  1. Tholian Subcommander Rubik scurried through the superheated corridors of the NX-05 Challenger, two aides trailing behind him. He was pleased at the ease with which they had taken the vessel as it made its return voyage from the planet known as Cait. Its crew was unable to detect his fleet's arrival, and by the time the stasis capsules had been transported, it was too late. Rubik lead his aides into the vessel's lift and tapped the access panel, requesting the Bridge. As he waited, he reflected on his tour of the vessel. It was large, of course; inferior aliens always used the illusions of size to feign superiority. But always the subtle ways of the Tholian Assembly brought victory. The lift stopped and Rubik stepped off with his entourage. He saw one of his technicians busily working on four large, deep red crystals scattered around the Bridge. The crystal at the center, just beside the Captain's chair, was roughly two meters tall and a meter around. The other three, one at a station in front of the Captain's chair and two at stations on either side, were half as tall and twice as wide. The crystals were covered by intricate webs of wiring, monitors, access panels, and power cells. If Rubik looked closely enough, he could observe that the crystals were transparent. Inside each was a human face, expression frozen, in total stasis. Rubik turned his eyes to the technician and chirped, "I was informed that the first is almost ready?" The technician's eyes swivelled to face Rubik. "Yes. This one." He pointed to the crystal in front of the Captain's chair. "We have managed to pinpoint his Dimension 13 counterpart." Rubik moved to the front of the Bridge and took a closer look. Inside the crystal was a seated human, its arms outstretched toward the keyboard in front of it. "Identification?" "Walker, Jake. Their navigation officer. Ensign--their lowest rank." "Good." Rubik replied. "If this does not go well, his life can be safely forfeit." The technician tapped at a crystalline pad in his hand. "Our readings show that the Dimension 13 Walker is currently under duress, as if his life is in danger." "I am not surprised." One of Rubik's aides, Kinton, spoke up. "The humans of Dimension 13 are even more barbaric than these humans. His life is probably being threatened by a fellow officer." "I am receiving the transfer formulas from the central computer." The technician glanced up at the viewscreen, which displayed Rubik's ship hovering in front of Challenger. His pad chirped a confirmation. "Formulas received. We may proceed at your command." "Proceed." Rubik instructed. The technician tapped his pad rapidly and the equipment surrounding the Walker crystal began emitting a rythmic hum, slow at first, but gradually picking up pace. Indicators on the monitors blinked furiously and the wiring gave off an occasional spark. Within the crystal, a white light began to envelop Ensign Walker. As the equipment worked more rapidly, the light became brighter, until the Ensign was no longer visible. "Interphasic link established." The technician reported. "Initiating the switch." The technician sent one last set of instructions to the crystal and the light within flashed so brilliantly that the Bridge was momentarily basked in a red glow. When the light faded, both the crystal and the surrounding equipment were once again dormant. The face within was again visible, its expression unchanged. "Were we successful?" Kinton asked. "Awaiting confirmation from the central computer." The technician watched his pad expectantly until new information was relayed from Rubik's ship. His eyes shot up to meet Rubik's. "We were successful. Ensign Walker is now in Dimension 13." His eyes turned to the crystal. "And this is the Dimension 13 Walker." "Superb. How long before the others are ready?" Rubik asked. The technician answered. "It will take time. The location process is especially difficult with the continuum in such disarray." "We do not have time." Rubik said. "Your people must work quickly." The technician glanced down at his pad suddenly. "We have pinpointed another." Rubik followed his gaze to the crystal beside the captain's chair and the figure standing within. "Their second in command. Moore, Elias." "Excellent." Rubik remarked. "He is next. Prepare the transfer..."
