty well during the Axrekrav affair. They both started showing interest in me, and...they're both worth it...made it a pretty hard situation and I've been trying for months not to really choose. And...that's not really a good choice, I don't think...20/20 hindsight and all that, It was unfair." Sam nodded as he took this in, "You say they are both 'worth it', what is it you are looking for. I think you should have a clear picture of that in your mind, or your heart, whichever way you choose to look at it. What kind of relationship seriousness you're in search of is a good thing to know for yourself. Depending on how serious that is, you should be up front about that to people with whom a relationship is a possibility. That's one way to look at it. The other way is that you should simply let yourself relax about any prospects of the future, or 'right' choices and just enjoy time spent with a person, and trust that the rest will follow." He paused momentarily, "It sounds as though you feel like some damage has been done. Have you made any kind of "choice" at this point?" Samantha let out a dry laugh, "That's the problem...I hadn't quite figured out what I wanted to do, and so I was concentrating on just not hurting anyone. but...yes...I did, and don't know if it made the problem better or worse." He nodded slowly, "So you're between a rock and a hard place." Sam pondered for a moment while he tried to find some direction for her, "You said that you became close with both...would you go as far as to say that the one who was *not* chosen still cares about your best interest, that is, what's best for you purely on the basis of being your friend?" Samantha showed a worried look and spoke emphatically, "I hope so! Mal's a good man, I think. He said he wanted to remain friends...but he may have just been saying that to make me feel better. I know I hurt him..." Sam quickly answered, knowing where he was going now, "But *that* can't be changed. You need to make whatever remorse that you yourself are feeling clear to him, but what I think is more important is that you: #1, know that the choice you did make is the right one for you, because knowing yourself is a *huge* part of being in a relationship. And #2, make it clear to Malik that the choice is right. If he wants what's best for you as a friend, he should be ok with that. But knowing yourself, and making what's right for you known to others is all that's in your control. What are your thoughts on that?" She paused, taking his words in. She was definitely feeling a little more relaxed just having someone to talk this out with. She answered slowly, "I did the right thing...I'm pretty sure I did, at least. Brian...Brian needs help, and I think I can give it to him. Malik will make it one way or the other...but I think I need to talk to him again. The last time we talked wasn't...hostile, exactly, but definitely awkward." He nodded with a slight smile, "I'm sure it was...if I had the answer to how to make situations like that un-awkward...I'd probably have a higher position than this one." Sam became serious again, "I'd be careful though."You said you entered into a relationship with Brian in order to help and support him. That's not a bad thing, but balance is *critical* in areas like that. You can't become his sole support and his issues can't 100% keep him from being a supportive partner to you. Do you see where I'm going with this?" Samantha nodded, acknowledging his point, "I know that...and I know that I may be setting myself up for trouble, really...but I can't back out on him." She paused, "I love him, I want him to be happy, I want him to know that I can stick with him." Sam nodded, deciding not to touch on the 'declaration of love' thing, "Ok, well I'd advise against such commitment to an unbalance of support. But like I said, knowing what is right for you is up to you. So I think that you should take some time to think about that commitment and what's right for you. I think you should make that clear to both men, and I think that we should talk about this in a week so you can tell me how that all went and what your thoughts and feelings are after you've had time to let all this settle. What do you think? She nodded, thinking that this other Sam might be making sense, "Yeah...I mean, I know I need to talk to both of them again. It's just...an odd situation, one I haven't really been in before. I mean," she said with a laugh, "I'm not one of those scientists who brries herself in the books *all* the time but...this is a little beyond my scope. And..yeah, I would like to talk to you again I think." She paused as a grin spread across her face, "It's..it's good to have someone to listen, which is probably a little cliché, but it's true." He returned her smile, "Well I'm glad I could help you hash things out a little. Does this time next week work for you?" Samantha nodded, "Yes..that should be fine" "Well alright then," he said as he punched her name into his new schedule. "Thanks for coming in." He tapped his desk and the doors faded back to clear. She nodded and smiled one last time, "Thank *you*, Sam...I appreciate your time. "Certainly," he said with a final smile as she got up to leave. Sam shook his head...He figured he couldn't be choosey with this being his first and only case...and it still felt good having flexed his therapeutic muscles helping her talk this out. He noticed a figure approaching the sickbay-side door. Sam's face drooped as he saw Dr. Ty approaching with a slightly too cheery smile. It was time for flexing Ty's therapeutic muscles...on Sam's neurological condition. Why did the offices have to be right next to each other. Sam got up and left the office, trying his hardest not to return the cheery smile. <end>

