  1. You've been spending way too much time with the writers of Enterprise "Marauders."
  2. I noticed the whole discussion about "Stigma" on the boards, but it was closed before I could put my 2c in, so here goes: The episode may not have had the best acting (can't remember a Trek that had that), nor the best writing ("Shuttlepod One?"), but it was a prime example of what Star Trek is all about. Yes, the "moral" was transparent (remember the TOS episode about the black-on-the-right-side-white-on-the-left and vice versa people? or the TNG about the genderless people?). But, from what I saw on these boards, it got us all thinking about its message, discussing it, and hopefully, rethinking our positions on the issues it presented (and those that come from the discussion). What does it mean to be tolerant or intolerant of another? Accepting or reviling? In fear of what the are, what they do, what they represent? and so on... If Enterprise had more episodes like that, and less mindless drivel ("A Night in Sickbay" comes to mind immediately), I would be much happier giving up an hour a week to watch it. Just my two cents...
  3. Yet another... DATA The statement that goes along with it: "I am incapable of any feeling" Does this say something about STSF people?
  4. eh, hem... did he just demote me? [after snip] Woo-hoo! He thinks the Vogarts did it... shhhh... let's keep it that way...
  5. =/\= Personal Log of Lt.(jg) Arphazad Lo'Ami =/\= ::Begin Recording:: Personal Log, Stardate 10302.04. "Go to the planet... solve the problem." That is how the Vogarts began their test of our... something. I've had it up to here ... :: shakes right hand flat over head for about half a second :: ... with "superior" beings testing us against their ideas of moral standards. What would they have us do? All of our actions were entirely justified. They attacked first; we responded with nonlethal force. They continued to attack, we retreated. We tried feeding them, we tried to learn from the natives. And they claim that we are somehow not ready for the company of their glorious presences? Admittedly, for a few moments, while the creatures were attacking the other away team members, all I could think of was getting advice on how to kill them. But, the same thoughts would surely cross the mind of even the most rational, unemotional Vulcan. After I was released from sickbay, fully recovered from radiation poisoning sustained from the failure of my biosuit, I checked the sensor logs. The final scan taken before we were thrust back into Federation space indicated that the planet was as devoid of humanoid life as it had been when we had first scanned it. The whole scenario was a Vogart trick. The native inhabitants, the war, the radiation, the creatures... all were part of an elaborate fabrication. While I am grateful that we escaped with our lives, I still can't help wondering about the failure of our mission to contact the Vogarts. As a scientist, the answer to the ultimate question has remained hidden: "Why?" =/\= End Recording =/\=
  6. You can log in twice in a row and get different sets of ghosts or different permutations of them. I tried it this afternoon, and that's how I generated the list above.
  7. And, just for the record, add to the list: skeggsy loony_bin ltetanhawke arsala ensign_bokrah ensign_tweety20
  8. Oh, and to start off the list: if you see ens_loami on the chat boards, you have met the ghost of Lo'Ami's past.
  9. The only other chat room bugs I've experienced lately are: (1) the annoying flashing screen problem that was addressed in another thread and, don't know if this is a symptom of the others, or something else entirely: (2) the number of chatters shown at the top of the window is not always equal to the number of chatters in the player list. Usually, the number at the top of the window is larger. Also, note that different players online at the same time see different sets of ghosts.
  10. What should have been a historic moment for the State of Israel, and a continued testiment to American science, ingenuity and technology has, in a fraction of a second, turned into tragedy. Our prayers are with the families of those lost. Our hopes are that their deaths should not have been in vain. May this tragedy help us appreciate the dangers of space flight and the bravery of those who undertake it... and may it help lead to safer journies for future crews.
  11. ... About 4 months, which probably means something along the lines of lots of cells dividing. I just found STSF at random from the startrek.com website and decided to come into an academy. How's that for getting hooked instantly?
  12. Lessee... a highly intelligent being with absolutely no self-awareness... wonder how long that will last... PS - today's dictionary definition of sentience seems to be based on whether something is "concious" in the sense that it can physically "feel" its surroundings; but I think the Star Trek definition revolved around a less physical form of conciousness, or "self-awareness."