  2. Obviously. "Ambassadors" and "delegations" imply that the Vulcans are our equals. As if! ;)
  3. I.S.S. Challenger, First Officer's Report Mission Summation: The Sacking of Cait "Our mission has met with success. The Dogman attack neutralized Cait's defenses; our bombardment of their major cities met with no resistance. Finally, Caitian technology, long an object of interest of the Empire, was ours for the taking. It was only a matter of time, of course, with the Empire's recent acquisition of the mysterious USS Defiant and the... insertion of a new, more aggressive leadership. But this window of opportunity could not be passed up. "What resistance my team encountered on the surface was put down with ease. The focus of our pillaging was the Caitian capitol, sufficiently laid to waste by Lieutenant Westler's orbital bombardment. Ensign Connor grabbed some hardware from the ruined capitol dome, but the real treasure trove was the database we were able to download from the Caitian central computer. Their core is subterranean, so it managed to survive the attack, a stroke of luck for the Empire. "Lieutenant Williams, once he is released from the Brig for failing to meet the Commodore's repair deadlines, will be able to provide a full report on the technological advances this database can offer us. If our preliminary intelligence on Cait was accurate, their technological capabilities are actually on par with the USS Defiant. If the intelligence was not accurate, Lieutenant Krasner will take Lieutenant Williams' place in the Brig. The database also contains a wealth of medical information, particularly as it pertains to sub-Human biology. This information will no doubt aid Lieutenant McCellan and the science staff in developing better bioweapons. "While the Caitians presented little danger to the salvage team, there has been insubordination and the unearthing of a possible conspiracy. Ensign Allan Adams, one of our 'softer' officers as evidenced by his failure to advance in the ranks, attacked me and Ensign Connor shortly after our arrival on the surface. Failing to kill either of us, he fled and transmitted a message to the ship, traced by Lieutenant Westler to our resident Vulcan T'Parek. I suspect that something deeper is at work here. "This annoying rebellion is popping up more and more on Starfleet's ships. Personally, I think a tougher stance needs to be taken on filtering out would-be idealists like Adams. The Commodore's desire to keep the ship's sub-Human complement limited is understandable. But even a few bad apples can spoil a bunch. Until our newly acquired technology allows us to crush the rebellion, a closer eye needs to be maintained on our younger, more easily influenced officers. "I recommend that Adams (upon his capture) and T'Parek both be placed in the agony booth, so that the validity of my suspicions may be determined and the extent of any conspiracy uncovered. The booth is truly a marvel of modern technology, and it has proven invaluable in not only extracting information from reluctant crew of all species but also punishing those who step out of line. If T'Parek is cleared of treachery she may be released, but Adams must remain in the booth until he understands the terrible severity of his actions..." Report Concluded "On a related but more personal note, Lieutenant Westler's attempts to turn me against the Commodore are becoming a nuisance. His goals are clear. He cares only about his own advancement and would expect me, upon taking command, to reward him with the first officer position. But his type are too predictable; his gaze would turn to the Captain's chair and he would backstab me at the earliest opportunity. The ambitious are never satisfied; there's always a higher level for them to reach. Of course, if I were even willing to elevate myself, it would be much the other way around... I would accept his assistance in removing the Commodore, then I would have him transferred to the outpost at Hell's Gate colony. "I'll be keeping my eye on Westler. Fine officer, remorseless trigger man, a pity if we were to lose him... but should I ever need to gain the Commodore's favor, I'm turning him in."
  4. Plans are being made ;)
  5. It was high noon over N'Goran, but most of the light in the Caitian city was provided by the fires raging through the surrounding forests. The solar eclipse was only just beginning to recede, and what little light the Caitian star could offer was blotted out by the smoke and ash hanging in the windless air. It was clear to see why the Caitians viewed the invaders as "demons." They had come with the onset of darkness and released a destructive inferno upon the peaceful felinoids. The N'Gora Dome where the Challenger crew had feasted in revelry with the Caitians had been a primary target of the mysterious marauders. It was in near ruin, its domed roof caved in and chunks of its outer wall blasted away, revealing the rubble-strewn chambers within. But despite its condition, the building was known to all the local Caitians as a safehaven in times of crisis. Droves of Caitians, many wounded, many missing friends and family, were migrating to the power center of the trusted N'Gora tribe. The arena at the Dome's center was being cleared of rubble, and the survivors were assembling on the great sand pit seeking medical aid or looking for lost loved ones. Rumors were already spreading that dozens of Caitians had been transported off the surface by the invaders. Other rumors spread as to the fate of M'nerrva, the tribal elder. Some indicated that she was merely missing, others that she had been killed, buried under rubble in the attack, and others still that she had been among the kidnapped. An N'Goran pack seeking survivors amidst the rubble brought rest to the rumors when they found their beloved leader, still breathing, at the outskirts of the ravaged Dome. Reports of this reached the gathering Caitians and greatly eased their worry and pain. But some of the emotions of this mob were turning to anger. It was not lost on many of the Caitians that this attack had occured at the same time that the humans had come to the planet... and had targetted the same city that had hosted their diplomatic party. It was difficult to assume that these circumstances were mere coincidence. Caitians who had seen companions killed or abducted during the attack, who now wandered the N'Gora Dome alone and grief-stricken, were quickest to draw the conclusion that the humans had brought the invaders. The Caitians had long ago managed to achieve total peace with one another, but tensions raised when six humans entered the arena, surveying the damage...
  6. "I'm sitting here in a barely powered shuttle pod, trying to avoid the torches and buzzsaws cutting through the hatch, while contemplating the series of events on the surface of Cait V. I don't know if we achieved success in the Caitian Trial of Wisdom since I don't even know what our task was. If our goal was one of survival, we all did a bang-up job, despite getting thoroughly banged up. If we were to retrieve the 'ball' we failed miserably. "The 'ball' was some kind of electronic device, seemingly little more than a glowing mass of wires. We didn't have the opportunity to study it without our tricorders, but we were at least able to surmise that the device was responsible for our power problems, and might have been responsible for the volcanic eruptions that occured as soon as it was removed from its bridge. Lieutenant Krasner's suggestion to destroy the device was keen thinking on his part. With streams of molten lava closing in and the pod's power fluctuating like mad, destroying it may have been the only way to escape. I only hope we haven't failed our trial, and I must say I'm dismayed that we lost the opportunity to study the curious device... "I've received a report from the Bridge that Cait came under a brief attack from unknown invaders while we were away. It seems that the Bridge officers offered no response to the attack since they were too busy getting us safely away from the volcanic tempest--already cause to believe that our little excursion was a failure. I haven't gotten many of the details yet, being stuck in this box, but I won't be surprised if the Caitians are awfully ticked at us when we return."
