  1.

We just got this in our student E-Mails, thought I'd let everyone have a head up about not downloading it.

Windows delayed the release of the XP Pro service pack 2 because it can cause compatability issues, including disabling some programs, commonly used on coroporate machines. The service pack itself is safe to download and use for users of XP home or people using XP Pro at home. In the off chance that you don't like it, there is an uninstall feature that will let you roll back to your previous configuration.

I've installed, used and explored SP2 on my XP Pro machine and have had no problems with it. Overall its a great update that includes many sorely needed security improvments.

  2. McDonalds Testimonials

Scroll down and read some of the testimonials from McDonald's employees.

I work a minimum wage job while I get through college...there's a difference when a company doesn't treat its employees with respect. No one 'needs' the experience of being treated like dirt.

oh, I don't know, my two years at mcdonalds being treated like an inferior lifeform by people who do not have the potential to be more than hourly managers for the rest of their lives gives me a great appreciation for the great job I have now with nice coworkers and managers. :D

  3. Anybody see this article in TV Guide last week?

TV Guide, June 20th - 26th, has printed that according to sources, the real reason UPN renewed Enterprise was that Paramount offered to drop the price of each episode of the series from $1.7 million to $800,000. Reporter Stephen Battaglio called it "an offer [uPN] couldn’t refuse."

With UPN aiming for a female demographic, putting America's Top Model on Wednesday night along with new drama Kevin Hill, there was no room for Enterprise in its former time slot, which put it in competition with the more successful genre series Smallville on the WB as well as with ratings powerhouse American Idol. Paramount argued that UPN could afford to air a reduced-price Enterprise on Friday nights, when the network's ratings have been dismal.

It has long been known that Paramount strongly desired a fourth season for syndication rights, which become far more lucrative for a series that has produced nearly 100 episodes. Paramount will make up some of its lost revenue on a syndication deal, and more on merchandise sold to Star Trek fans.

"While only Trekkers would care if the show was canceled, Paramount knows it pays to keep them happy because Trekkers buy a lot of merchandise," wrote Battaglio. "Star Trek video games, books, dolls and other collectibles ring up about $200 million a year in retail sales, bringing in royalties of $20 million to Paramount."

"It’s important to have fresh Trek product lines," Marty Brochstein of The Licensing Letter told TV Guide. "There are still a lot of die hard fans. And they want more."

Sounds painfully reasonable and realistic from the bottom-line point of view.  This means Trek fans have to REALLY rally and bring up the ratings or this 4th season will definitely be the last.  ::sigh::

That article pretty much shows the real reason Paramount decided to even produce Enterprise, not because they belive the franchise has any particular life left in it, but because they need to keep the freaks and geeks who buy overpriced star trek crap "happy" I know businesses including paramount and its parent Viacom are in business to MAKE MONEY but I really think this is a low blow to an entire community of fans by implying that we would either stop purchasing merchandise or purchase MORE merchandise if they throw cow dung at us and slap "Star Trek' on it.

  4. Why the heck would I fly for 1000-2500 dollars?!?!? Who's got 2500 bucks to blow on a plane flight?

I'll stick with Continental with flights around $500 thank you.

The point is not to go anywhere, except into space..technically into space anyway  suborbital. The point is to experience leaving earths atmosphere and being a civillian astronaut  And yes, suborbital would be a substantially faster method of getting anywhere on the planet that usually requires a lengthly plane or boat or even train trip. You go up, you come back down.

And even though I could say more about the commercial potential of even just routine suborbital flights I'll stop here.

  5. What I meant was that since we were calling Vegas "Shoreleave west", that Baltimore would be referred to "Shoreleave East". I had only gone twice, and had very much enjoyed just hanging out with folks and with the writers and actors. The only reason I havent returned yet is that I never had the money. I was too involved with my father. But, now that I finally can go again, it seems everyone is going to meet accross the country. I can say, I am very disappointed. But, I still hope you all have a good time. Ill just have to settle with harrassing you all online. =0]

    Knl

There is still a contingent from SFOL going to Shoreleave this year, you can find more details on their messageboards, if you would like a link you can PM me.

