  1. BOYCOT COMCAST!

    htpp://leo.typepad.com

I've just learned that G4 has fired the entire staff of TechTV.

Per the WARN Act (governing plant closings) all the employees of TechTV have been given 60 days notice. The San Francisco operation will be shuttered by July. 100 of the existing jobs will be posted for those willing to relocate to LA.

Outgoing COO, Joe Gillespie will say good-bye to the troops tomorrow. Incoming CEO Charles Hirschorn will say hello (and good-bye) on Monday.

No word on which shows G4 will keep or which hosts will be kept on.

  2. I might do this...since I have a cable connection. But I haven't played EF in a looong time so I suppose I should practice up.

What about an Armada game? That would be fun, too since its the game I actually play sometimes :)

hm, armada, I don't have that one :/ and I don't have the money to pick it up in the bargin bin right now (as thats where i've seen the game whenever I visit places that sell them).

  3. As you say, it's an unofficial get together, so have a great time playing - but STSF would not be sponsoring or giving "banner" to an EF1 clan. Thanks.

I've been meaning to talk to you about that (ie sponsored guilds or clubs for stsf members), look for an email from me in the next week as things settle down. Ph34r ^.^

  4. Since there are topics about unofficial get togethers and all..this has been something I've thought about for the past few weeks since I got cable and could actually play EF1 online. But anyway, if anyone out there is interested in setting up an elite force holomatch clan, under the STSF banner, if the council is comfortable with that, or if they're not just a bunch of people from the group. email me, reply to the post, whatever.

  5. In response to your post:

I think there's a misconception here that GMs sit around all day plotting while maliciously keeping everyone in the dark. This may be a practice in our STSF Academies, but it's certainly not the practice of the GM staff. I think STSF does a wonderful job of keeping simmers informed. No, not everything is going to be revealed, but when Fred says, for example, that he can guarantee that a new advanced simulation will be launched at some point, or more academies will be launched, you can take that guarantee to the bank.

Simmers are always welcome to submit ideas. Many of them have been implemented. Remember the FAQ page? That was initiated by one of the members here. No, the system we have in place is not democratic, but it's like that for a reason. It's been like this long before I started, and will be like this long after I retire.

I think what's really bothering some people is the fact that the status quo, or minor improvements isn't good enough. What's wrong with being stable for awhile? We've got this idea in our head that if we don't see any visible "progress," things are some how wrong. You have to remember that every big project takes a lot of little projects.

The fact that we have added 4-5 advanced simulations in less than two years is amazing. The fact that we have added 4-5 academies is amazing. We launched a new chat interface this year, remember. We established a "Featured Simmer/GM/Simulation" page so that we might honor individuals committment to STSF and its vision. Contrary to what you think you know, I know for a fact the FS page has been very sucessful in attacting new players to that particular sim. Those are some of the BIG things. The little things? I can't even begin to list them all.

Patience, I think is the word for the week. We are working hard for your benefit. Even I don't know every little plan for STSF, as a GM, but I can tell you, the members are so "in the dark" as you might think.

    ::tosses some cents::

I think what Nemesis and perhaps others are really looking for Gromvik, is perhaps a report compiled by our illustrious leaders that might give us all a little insight into what is actually being done, what is being proposed, whats being worked on. All this as opposed to "we're working on it."

Nobody has suggested that GM's sit around all day and plot maliciously. I am seeing a desire for a little more openness.

As far as the structure of the leadership goes...well theres a reason why companies reorganize from time to time. But once again, thats a whole 'nother can of worms.

Theres a simple solution to this request, make the information availiable in a format that can be readily accessed and provide it on a regular basis. Make it a type of quarterly report, all of us that sim here are investing our time in being part of STSF, a little information is not too much to ask, make it a rundown of all the currently active projects or the minutes of the GM' meetings.

    ::Swollows Gromviks two cents::

  6. Many people have been asking many questions as of late and they all seem to be getting the same answer a what can be viewed as condensing "We're working on it". Prehaps the GMs should keep the simmers informed of what is going on because it is unfair to seasoned Simmers and fresh cadets to be left in the dark as they are. Prehaps start a forum, "GM plans".

This should change because attitudes like this can turn away people who could turn out to be great simmers. I must be honest many of things you say we're working on and be patient with have been asked before and I myself have been here for almost a year and hardly anything has changed other then the adding of the Excalibur (Which is a great addition a ship I myself sim on) and the "featured simmer page" which may be a great addition to the forum has no real impact on simming.