  7. "On bridge of stone 'tween peaks of fire, good thing ye find of old empire. Ball of thread your quest will yield, but mind ye must no-power field!" -Caitian Trial of Wisdom, Excerpt "I had a bad feeling about this mission right from the beginning. As my away team members laid out possibilities for a quick and risk-free extraction of the 'ball' from the volcano bridge, I actually did allow myself a bit of optimism. But as soon as the shuttle pod landed and all the lights and panels in the interior went dark, I realized this was going to be one rough foray. "... something knocked out the pod's power. My initial hopes of a mechanical problem that could easily be repaired were quashed when all of our portable equipment also went dark. Luckily the EVA suits stashed in the pod's equipment locker are not power-dependent, but without our tricorders we're blind, without our communicators we're out of contact with the ship, and without the pod's engines we're quite stranded. Stranded on a rock ledge jutting out from the side of an active volcano, that is. "Challenger will no doubt be aware of our situation and will start formulating a plan for our retrieval. Hopefully they'll realize the futility of bringing another shuttle pod down. All signs point to some sort of energy dampening field down here, so our rescue will have to be achieved with an extra bit of creativity. "The team can't sit idle until rescue arrives. We have to discuss our next move, whether it be staying here and finding a way to restore the shuttle pod's functionality or pinpointing the source of the dampening field and taking it out of the equation. I have quite a panel of experts assembled, with two scientists, two bridge officers, and an armory officer whose concerns will no doubt be focused on the trembling volcano that towers above us. Now to see how we all fare without the crutch of modern technology supporting us..."
  8. "There are still a lot of questions surrounding the second trial of the Caitians. I guess this is no surprise; it *is* the Trial of Wisdom, after all. All we were given to go on was an electronic pad delivered by a Caitian who couldn't or wouldn't speak any English and containing data that's written in what appears to be a Caitian script. "Luckily, some things can't be curtailed by language barriers--the pad contains a map of the star system with the fifth planet conveniently highlighted. All we've managed to translate from the text data so far are mentions of a 'ball' and a 'volcano.' The 'volcano' bit is consistent with the data we have on the fifth planet. The 'ball'... who knows. The popular theory among the crew is that it's something we have to retrieve and bring back to the Caitians. "The crew is assembling on the ship now and we're collecting our first in-depth scans of the fifth planet. I wasn't all that enamored with the athletic competition that made up the first trial, but this second one seems outright deadly. We don't know for sure if the 'ball' is on the planet (or what it is, for that matter), but if these scans reveal something that can't be transported or if the scans are inconclusive, we may have no choice but to head down to the surface. That could be a problem. There's heavy volcanic activity down there, and while the EVA suits are certainly marvels of modern technology that come in handy in a wide variety of environments, they aren't known to withstand molten lava too well. "Duty log, stop recording. "Personal log, begin recording. "Frikkin' aliens. Pointless trials, loose grasps of English, cultural gorges, cryptic instructions. One moment, these Caitians are jumping for joy at our presence, the next they're tackling us all over the place. This mission is getting frustrating to the point where I'm almost longing for a few battle cruisers to show up with insane militants telling us, in words we can plainly understand, to go straight to hell. At least then everyone knows where they stand. "I came here wanting to marvel at the culturally advanced feline-people. Now I just want to march them onto the tiny bus. After all the nonsense I've witnessed so far with our 'wonderful' alien neighbors, I'm somewhat shocked that I've lately been questioning my beliefs about life, the universe, and everything. If a higher power really is responsible for seeding the universe with life, it must be impaired. It's to the point, now, where I actually *can* envision a galaxy in which humanity sets the good examples for other races to follow. Humans--the little people that could. Who would have thunk it?
  9. I'd be on board. I've already re-enacted the "smoke'em if you got'em" scene on one of my Trek sims.
  10. Reminds me of one of my old favorites... You're driving a bus down central avenue, six people aboard. First stop, two people get off and one person gets on. Second stop, one gets off and three get on. Third stop, nobody gets off and two get on. What color is the driver's hair?
