  1. TKAR:

Took me a while to find your comments:

TKAR QUOTE "ACTUALLY-There was a joke on the set -from Deforest, nimoy, shatner and the rest of the cast-star trek will come back again-like mondays starfleet,tues-the women of the enterprise;wed-mccoy,medical;thurs-the men of the enterprise:Friday-vulcans and aliens;sat-new adventures and on sunday reruns of the orginal..."

But I found them... LOL Interesting. I could see the McCoy series turning out like the ill-fated "Trapper John M.D." spin-off from the "M.A.S.H." series... Shatner doing a "Dancing with the Cast" series! LOL

Not QUITE my vision, but whatever... Too funny. Because of budget restraits TOS ended up being SO campy! There is a book out there written by the show's producers that has some really kewl insights to television production and what was REALLY going on.

Did you guys know that MISSION IMPOSSIBLE was produced by the same group and filmed on the same sound stage? When Nimoy wasn't getting enough air-time on Trek he was temporarily added to its cast as compensation! Also, the famous 'slat-eyed' alien that was in almost all opening credits was a full-sized mannequin that stood in one of the producer's office for years! LOL

  2. T'Aral:

    Thank you.

I know I'm being obscure. I was asked to. I just think this little project of mine has matured enough (technology has caught up) for it to actually be done and done well. To do so takes dedication. Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I would like to discuss many more topics in detail with you (and others) but that will have to be conducted elsewhere...

But we can keep it light here... :P

  3. Good points from both of you! Thank you... I am still learning about RPing and can tell you it's not the easiest thing I've ever done but it is definitely interesting and helping me to understand better how to build these RP tools. As well, I am learning and enjoying the comradre here which is also a very important part of RPing and real life.

  4. T'Aral:

Most insightful. Like I have said, I never watched Enterprise on a regular basis; was excited at first but fr whatever reason became disenchanted. I don't even recall what I was doing while it aired.

Yes, Lt. Uhura's job was always focused on external communications and for the most part that was 'plot' oriented. The 'boring' part of her job would not be something that would warrant precious air-time. Still, as I look at the 'button asignments' as described by Franz Joseph's original drawings there is indeed an intercom system controlled from her station (and others). It is one out of four control panels in front of her so we can assume that it was not a major part of her job. She most likely just managed or overseen its operation interjecting only when necessary.

Still, what I am talking about (implementation-wise) is how communcation in general would work within a network like this one where it could closely approximate how this system would work shipboard. And I feel that simple isolated command words could be recognized (i.e. BRIDGE, SICKBAY, Botany Lab, etc.) by the system as instructions to automatically route a communication to a specified location. In this way, a single 'chat window' could be incorporated in conjuction with the single button intercom interface to provide communication outside of the immediate 'room'. The simulated system would automatically route what you type to the appropriate 'chat window' as long as the channel was opened. It would not show up on anyone else's 'chat window' who may be in the same room as you.

Does THIS seem natural? That is my goal here. What seems natural... What is realistic and workable...

  5. progression of playing drunk is leading to some sort of bar brawl

I'm a happy drunk... Ask KBear! LOL But, yes, I understand. There is time for fun and time for seriousness. It is just a SIM but people expect you to play your part so they can play theirs; a group effort.. I think we did pretty well, considering...

Thanks for the inputs, tho! :P

  6. As for "Dragon's Den", when you have an old memory and a chance to discover where it came from - I doubt that many would pass up the chance.

I wish I remembered the episode so that I could explore my empathy, but I'm sorry to bring back old nightmares for you. Perhaps I will go find a video store and grab a couple episodes! :P Gotta admit, that site that I posted has some fun clips and I stayed they for quite some time! LOL Especially like the Lt. Ellis clip... very racy! Tee Hee

    LL&P

(gonna go finish watching 'across the universe')

  7. GEEK MODE OFF - SECURING THE SWITCH IN PLACE

"Dear Prudence.... Won't you come out to play-hey hey hey---!"

Okay, quick lesson in how your cellular phone works. Believe it or not they are ALL transmitting on the same frequency (call CDMA). It is all about the timing, you are correct. In reality, no phone transmits at exactly the same time. However, if one were to attempt to try to listen without knowing the correct coded sequence then, yeah, you'd hear crazy intermodulated voices and probably not be able to distinguish one from the other (unless you were Commander Data).

I am not saying that this would be as easy task to do (active component exchange), just saying that it may be possible to use even in an emergency situation. And perhaps what we are doing (Scotty's tool kit) is actually repairing components that fail using this method rather than physically removing & replacing them. The portable tools would be used to direct the stream of energy to the damaged area, relay this information to the remote replicator system which would them return the appropriate replacement particle. This could also work in biochemistry and medical situations.

    Interesting, huh?

  8. Hi everyone!

Last nite was really fun! We (KBear, Random, TKAR, Odonnel & myself) were checking out this class M planet as a possible 'shore leave' locale and encountered some interesting lifeforms (to say the least). I enjoyed playing 'drunk' as did everyone else, I believe although KBear (as GM) knocked me out before I went completely kooky! LOL I hope that more SIM's are liken to this where we can relax and really get into the characters we are portraying. BTW, I am starting to understand what Joe (Manning) was talking about when it comes to 'making things up'.

    See you 'round campus!

  9. T'Aral:

    TECH TECH TECH

Very good. I do realize that there would be issues with the process, especially given the circumstances presented (i.e. system up, emergency). I had not thought of the compression issue but did imagine that there would be issues 'during' the exchange.

(This just in: If one was compressed and the other was not, then the transporter would again default to the 'exact' position of each particle; in this case, compressed. Therefore, there would be no issue with that part. However, the exchange would have to be almost instantaneous due the the other issue you noted; pressure.)