  6. So. I am at the grocery store this afternoon. And I am going through my list of things I need and I get to 'Ice Cream' and 'Pop' (Soda for you wierdos :P ) And I find my way to the Frozen Food Isle only to find an entire freezer section dedicated to "Atkins Friendly Ice Cream" oy...just oy....some things were MEANT to be fattening...Ice Cream is one of them. ;) Not to mention the "Bunless Burgers" at Burger King....

So my question is: Are any of the rest of you a little sick of this Atkins thing ruinning perfectly good food?

I've invented a new diet called the low everything diet. You take a major food group and..YOU STOP CONSUMING IT..yes..thats right..now you too can have the low or no protien diet..also known as veganism, the low carb diet known as insanity and the low everything diet known as anorexia...

  7. To be honest, I think it's a neat idea, Vex (in fact, I understand this is currently being discussed at another forum as well, are you responsible for that one, too?) Anyway, some folks may recall our attempt to "brand" ourselves about a year ago and it didn't really fly, at the time. Maybe we can try again.

How about this. People can submit logo ideas into a different thread (I'll announce it later, don't post them here yet). Once we have at least 15 serious entries (no coconut bras please), the GM Council would look them over and pick the top 3 or 5 that best represent us. These would be displayed on a new thread/topic for all members to vote on. The winning logo would be used on the site and possibly as advertisments elsewhere. The votes would not be in poll form, but in individual messages. This way, we only have one vote per real person (you would not get to vote more than once, no matter how many Board names you have).

Some basic rules for this contest would be:

    1. No copyrighted material (very important)

    2. All unique work (please do not submit anything to us that is also being submitted to other contests)

    3. It should say "STSF" and/or "Star Trek™ Simulation Forum"

    4. Think in terms of a graphic that can be used as a banner or a corner icon

    5. Any winning entry becomes the property of STSF

I'll probably think of more rules for the contest (oh, stop moaning!), but for now the question is...

Is there enough interest in a logo contest??

That is the question to answer here.

::gives A9 a klingon bear hug:: Now..does the winner get a created by credit?

  8. In EF1, unless I'm dealing with Borg, I prefer to switch between the Scavenger Rifle and the Dreadnought Weapon (Really an Arc Welder). Welder goes through ammo pretty fast, but it's a nice combo switching between the two, and you can pick up scavenger ammo all over. But always good to keep a good supply of all ammo around....

    Just my 2 cents....

    What's your choice of weapons?

Phaser Rifle in sniper mode, or the Tetryon Pulse disrupter.

  9. What exactly is Elite Force?

Elite Force is 3D first person shooter based loosely on Voyager. A squad of security officers called a hazard team charged with taking on various threats and what not, the single player was good, but short, and the Multiplayer can be great if you have the right people playing. And I don't mean super egos who think that the other players only get in the way ^.^

I've only played the Elite Force II Demo and its somewhat frusterating as no matter how well I do I end up dead a short ways into the level. When EF2 goes down in price a little more I might think about picking it up, also when I have money...

Anyway...Elite Force 1 still has a small but dedicated following, building maps, skins and mods, and playing online. I am trying to probe out whatever interest there might be here in putting together a holomatch clan composed of STSF Simmers. So far two interested parties besides myself <_<

  10. I don't have it, and I can never find Star Trek games in the stores :)

I'm sure there are stores out there that still have copies of EF1 and its expansion pack, in fact just before christmas I saw it being sold that way as a bundle in a GameStop, along side several other Trek games, like Armada. Otherwise Ebay, or just google it, the game can still be found online. Same goes for pretty much every other trek game too : ) Just don't steal them off the net..thats wrong. very wrong.

  11. Anything happening with this?

well..I haven't seen a great deal of interest. I can't see putting the work into it if there isn't anyone that really wants to play. All interested parties should email me at [email protected]. Then we can work out just how we want to do this whole thing. If we have people who want to play I have the resources to set up a clan webpage and after we've played together for a little bit we can start looking at taking on other clans.