  11. MCPO Twit's first command was proving to be quite strenuous. With only a skeleton crew left on board Challenger by the diplomatic party, it was his responsibility to keep affairs on the ship running smoothly. Likely to be easy enough, he had assumed, with Challenger merely maintaining a synchronous orbit above the planet Cait. But problems began to creep up when several crewmen reported hearing strange noises coming from the ship's airducts... yowling... clawing... banging type noises. And then the tiger cat in the science lab escaped again, going on another rampage which caused widespread destruction of equipment and materials. It took four security crewmen and a medical technician with a sedative to restrain the animal, which was described in reports as being "overly hyper and aggressive." Its cage (bars bent and torn by the beast's escape) had to be reinforced in anticipation of another outburst. No one could explain the animal's behavior. Still, the airduct noises persisted. Crewmen on the investigation trail managed to trace the noises back to several officers' quarters. There, the officers' feline pets were found behaving in much the same manner as the tiger cat... running about frantically, slamming into doors and walls, clawing at anything in sight (including pillows and mattresses, many of which were already in shreds), and shrieking loudly, until taking two or three hours to sleep before repeating the whole process. When the door to Williams and T'Parek's quarters was opened, Crewman Dolt was immediately and without warning pounced upon by two ravaging felines. He required seven stitches on his face, and was still recuperating in Sickbay. "We've got to get away from this planet." Twit remarked to his helmsman, Crewman Jeb. He had been able to at least surmise that the Caitians were responsible for the behavior of the ship's feline passengers. All of the cats on board had been collected in Sickbay and put under sedation, but the problem would eventually have to be corrected at its source. "We can't just abandon the diplomatic party." Crewman Zed, the communications officer, pointed out. "And I don't think the Commodore would authorize a departure from orbit just because of some crazy cats." Twit mumbled incoherently, assured that he would not go contacting the away team with such a trivial concern. He wasn't completely inept. "Chief, this is interesting..." Twit looked over at Crewman LaPierre, who was manning the science station. "I've only just noticed." Twit got up and walked over to science. "What is it?" "Look... the two moons of Cait." LaPierre pointed to the astrometric chart on his screen. "They're about to align perfectly with the Caitian star. I ran it through a projection to confirm... and it checked out. In about 24 hours, there's going to be a... hmm, total bi-solar eclipse, I guess you'd call it." Twit raised his eyebrow at the diagram. "Well, that's interesting. This sort of thing can't happen too often, can it?" "I'd estimate that it hasn't happened in a few hundred years." LaPierre replied. "But it gets even more interesting, sir. Guess where the shadow of the eclipse is going to be cast..." Twit took a closer look at the projection, and found that he was immediately disturbed by what he saw. Not only were the two moons going to be aligned with the star, so was Challenger. "Right on the city where the away team is staying..." LaPierre looked up at Twit. "Well, they're going to get quite a show down there. I wouldn't worry... I mean, the only danger of an eclipse can be avoided by not looking directly at it..." Twit shook his head and looked at the Crewman Zed. "Notify the party. This can't be a coincidence, there's got to be some significance to it." "That would be *some* significance, alright." LaPierre said. "That city looks like it's been down there for a while. But it's right in the shadow of this eclipse... that means whoever built it may have been anticipating this very event..." Everyone on the Bridge looked up as a particularly loud, sustained, almost tortured howl echoed through the air ducts. Twit found the hairs on the back of his neck sticking up at the long silence that followed. He looked back at the comm crewman tentatively. "And get in touch with security, notify them that there's still a cat on the loose..."
  12. Foreign Affairs Docket Caitian First Contact Filed by Admiral Daniel Leonard Commodore Moose, As you have no doubt gathered from reports, attempts have recently been made by an agency that's identity remains a mystery to us to shatter existing alliances and disrupt efforts to forge new alliances in the region of the Solar system. This agency intends to cause hostility among the regional powers. It has been decided that we will answer its actions in opposing fashion--by building new alliances. This race known as the 'Caitians' has extended an invitation to us. The Tellarites can not say why, but we assume they have taken notice of our recent political activities. Ambassador Graal has described them as 'pacifist to an extreme.' The Tellarites have apparently pressed the Caitians for aid in their conflicts with the Andorians, the Caitians' continued refusals driving them to frustration. It is believed that their attitude is derived from a history not far detached from that of the Vulcans--brutal warfare followed by an age of enlightenment. The Tellarites know little of this, however, because the Caitians very rarely open discussions with them, and they have never bothered to ask at the risk of straining relations between the two peoples. Grall has indicated that the invitation to humanity came as quite a surprise from the otherwise reclusive race. This is a definite good sign. If our recent forging of alliances has impressed the Caitians (for, indeed, it has gathered much attention), your mission should meet with very little difficulty. Despite their reclusive nature, the Caitians are always warm and receptive when contacted by the Tellarites. They are said to possess a level of technology beyond our own, but put more of an emphasis on the sciences than on engineering. They have provided the Tellarites with a great deal of medical technology, in particular. They possess warp technology but, for the most part of their population, have no interest in exploration beyond their home planet. They have advised the Tellarites on a wide variety of topics, from the political to the spiritual, possessing a wisdom and sense of inner peace that the Tellarites respect. They value strength, pride, and fair judgement, and are especially scornful of treacherous or violent behavior. Cait does not have a centralized government. The inhabited areas are divided into districts which are ruled by the planet's strongest tribes. The Tellarites' contact on Cait is M'nerrva, elder of the N'Goras, one of the more notable tribes. Through the respect she has earned from her people, M'nerrva is recognized as the spokesperson of Cait, despite having no authority outside of her own tribe. The invitation for first contact came from her; she will be the one to contact you as soon as Challenger arrives at Cait. Admiral Gardner has insisted that I bring one point to your attention. The Tellarites have informed us that the asteroid belt in the Caitians' star system is one of the most resource-rich locations they have ever encountered. It is particularly rich in dilithium and metal ores, minerals which are integral to our fleet's expansion. Members of our starship development projects would appreciate it if you could acquire the rights to set up mining operations in this belt. I must ask that you put aside any misgivings you might have about a rapid expansion of our fleet, given the levels of concern that the simultaneous constructions of Challenger and Columbia caused among local powers. Many of my fellow Admirals will be disappointed if you do not acquire those rights. We are relying heavily on you and your crew, Commodore. Please do be cautious and heed carefully the points that I have brought to your attention. Despite the general feelings of the Earth public, these are uneasy times. Your mission to Cait could be a turning point in easing or further exciting general feelings of anxiety. Good luck!