Again I am only asking that you allow the simmers to know whats going on so that they have more imput so this becomes more of a community and better for all simmers. Remember the GMs do not represent the views of all members but that of the GMs. I hope you give my views some thought.

    :j

Just thought I'd get a nod of approval in before the topic gets locked or dissapears.

  7. I don't even see your reason for trying to stir up debate. Who (honestly) cares what the event is called? It's just few simmers getting together at a different location. Shoreleave 26, 27, 2, -2, it doesn't make a difference...especially not here. ^_^

as I noted above its more a pet peeve, a little niggling detail that sticks wrong, as far as debate goes..if I wanted to stir a debatel there are better ways to do it.but thats a debate for another time. As to weather it matters or not, well maybe it dosen't matter to you or any one else but again as in the past, I feel a sense of duty to point these inaccuracies out. Not to mention the fact that there are alot of new people here who have little or no idea the history behind SFOL ShoreLeave and the sundering of the Elves. Besides, as I understand it STSF wished to make a clean break, and it would be perfectly logical to discontinue the roll of numbers and name the gathering something completely different to establish a new tradition for this new forum.

  8. I may get squelched for this but I'd like to point out that prior to your previous meeting there was no Shoreleave West..there is a Shoreleave 26 hosted by the STAT club in baltimore. They don't call it shoreleave 26 East, and I doubt they're going to do so any time soon. So really Shoreleave West is Shoreleave West 2. Not 26, not 30...2.

yeah, call me a player hater, but this little inaccuracy bugs me. If I wanted to be a real jerk I'd complain about calling it "Shoreleave" but I'm not going to do that.

  9. I'm sorry...I don't see how someone can judge Star Trek: Enterprise and it's effect on cannon when the show isn't over. It would be like judging, let's say, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and saying "It's going against cannon! Vader isn't even there!!!" not putting into account there were still two more episodes to follow.

Well beside the fact that you're comparing what are commonly refered to as "apples" and "oranges" One being a movie series written and produced ENTIRELY by one man, the other being a series of television series created by one man, written by hired writers and contributed to and continued by other men and women.

When a building is demolished, a really big one, they implode it. The implosion dosen't occur all at once, its done in sections, but you can tell from the first explosion what the effect on the building is going to be.

  10. Well here is where I disagree. Nemesis "defined" parts of the Romulan Empire, not redefined it...because aside from non-canon books, that information didn't exist.

I'm the last person to talk about sticking to canon in sims, heh, but in regards to canon Romulan material, there is none. It would be more accurate to say that because of Nemesis, anything contradictory in those books is not a reflection of canon Trek.

actually to some degree it did exist, it was established in Unification that the Remans were not a seperate race from the Romulans, and that Romulus and Remus are the TWIN homeworlds of the Romulan empire, as illustrated by the bird of prey clutching a green and blue globe in each talon.

  11. 1) Everyone seems to say DS9 was the last best Trek. Well I disagree. DS9 was great until they turned it into one long soap opera. Then they carried the soap-opera mentality over to ENT. In short, I stopped watching DS9 at the end because it was lousy Trek.

    2) Marris has gotten her hand stuck in the cookie jar way too many times.

    3) ENT is failing because it has to climb mount everest to get the attention of hard-core Trek fans. We've had so much great material that its just very hard to top that. I personally don't watch ENT often because it doesn't involve things that are familiar to me in Trek. We've gone away from Klingons and Romulans. When we get back to there, I'll watch again...because it's just good entertainment.

    4) ENT is canon, whether we like it or not. Just like TAS. It will be interesting to see if sims start to exclude ENT material as canon just because they don't like the show. Sure, it has contradictions...but so does Bush. That's life. ENT is here, enjoy it or not, but its part of the Trek universe now.

I rather liked the last seasons of DS9 for the exact reason you're stating. They had a consistent story line. As opposed to the TOS and TNG style which put the crew in a new situation each week and we didn't get to see the relationships between the crew evolve much. DS9 was a much more character and story driven Trek.

I agree..marris does like her cookies.

But enterprise does involve klingons and romulans, and thats one of the things I hate about it. It also involves ferengi and borg, yay! ^.^ Next season we get to meet the Bajorans and cardassians I'll bet.