  13. =/\= Personal Log of Lt.(jg) Arphazad Lo'Ami =/\= ::Begin Recording:: :: recording from a science lab, under a machine with a toolkit and tricorder by his side :: :: in his hand is a repair tool, its beam heading upwards into an unseen machine :: Personal Log, Stardate 10301.26; Just as suddenly as they had disappeared, the twelve missing crew, Captain Moose included, have been returned. It is likely they had been long-range transported by as-yet unknown Vogart technology directly from Arcadia to a nearby class M planet. All the crew members seem to have been affected quite negatively by the trip, with the Captain barely able to hold himself up long enough to give what we think was an order to set course for the planet. :: sets down the tool, and picks up another, begins touching sets of points on the unseen apparatus with the tool; the device sets off a few beeps after each touch:: The planet was initially detected as an unremarkable world of possible interest only to a botanist. Our latest scans indicate a small settlement with humanoid lifesigns and another twelve unknown beings whom we assume to be Vogarts. An unnatural amount of radioactive debris has also been detected on the planet, suggesting that it has either survived a nuclear war or served as a dumping ground for the wastes of old-style fission reactors. From initial scans, the Vogarts seem to have a technological advantage of many centuries over the planet's humanoid inhabitants. :: slides out from under the table, grabs the tricorder, and stands up :: :: begins scanning the now-visible apparatus, one of those big, complicated-looking machines :: Arcadia is now on a parallel course with the much larger Vogart ship, heading to the planet. There are still many unanswered questions regarding our encounter with the Vogarts. Firstly, why are there two different groups aboard the Vogart ship: the one thousand easily detectable life-forms, and the ten thousand weaker lifesigns, only detectable when their shields are down? :: takes a look at the tricorder :: :: mumbles :: frak, I've tried everything... the focal center must still be out of alignment... :: starts tapping on a nearby console across from the apparatus setup :: :: a set of red lights appear next to the console :: :: continues talking to the log... :: At first, I had assumed that the first thousand were the ship's crew complement, and the others in some kind of suspended animation. But, then, when the Vogarts sent twelve of their crew to communicate with our officers on the planet, they chose from among the ones with the weaker lifeigns... why? Or, did they wake up key figures in order to contact us? Secondly, what are the Vogarts intentions on this planet? And, finally, why have they gotten us involved? :: red lights next to the console begin to turn yellow and green :: :: stops tapping on the console, returns to the apparatus, and scans once again by tricorder :: :: momentarily looks back at the log camera :: Now, if only Commander Alces would remain uncouncious a little longer, I might be able to patch up the Vertiron spectroscopy microscope before he notices what I did to his new toy. =/\= End Recording =/\=
  14. I was wondering what happened to the rest of my quarters... :-)
  15. Looks like the ghost of my former self lives on in PeopleLink's memory. Except that I've been seeing suberance on 24hrs a day now... was there a Star Trek episode about this? :-)
  16. The real secret is that it's a he!!!!!!!
  17. Heh... if our size keeps growing exponentially, the whole earth will be filled with STSF members in a matter of days! RED ALERT!
  18. forgo play!?!? hmmm... this seems to be where GM creativity is called for... like filling up the most important department on the ship - the janitorial staff - with everyone above the rank of Lt. (yay Fred!)
  19. =/\= Personal Log of Lt.(jg) Arphazad Lo'Ami =/\= ::Begin Recording:: Personal Log, Stardate 10301.16; During this short lull in the frantic search for Captain Moose, Cmdr. Alces, and others, I submit this log to the record. :: gives the computer a stone-cold official-looking face, then returns to normal :: Maybe later... flashback a few days. I had just returned from shore leave a day early with a group of junior officers. We hitched a ride on a Starfleet transport heading for Caledon II, only a short shuttle hop to Arcadia. And, there we were, on Arcadia, bored out of our wits, and off duty for another 24 standard hours. We parted ways. I started inventories of the new equipment we had acquired. But, how long can one stare at equipment, minus a good experiment? I mused a bit about restarting work on an old standby project on the physics of order and disorder, but just was not getting into it... starting a new experiment is what one does on duty, not on the last day of shore leave. And, so, I picked myself up and headed to 10-forward. Of course, they were all there: Shelby, Daniels, Hamilton - naming the crowd was like reading the ship's manifest of my transport. We drank the watered-down replicator beer and other similar-quality "refreshments" that seem to be the only things our bartender knows how to make. We got creative attempting to entertain ourselves. And thus, in the midst of the dual crises of missing-crew members and the chance of war with Vogarts, the bridge crew would be introduced to my ability, or lack thereof, to dance on bar-tables. No further elaboration will be given. :: evil grin :: On more important matters, back in the present: Twelve crew members, including the captain, are still missing. A large Vogart ship still looms on our viewscreen. Our probe had detected exactly 10,000 weak lifesigns through the aft exhaust port of the Vogart ship, in addition to the 1,000 strong ones we had already identified on ship's sensors. A vertiron-vibrational spectrum scan that broke our newest piece of equipment was unable to locate our crew on the Vogart ship. Mysteriously, it only detected 9,988 life-forms there, bringing up the intriguing possibility that the Vogarts are also missing twelve crew members; although the scan was only about 75% accurate, the probability of such a coincidence is too low to ignore. In addition, I have been trying to trace an H-band subspace blip that was detected by the probe. I have been unable to localize it to the Vogart ship; in fact, all the data seems to indicate that it came from behind the Vogart ship. Is it space noise? Or a transmission? And how does this relate to the Captain's previous loss of molecular cohesion following the Risa incident? :: stay tuned ... :: Signing off... =/\= End Recording =/\=
  20. It's not *that* important, but it would be nice to be able to edit message board posting subjects ... Waiting, with anticipation, to see the new redesign of the main site :o