  13. "Do you ever get one of those feelings, Doctor Peters?" Elias glanced over his shoulder at the Director of the Mars Aerospace Institute. "A feeling that something really bad is boiling over?" Doctor Peters glanced up from his desk to look at the young Starfleet officer standing at the window overlooking Utopia Planitia. Much like the view out that window, Moore had changed a great deal over the last few years; both had become, decidedly... Starfleet. The Planitian view was once was a vast, rust-colored, rocky field, nothing spectacular about it, but now the fleet yards supporting the orbital construction facilities dotted the landscape. It still amazed Peters that Elias was largely responsible for that change of scenery. He remembered the Elias that had come to his Institute ten years ago... a brilliant boy, but also a brooding loner and a wicked firebrand. The intellect passed the test, but the behavior just didn't fit the Starfleet mold. Now, suddenly, he was responsible for a new level of cooperation between Earth and Mars, not to mention First Officer aboard one of the Fleet's premier starships. "I get that feeling sometimes, Elias. But you may be the only person in this star system, or on any of the alien worlds, that feels that way right now." Peters let out a soft chuckle. "Captain Archer has been performing small miracles out there, forging unprecedented bonds between the local alien worlds. And the feelings of unity are spreading even to this system. Archer's work has been changing people's outlooks on the NX Project. The more recent polls are showing renewed support for the Project from folks back on Earth. They're putting their memories of the Xindi attack behind them and looking ahead to a hopeful future." Elias shook his head. Everything changing. But not Admiral Gardner. One thing their conversation aboard Columbia had made clear... Gardner hadn't changed one bit. Men like Gardner were incapable of change. Too sure of themselves... self-righteous, perhaps, would be more accurate. To change would be to admit prior faults--that was the part men like Gardner couldn't stomach. "The rumors about the NX-06... what do you know about that? Are the fleet yards here really going to be expanded?" "There's every indication of that, yes. Talk is, Starfleet could be so bold as to get four NX ships under construction at the same time. 3 and 4 back at Earth, 6 and 7 over here. I don't know the exact construction plans, but I can tell you that personnel would be no problem. The Starfleet folks have been getting a lot more involved in the Institute's business over the last few months... scouting potential officers. And they've been recruiting more and more of the populace for the labor forces." Elias turned from the window and raised an eyebrow at him. "Any opposition?" "Oh, no!" Peters replied with a smile. "Some of them accept simply because they can't get better employment here at the colony, but most are too happy to contribute to the NX Project." Elias shook his head. "I mean opposition from Starfleet. Any indication that some of the Admirals don't want Martians working on the Project? Or that they don't even want the Project continued at all?" Peters furrowed his brow in response, bewildered as to where this new, more responsible Elias was going. "Is this part of your... bad feeling? Elias, I've spoken to a few of the Admirals, they're all quite cordial. Maybe a few of them are a little... stuffy, I'll give you that... but they all seem to agree that the Project is in everyone's best interests, and that the Martian help is invaluable. Why... the Project head, Admiral Gardner, he's done everything but shine my shoes to make sure he's got access to graduates." Peters laughed but Elias was far from amused. What was Gardner's angle? "Used to be we couldn't even get an open comm channel with an Earth rep if the atmosphere regulators started acting up. Like I said... times are changing." "Right." Elias turned his gaze back to the window. Was he being too cynical? Was he only seeing the Admiral Gardner he wanted to see? If Doctor Peters' observations were accurate (as was often the case), Gardner had lied about his desire to remove the Martians from the NX Project. Was that just an attempt to get under Elias' skin? Elias considered these possiblities, considered that *he* was the one being the fool in this new era of political prosperity... and he only found his feelings of unease increased. Even in the new realms of objectivity that command was opening up to Elias, Gardner just wasn't an agreeable figure. And, still, there was that latent dread of impending crisis that he'd been feeling ever since his conversation with the Admiral...