A personally designed helm station and keeping most automatic systems offline are the staples of a comfortable flying experience. Unfortunately,Sam was virtually unable to fly his first mission. A psychological anomoly caused by demonic creatures inhabiting a planet in the Kaurader System paralyzed his ability to recieve signal from his ocular implants. Dispite his blindness,Sam was somewhat able to assist in the mission from the Bridge. With the permission and assistance of Cheif Engineer Trichon Light, Sam retro-fitted the U.S.S. Arcadia's ARGO shuttle with a manual transmission, and got the opprotunity to test drive it in the Risan Dunes. Sam's decision to bring his young daughter Rosella on board has caused constant conflicts within him. In a timeline that was later erased, Sam lost her to natural disasters on the Planet Risa caused by the explosion of the U.S.S. Arcadia (which was later reinstated to existance). Not long after this mission, Sam's sleeping problems were brought to light during shore leave (detail below). He had not slept a full night since his wifes death and after five years it caught up to him physically. Using sleep-induction technology he was forced into a regular routine; the equipment did ensure his sleep, but the long term effects could not be postulated at the time. During this time, Sam took a reduction in duty to complete some studies for the academy, completing his coursework and assignments on-board, Sam recieved his PsC.a. Upon resuming his full duty shifts, Sam got the opprotunity to fly a shuttle mission delivering very fragile supplies to the mirona scientific outpost. He also assisted from that shuttle in monitoring schematics and the installation process of the equipment, a task which put his implants to good use. Unfortunately this mission turned out to be disasterous when a mind-controlled Captain Moose and Cmdr Dacotah lead the ship to near destruction taking the outpost into the Mirona Nebula. In defiance to their corrupt orders, Sam stripped himself of Rank and was nearly killed by the impostor Moose for this action. After both Moose and Dac had left the bridge, Sam found his way to sickbay with the help of Lt. Erias. Rosie accompanied him there and developed a friendship with Dr. Porter. After healing, and after the captain and commander were restored, Sam approached Captain Moose and was given his rank back; to Sam's surprise, he was also given the rank of Lt J.G. Sam got the opportunity to fly a shuttle in the next mission as well. This was both surprising and pleasing, especially since Sam was able to fly the shuttle "Hadrian's Wall" which was quickly becoming a favorite. Unfortunately, this shuttle was grounded via tractor beam on the planet Revin. The away team was there looking for raw materials for Arcadia, which was so badly damaged from the previous mission that it was dead in space. After dealing with some local's, Arcadia was able to get a hold of the materials it needed, conduct repairs, and return to duty with the fleet. Around this time, things were heating up on the planet Elasia...with Security Cheif N'Dak being from a political family in that region, Arcadia was dispached as a Federation Liason for the near Civil war. In the ensuing skirmishes, Arcadia had some close calls, convincing Sam that the Arcadia was not the right place to have his daughter. Rosie was sent home to live with Sam's sister, Jadyn in his Seattle apartment. Sam did not yet realize how right that decision was. After the situaton on Elasia cooled off (the solution so drastic as to involve N'Dak leaving his post to fulfil his political duties on the planet) Arcadia began research and preparations for testing of a new propulsion technique. Dubbed "Phoenix", this new project sought to acheive very high warp for very sustained periods of time via some intensive warp core modifications. Sam had an integral part in this project, helping prepare the ship for this kind of travel--these preparations took him back to his test flight days--and, of course, flying the mission. Unfortunately, something went wrong with the technology, flinging Arcadia many lightyears, and thousands of years away from it's intended location. This is about the time Sam was imensly relieved he had sent Rosie back. In the following confrontation with the galactic power in that region/time, called the "Empire", Sam was hurt badly enough to put him in a coma. When Arcadia returned to normal space/time, Sam was sent back to earth to Starfleet Medical for treatment. Upon waking from his coma three and a half months later, Sam began preperations to recertifiy himself at the Academy as well as finish all of his Psychology schooling. Within a couple months, he was ranked an Ensign and returned to duty as an Engineer aboard Arcadia. Sam was thrown into action before even arriving back on Arcadia. His shuttle encountered the shuttle of the Federation Ambassador to the planet Paradisia, where Arcadia had just established diplomatic relations. Upon beaming aboard with a newly posted ensign from the personnel carrier, Sam found the occupants of the shuttle in a catatonic state. Sadly, these were decoy androids, rigged to explode. The first explosion killing the ensign who had accompanied Sam to invesigate. Sam's Medical condition had ruled him grounded from flying because of the effects of a high stress situation. Because of the neurological effects of his injuries, Sam was prone to dizziness, impaired visual acuity and if severe enough, blackouts, when presented with a stressful, or high tension, or slightly traumatic situation. Despite this ban from Starfleet Medical, Sam was put into the helm seat not long after his return. He was asked in a dire situation to pilot the ship manually through treacherous space. Sam complied, not being necessarily happy with his flight grounding. Unfortunately, He underestimated his condition and was heavily taxed by the intense flying. This was much to the dismay of Dr. Miranda porter, Sam's treating doctor and longtime friend. Sam was surprised at how much he had missed his shipmates, and this was particularly true for Miranda. Though she was outraged that he had put himself in danger that way, her anger gave way to concern for him. Sam returned to engineering to find that he had been slid into the newly opened spot of Chief Engineer, but it was tagged with "acting" for the time being, as well as being given his old rank of Lt(jg). Sam took this semi-promotion in stride and picked up where Fitzgerald Brighton had left off managing the engineering department. Sam had never considered himself an engineer, but his skills were tested when Arcadia was sucked through a void into an alternate reality, the trip completely knocking out power to the entire ship. Sam was forced to use a cascade system to manually restart every system one by one, including the main computer. Later in the