I'll probably get slaughtered for even suggesting that there is simming outside of STSF, but my own sim does ignore enterprise, it also ignores great sweeping parts of Voyager and on my plane of existance, there is no such thing as Nemesis.

Just because its here dosen't mean I have to acknowledge it as part of the trek universe.

Yes, bush has contradictions, I don't belive in him either.

  12. Hey there,

See, that's my point: You can appreciate the fact there is Star Trek. The Star Trek fan base has become a bunch of spoiled little brats. People need to go back and remember that for a solid ten years, there was no new Star Trek. It took over fifteen years before there was a new Star Trek on the TV.

You don't think Enterprise is the best Trek? That's fine, but it is Star Trek. That, alone, right there, is something to be appreciative of.

You don't know what you have until you lose it. Well, I think Trek fans need to lose it for awhile and come to grips/realize what they really have.

I don't think that as fans we should support bad trek just because its trek. Hell its hardly even star trek, the only way it can be taken as a series is to assume that its a branch universe caused when the E shot down that borg sphere over earth in first contact.

Every star trek series starts out with potential, TNG, DS9 (in my opinion obviously) have realized that potential...Voyager had a good solid chance at it and in some respects suceeded, but ultimately failed, Enterprise is crap, and just because its the only new stuff out there dosen't mean I'm going to happily appreciate it. Call it spoiled if you want, I don't care. I don't go out and buy crappy cookies just to have cookies either. I could happily live without a new trek series for a few years, or ten years or for the rest of my life if thats what it means to have quality someday.

To be perfectly brutally honest I'd rather see a new B5 series spin off, or a series spun off of the Battlestar Galactica "miniseries"

I'm ecstatic about the new season of StarGate and its spin off series StarGate Atlantis. There is GOOD sci-fi out there to watch and play with, why do we have to settle for Enterprise just because they stuck startrek in the title?

  13. The next STTNG movie should be after Data passes. I suppose since b4 has all datas memories they can be recoverred. Or Datas head or data ingrams could possibly be recovered floating in space and placed in B4, thus never loosing Data. The link was unclear to me on what Bergan meant by prequel. But Data needs to be revered just like Spock.

    Ensign - Sstartrekforever

I don't think data is coming back in any shape, way, manner or form.

  14. All of the ships in STSF have a very rich and long history not reflected by the STSF web-boards.

You could always ask someone on their crews...I'm sure they have archives. You'd be surprised how long some of these sims have been running for.

I recognize some of the names on those manticore bios ^.^ went to academy with a few, knew some afterward, played with alot of those people

Alas for the good old days, I knew them well, does this mean I'm going senile Horatio?

  15. Hey there,

I personally think no new feature film should be produced until a solid two years after the last series is out of production. Need to give people time to cope with what we have as far as Trek and appreciate what's there.

thats hard to do when theres nothing to appreciate in regard to Enterprise..or Voyager..

  16. I believe it was a complete slap in the face of fans. Denise Crosby did an excellent job of creating a film that mock people who watched the show.

If you want to talk about a film which I personally feel was a solid tribute to Star Trek and it's fans, I point to Galaxy Quest. As for Trekkies, I did see it in a theatre with a relative...and there were only two other people there. Almost walked out several times, but stayed just to listen to the interviews with the actors. Have no intention of actually seeing Trekkies 2 anytime soon.

Hey Fred, while I can respect your views I think you're just a little too worked up about it. I loved trekkies, it was an interesting and fun documentry, I hope I see myself in Trekkies 2 :j

I think it shows a bunch of people who aren't afraid to wander around on a daily basis being different, they enjoy what they're doing, they're not hurting anyone, they take the title of trek geek and wear it like a badge of honor.

As for galaxy quest..I think it was a great movie, but not a tribute. ^.^

  17. I had fun watching it. It was the only series I had never seen...I wasn't into trek until Enterprise came around and Voyager was gone. I really wish they would have started later though. I can guarauntee that not very many people saw Emissary parts 1 and 2...They were so early.

But...I really like the character clashes between Odo and Quark...It's going to be fun to watch it, since now I'll be able to catch all the episodes in order, and I can't wait till Worf makes his way to DS9.

    My dollars and sense,

    Dr. Smith

I left my accounting class early to see the entire first day of the marathon.