Perhaps what could be done is a replacement of ONLY the damaged molecules, everything else is left in tack.

    TECH OFF

I am glad this topic has gained some interest. I really enjoy discussing stuff like this. Thanks for your inputs...

  10. Wow T'Aral! There's no question of your memory! LOL I can barely remember watching them. Star Trek, however, I have seen so many times that I can almost quote their lines. I was raised on TOS and enjoyed TNG however my following had fallen off with DS9 & VOY so much that ENT failed to even interest me.

When TNG was winding down I had actually written Paramount and described a proposed spin-off. It was based on another show from the 60's named 'Police Story' where an actual case was acted out every week. There were no main series characters, each week was a different cop in a different situation. I proposed that they do something similar in the Star Trek Universe. DS9 was a weak attempt at this idea. I envisoned it more liken to what we are doing here at STSF.

    just found this: http://ufoseries.com/index.html

Wow... brings those memories flooding back! Music is actually pretty kewl.

  11. Kairi, I do agree, the fun would be 'gone'. I'm probably not the first to stumble upon this little 'flaw' in the Trek Universe. But you are correct in that it would make at least that part of our lives unchallenging.

Joe, from my understanding of 'exactly' what the transporter does at a sub-atomic level, it would HAVE to have that precision. It needs to reassemble (copy) every particle in its exactly position. The process here would be more of an exchange though. both objects would be disassembled/reassembled at the same time. In this way exact positions would also be retained.

  12. Recently during a SIM we had a leak in one of our plasma conduits. As this was an Academy SIM, this was of course, all imaginary, however, I wonder. Why couldn't the solution have been to simply 'transport in' a replacement conduit while simultaneously transporting out the defective one. Since it would be a 'replica', the new one would be exactly like the defective one down to a zero tolerance and therefore would fit exactly into its postion without having to turn one wrench or loosen one fitting.

I understand that the ship-board replicators would be programmed with daily necessities (clothing, food, etc.), however, I would think they would also have programs and saved data files for hardware as well.

    What do you guys think?

  13. as well as verbal communication within a specific room. All traffic would be ported through the same 'chat' window but only traffic for that particular individual (e.g. A message coming in on YOUR intercom at YOUR station would not be visible in MY window even though we are both in the same virtual room and would both see the general chatter within that room.)

    Scooter, et. al:

The above quote identifies how your status reports are relayed coming in from different parts of the ship. These people ARE literally 'not in the same room' (i.e. chat room). They should be elsewhere on the network and a 'sub-net' of sorts would be used to send & receive messages from them. Make sense? :P

  14. I like this. I just goes to show that STAR TREK is harmless nd rated 'G'! LOL Well, mostly... Religion was a seldom approached topic (sans DS9) in the STAR TREK universe; sort of the sacred cow. I truly liked THAT. I am not extremely religious myself, however, I do like to think I respect others and their beliefs as I would expect them to respect mine.

Regardless, I believe whole-heartedly that if THIS universe is pursued then it will become! It already has in many everyday things that some people don't even realize.

    Keep Trekking Gang!

  15. Very interesting replies. Both seem to assume that it must all be automated somehow. Yes. It was a TV show. I completely understand that. And as for SIM, well, as long as the rules remain subjective then indeed one must 'feel around' for an answer.

Currently I have a concept that I am building on where the system 'does' recognize certain verbal commands (LOCATE), crew members' names (Capt. Kirk) and associated Rank/Assignments (Chief Engineer). It was the 1960's though and THAT's what they had back then for intership communications. So, it must have been thought to work similar to an intercom system of the era I would think, eh?

My aim, of course, is to implement a system that works for the intercom, ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore, etc. as well as verbal communication within a specific room. All traffic would be ported through the same 'chat' window but only traffic for that particular individual (e.g. A message coming in on YOUR intercom at YOUR station would not be visible in MY window even though we are both in the same virtual room and would both see the general chatter within that room.)

I have been thinking about this for a couple of days now and it 'really' seems interesting to me how this will all work...

Thank you both for your comments....

    I welcome more...

  16. Hi gang!

I realize that I am still but a virgin here (hasn't even attended his 1st academy class), but I would like to say that everyone I have met thus far seems very open and welcoming. Thank you...

Alas, I do have purpose other than participating in SIMs here. I am seeking programmers who would be interested in a project that I am working on that will take this SIM to a whole new level where the technology is concerned. So... If you are a programmer or are just interested in finding out what it is that I am creating then please contact me here, we'll exchange contact info (etc) and then I will show you what we have in store.

I still find it amazing that a TV show of the 60's has generated such a following... And to any of you who think that STAR WARS even compares, well.... I'm sorry. STAR WARS is a FUN movie idea, like Cinderella. STAR TREK is our future; or could be if we chose. And from what I find here, it is entirely possible.

  17. Hi all:

Obviously, I am new to all of this and have never played any RPG's before but I am very interested. I have learned from "The Moose" that joning the Academy is a must to get started and so that is where I am at.

    HOW DO I JOIN?

  18. John:

This is NO Game. I am currently working on something that 'fits the bill'. The biggest issue that I am having is getting other programmers interested in helping put this thing together. The end result will be a multi-ship multi-participant network of Federation Vessels similar to what you guys have here only these will actually WORK! They can be flown in the virtual universe (as described by CELESTIA.com) and can be used to complete missions of scientific exploration as well as other Star Fleet missions.

If you are interested and/or know anyone else who may be then please forward this and the attachment to them and contact me. I am in Tucson, AZ and would much prefer programmers in this area due to the size of this project.