mission, Sam took a Turbolift Door to the head, not necessarily the best thing for his condition. This ended up to be ok, as he and Miranda had some time to enjoy each other's company and talk about their close friendship in sickbay. Sam began to find himself in sickbay more often in the following missions. While Arcadia was on a diplomatic mission to Axrekrav, Sam's neurological condition continued to be irritated by the various commotion. While valuing the time in sickbay with Dr. Porter, he was becoming increasingly frustrated at being incapactitated so often. This problem was compounded during that mission when Arcadia went to harvest a root from a nearby planet to use for bargaining. The root turned out to have narcotic properties which caused even more harm to Sam's condition, while also having some addictive affects. While in withdrawal, Sam had a lapse in judgement and re-exposed the crew to the drug. These affects were later reversed as the situation on Axrekrav was resolved. Sam's frustration with his condition continued as Dr. Tynte continued to press upon Sam the importance of physical therapy for his healing. Sam agreed, but could not make it work while in the difficult and taxing position of Chief Engineer. Sam also struggled with feeling s of inadequacy about the engineering staff he was in charge of, all specialists that he felt exceeded his abilities. As things stayed busy and as Dr. Tynte took over his treatment for the physical therapy aspect, Sam and Dr. Porter saw less of each other, Sam hoped this would change. Sam's misgivings expanded to feeling like he was completely useless during Arcadia's archeological mission to Nevulez III, which became a political one. He sustained a few light injuries and generally was unable to give full attention to his post. He decided it was time for a change. Sam requested a letter of recommendation from his mother, Psychology professor at the Academy, and requested that he be transfered to Ship's Counselor, a position that would meet with his specialties more closely, and give him a less strenuous work environment, allowing for his physical therapy to be more effective. The transfer was granted after Arcadia finished it's work on Nevulez. Third Party Biographical Entries: ______________________________________________________________________ Medical Medical Report - USS Arcadia NCC-1742-E - Stardate 10508.28 On Stardate 10508.24, Ensign (former) Sema'J visited Sickbay with complaints of extreme fatigue. He explained that for the past 5 years, he has only slept 20 minutes a night before his shift. After conferring with him, it was decided that the best course of action was to attempt to put him on a regular sleep pattern with the use of a alpha-wave inducer. I oversaw the installation into Mr. Sema'J's room myself. The Ensign has been put on 26-hour medical leave, and has been instructed to follow an induced sleep-schedule untill he falls into a normal pattern. Note: There is a possibility that this is a psychological issue. That possibility will be explored in the event that a medical solution is ineffective. Lt. Aaron Westler, Ph.D., General Practitioner USS-Arcadia NCC-1742-E Psychological Background: Pre-Academy Information – Summary by Academy Guidance Counselor Samuel was born with a genetically aquired blindness. This has not been present in the last few generations of his family. He was fitted with ocular implants and the issue has not come up since. Growing up the son of a transportation engineer (who let him play while no one was looking) Sam became fascinated with vehicles of all types, researching all the way back to combustion engines. With a vast array of equipment available, he got to the point where he would drive anything with a working control system. At first, Sam did not want to follow his parents Starfleet footsteps, and got into test driving civilian vehicles. That job led him to meet Elizabeth Haller, who was designing vehicles for the same company. They married and had a daughter, Rosella. Three years after Rosella’s birth, Elizabeth was killed in an engineering accident at the plant. Sam had always made his Christian faith an important part of his life; this is what got him throgh the loss emotionally. A year later, following her advice to “follow one’s dreams”, Sam applied for the Starfleet Academy, deciding to put his passion for driving into something useful. It was a very difficult decision for him, however he fell back again on his faith and trusted this decision as the right thing to do. At the Academy, Sam majored in Helm/Navigation studies. Knowing the limited opportunities, he took a minor in Psychology, the field which his mother teaches at the Academy. He has now graduated the program. His assessment marks him “Fit for Duty”. All following information should be recorded by the counselor at his subsequent post. Note: Ocular implants should not interfere with service. Dr. E.J. Russ Guidance Dept. Starfleet Academy -End Summary Miscellaneous Accident Report: Northwestern Ground Vehicle Corporation - Seattle Investigative Services --October 2, 2374 The Northwestern Ground Vehicle Corporation (NGV) experienced an equipment failure in assembly system II-C at 14:37. From computer diagnostics it was determined what machines were damaged and a repair plan was put together. The specific equipment that had malfunctioned required very specific settings to accommodate design specifications. As procedure dictated, a designer was sent with the maintenance crew to assure these settings be correctly established during the repair process. Designer Elizabeth Mae Sema'J was selected and the team of four (three engineers, one designer) began work at 15:05. During the first stage of repair, there was a set of very important, detailed safety steps to be carried out before actual repair could commence. The engineering foreman skipped one of these steps, an electrical connection was left live, and upon coming into contact with reactive debris from the initial malfunction, created a level 7 explosion. The blast killed all four members of the repair team instantly. 22. Also...a while back i mentioned that like 40% of the photos on this topic are crashed planes and 100% of the time someone make the "troi" comment. The tilted Air France plane only confirmed my theory...weird.