  14. While most of Challenger's officers were visiting friends on family on Earth, Elias was touring the new NX vessel. This was, after all, his life. With the exception of a few scattered months on Earth during his command training, he'd spent all of his years since the Academy either on ship or station. Growing up on the dusty red planet Mars may have made life in space a lot more attractive to him. And, besides, he could think of nothing more exciting than having a firsthand look at another new NX ship. As he moved through the corridors, he observed many last-minute touches being put on Columbia's interior--wires being tested behind this panel, paint job being finished up on that wall, friction dampeners being tweaked on a few of the doors. Elias was pleased to notice that many of the remaining laborers had a more rugged appearance that gave away their Martian descent. He took pride in the fact that Martian workers had been fully integrated into Starfleet's construction efforts after he suggested their participation in the Challenger project. He'd even heard rumors that the NX-06 was to be built at the old Challenger drydock over Utopia Planitia... that Starfleet was actually planning to expand those facilities to increase starship production. Admiral Gardner was standing in main engineering when Elias stepped off the lift to have a look at the warp drive. The Admiral glanced aside from a conversation with one of the engineers and threw a smirk in Elias' direction. Elias never had much love for Starfleet's Admirals, but in the case of Gardner, his feelings reached a whole new level. The man was more arrogant than the others, more controlling than the others, and more bigoted than the others. Elias thought of the old NX Project leader, Admiral Forrest. He and Forrest had gotten on each others' nerves on more than one occassion, but Elias always respected the man more than any of his fellows in the Admiralty. After all, it was Forrest who founded the NX Project and saw, despite opposition from the public and from within Starfleet, the launches of Enterprise and Challenger. Gardner had been one of the more outspoken opponents of the Project, voicing his desire to bolster Earth's immediate defenses with smaller, less warp-capable ships that exhausted fewer resources. It was said that he had vital connections in the United Earth Government and, thus, had the unwavering support of many of his fellow Admirals. Forrest never backed down from the opposition, however, and he saw his vision of humans exploring deep space become a reality. News of Admiral Forrest's death saddened Elias... that Admiral Gardner proceeded to take command of the NX Project surprised him. He was suddenly skeptical of the rumors that the Project would be expanding... The Admiral waved the engineer away and turned his attention on Elias. "Mr. Moore! I hadn't expected to see you before the ceremony." "Likewise, Mr. Gardner." The Admiral's indignation at being addressed that way was apparent to anyone who knew the signs of it. Elias simply snickered and looked down at the Core. "Heard we've managed to reach Warp 5.3 now? We're making fine progress, aren't we?" "Commander Tucker is a fine engineer." Gardner replied. "And even despite the constant hassle of having to deal with your unruly Martian friends, he's finishing this ship up quite nicely for us. I heard Challenger had some problems with its protein resequencers, almost had to limp back home?" Knowing what was implied, Elias sneered inwardly. "Well, we *were* forced to put her together in only four months' time. With that kind of a deadline, even miracle-workers like me and my unruly Martian friends are bound to leave a few tattered edges to smooth out. Nothing as bad as that little structural collapse that set Columbia back six months, of course." "Many blamed that on Commander Murphy, but it was beyond his control. In fact, we discovered later that the components responsible were Martian manufactured. A mistake we won't repeat with future projects. Now I just need to convince my associates to send the Martians themselves back home." Gardner smirked at Elias. "Columbia will be in good hands, though, now that Tucker is here. A good man and a fine officer, that one. Next in line to get his own command as far as I'm concerned." Elias looked at the Admiral and wondered. Curious, indeed, that he took charge of the Project. Was he looking to sabotage it from within, convert it to a purpose he found more suitable? For all his chauvinism, Gardner was a shrewd one. Always strategizing, even in the social arena--he was one of the few that suspected how Elias felt about Trip Tucker. Elias didn't let the comment phase him though. His time spent on Challenger was giving him fresh new perspectives, and he was going to make sure Gardner was aware of it. "Well, I'm glad Trip's got your favor. A shot at the big seat would probably teach him a thing or two." The grin on Elias' face disappointed Gardner. He was hoping to appeal to Elias' competitiveness and make his proposition seem more enticing. "Well, there are opportunities for you as well, Moore. I was going to speak to you at the ceremony, as a matter of fact. You have a lot of experience with the NX Project, and I know what a big supporter of it you've always been. Though your prior work on the Project has been a bit... sloppy, I've been thinking that, with the right guidance, you could become a decent enough director of the Project. I'd like to bring you back on board and groom you to take Admiral Forrest's place permanently." Coming from anyone else, the offer would have shocked Elias, but he merely narrowed his eyes and considered the implications. Gardner would never offer him such a high-level position unless he had other agendas in mind. If he had plans to shut down the NX Project... having Elias in charge *would* offer him an ideal scape goat. Plus, it would get Elias away from Challenger. Elias knew that his appointment as Challenger's first officer didn't go over well with many of the Admirals, and he could be sure that Gardner had voiced the loudest objections at the Command meetings. "My good Admiral, are you just trying to get me off of Challenger so I can't spread any more rumors about you into deep space?" Gardner frowned deeply at him. "If I wanted to remove you from Challenger, Mr. Moore, I'd need only sign the orders." Elias wasn't so sure that was the truth; the look on the Admiral's face belied him. Besides, if he did have that much influence, he'd certainly have used it by now. His reaction confirmed that he was, indeed, trying to get Elias off of Challenger. But why now? There were a number of high-level positions he could have offered Elias before Challenger even launched. "Of course. But I will have to decline your gracious offer. Challenger is a great ship with a great crew and I'm enjoying the service too much to give it up. Besides, there's no one I'd rather work for than Commodore Moose." He observed the results of that comment closely. Gardner stared back at him for a long moment, his expression unchanging. "Moose. Indeed. Good commanding officer, despite some of his more... impractical views of interstellar politics." Elias blinked at him. "And what, precisely, would a more practical view be, Admiral?" The Admiral simply swept a nonchalant hand down the front of his uniform. "While I'd like to stand here and debate politics with you, Mr. Moore, I have pressing matters to attend to. Besides, we both know politics has never been a major interest of yours. I will see you at the launch." He threw Elias a half-hearted nodded and turned toward the lift, not satisfied with the things this conversation had revealed... No one could speak to Admiral Gardner for any more than ten minutes without getting the quite unmistakable image of a chess board in one's head. Now, more than ever, Elias was receiving that image. Everyone the Admiral dealt with was a piece. Every action a strategy. Why was Elias now getting the impression that he had misinterpreted Gardner's strategies? "Now I just need to convince my associates to send the Martians themselves back home." A typical statement from the bigot, easy to not give a second thought. But why was Elias now considering that statement... and not believing it? The Martians... pieces. He'd assumed their increased involvement in the construction efforts had been fostered by the late Admiral Forrest, and was now being "remedied" by Gardner. But now he wasn't so sure. Rumors of the Project's expansion. Elias kept up with the politics well enough to realize that large-scale changes were occuring, that notions of peace were rapidly becoming a trend among the regional alien species. Could Gardner possibly have been warming up to the NX Project now that major alliances were being forged and Earth finding a better sense of security? Or was something else driving his actions? The words 'Gardner' and 'peace' almost seemed out of place in the same sentence, as if he was a man defined by his enemies. Always the image of the chess board... and always the question of who's controlling the other side...
  15. The Orion fortress ship was already halfway through its wormhole voyage when Gravus received the news that the captives had been rescued by Challenger. His gold skin shimmered slightly, reflecting his brief agitation. He lifted his portable Mentox inhaler to his left nostril and injected another dose of the drug, restoring his semblance of calm and helping him comprehend this turn of events. "Mmm... you told me they would not risk transporting their people." He lifted his visor-masked gaze to the Orion that had delivered the report. "Their technology is too crude, you said." "They obviously panicked when you launched the graviton probe." The eight-foot tall Jago was physically imposing even for an Orion. Between his size and his keen mind for battle tactics, it was no wonder that he lead the fortress ship's Orion detachment. Now, painfully aware that many of his people had been transported into space by the human ship, he was throwing a deep scowl at the gold-skinned Gravus. "What would you have suggested, Jago, my friend?" "You should have allowed me to launch the Interceptors!" Jago growled. "We could have destroyed the puny Earth ship! Instead we ran away like cowards!" "Now, now, Jago, why would I destroy the pretty human ship?" Gravus gazed slowly around the Bridge, the Mentox drug gripping his mind in a whir of mental computations. "I would love to study it some time. And it houses so many brilliant minds... minds that it is now even more important that we preserve, seeing as how you allowed the captives to escape..." "I allowed no one to escape!" Jago shouted, now pushed to the brink of fury. "Don't you dare imply that this was my fault, you frea-" But Gravus was on his feet before the Orion could finish. In a flash, he tore away his visor, revealing his "eyes"--two portals that emitted a glow too brilliant to allow an observer to clearly discern their appearance. One look at the eyes and the mighty Jago was brought down to one knee, his muscles burning and his brain throbbing. Even the Bridge crew, merely glancing at this exchange, could feel an echo of the power of Gravus' gaze; they kept their eyes averted, not daring to approach. "Of course, dear Jago." Gravus replied, his calm, soft-spoken demeanour no match for his terrible gaze. The Orion was fighting to get back to his feet, a scream of agony held in his throat. "You are right, there is no cause for blame. This day's mishaps would not have occured if we had been able to open our wormhole directly into the Deneva system. But until we acquire the aid of the humans... such accuracy just will not be possible." Jago was rapidly losing the fight, and he had to drop one hand to the floor to prevent a total collapse. His green skin darkened with his physical exertion and beads of sweat trickled down his face. Gravus merely continued, "Don't you understand why this upsets me, Jago? The humans are so important to my wormholes. Of course... there will be other opportunities to collect them... and we did achieve our secondary objective... we demonstrated our power to them." Jago released only a grunt as his face dropped to the floor and his weakening muscles gave up the fight. Only then did Gravus return the visor to his face, concealing the overpowering glow. "But, please, my good friend... don't ever again speak to me in such tones." Gravus returned to his seat, and Jago merely lay face-down on the deck in front of him, gasping for breath and not able to find the strength to pull himself up. The other Orions on the Bridge watched, but offered no help at the risk of angering Gravus. They had seen their gold-skinned master work his terrible magic on many of their number. But they had never seen their commander reduced to such a pitiful state. Aware of the staring eyes, and still unable to move, Jago wondered if any Orion would ever follow him into battle again...
  16. "We managed to rescue all of the kidnapped officers and Denevan colonists from their Orion captives, but it wasn't as smooth a pickup as I was anticipating... "The Orion fighters were simply a support group for a much larger, more well-equipped mother ship that was able to rain a staggering amount of weapons fire on us anytime we got within range. The ship's apparent commander was a gold-skinned humanoid that, according to the archives, has never been encountered by Earth or her allies. Of course, given how little we know of the Orions, speculation can run fairly rampant about this mystery commander's identity. "When we orchestrated a plan to give the captives a chance to escape, the mother ship launched a pod which began bombarding us with graviton waves, like a counterfeit black hole. With no other recourse, and with Challenger being yanked around and ripped apart, we risked using the transporters to retrieve the captives. Medical has reported that they made it back with all of their parts in tact... but side effects of a matter-energy-transport-gone-wrong could lay dormant either for a period of time or until the subject interacts with certain energy signatures. The doctors both here and on Deneva are going to need to monitor the former captives closely for signs of particle divergence, phase regression, or other unforeseeable consequences... "We managed to retrieve our people just in the nick of time, as the 'black hole' was converted into an opening that the mother ship slipped through, vanishing from all sensors. This strange rift closed before we could consider following. Our scientists have speculated that it was a 'wormhole'--some theory about tunnels through folded space adopted during the 20th century, pretty advanced stuff. Given the destructive forces that the rift unleashed beforehand, I shudder to think what kind of havoc our gold-skinned friend could unleash if he so desired. "We made a stop at Deneva to check on the asteroid and drop off the kidnapped colonists. The scientists concluded beyond any doubt that the asteroid will swing safely around the planet and make its way out of the Denevan system and that none of its scattered fragments will cause any serious damage. An investigation into the asteroid's departure from its natural orbit will have to be left to others, possibly the colonists themselves. We now have to continue heading back to Earth for the launch of the NX-02...
  17. Orion pirates have used the crisis at the Deneva colony as an opportunity to gather slaves. They have not only transported several of the Denevans aboard their fighter ships, but they have also kidnapped Commodore Moose and others among the Challenger crew. Whether or not the crew's attempts to deflect the asteroid from its collision course were successful remains to be determined with certainty, but these kidnappings must take priority. The shuttle pods containing the evacuation teams have returned and Challenger is now in pursuit of the Orion fleet.
  18. Looks like a Starfleet style Klingon cruiser... I think I've seen it here before. Might be one of Vex Xiang's creations?
  19. Sci Fi only showed reruns of Babylon 5, about a year after the show had ended its 5 year run. The only new material they gave us was the "Legend of the Rangers" movie, which was intended as a pilot for a new series, but Sci Fi chose not to go ahead with that. Aside from the usual great dialogue from G'Kar, I thought the movie stunk. Look at the bright side, if Enterprise doesn't continue, it just means we'll have more creative freedom on Challenger. And I'm sure we'll present the history better than B&B could even imagine...
  20. On Challenger, we still get to use the old Roman calendar. That will change, of course, after the Federation is formed.
  21. "Challenger is en route to the Deneva system, where a fledgling colony not yet capable of defending itself is the target of a stray asteroid. Our ETA is only slightly less than the asteroid's, meaning this is going to be a tight operation. "The latest records of the colony give it a population of about 400. The records may, of course, be out of date. And even granting standard life support allocations in an evacuation mission like this, Challenger isn't going to hold more that 100 of them. Furthermore, the records only show a handful of cargo freighters already attached to the colony. Unless we can get really creative, evacuating every colonist isn't going to be a possibility. We're converting space now to hold as many of them as we can. "The consensus at this point seems to be destruction of the asteroid, though I've yet to receive final word from the scientists. I'm not so sure, myself; even if we can dig up the energy and resources to blast seven kinds of hell out of this thing, we'll only end up turning one big rock into thousands of small rocks, many of them large enough and on the proper heading to breach the planet's atmosphere and wreak destruction. Our on-board weapons could probably take it from there... but I doubt we'd be quick enough to account for every piece of debris. "Then there's the possibility of deflecting the asteroid. Tricky. We'd have to get better measurements of its size and velocity to determine if we have the capability to knock it safely off its collision course. I'm sure headquarters has petitioned our oh-so-friendly neighbours to swoop in and loan us their wonderful tractor beam technology (which, as of yet, Starfleet has not been able to perfect), but who's to say if they'll be willing to lend a hand or if they can even make it to the Deneva system on time. "At this point, we're on our own and left to our limited resources. If we want to save all of those colonists, we're going to have to do some serious thinking."
  22. But you've already got the best visual aid in the world... your imagination. :D
