  1. Actually, the speedy solution to a complex problem that should take months / years to work out is a Star Trek cliche'. The first time I really noticed it was in TOS: "Plato's Stepchildren." McCoy works out a hypo-mickey which emulates months of metabolizing native foods within five minutes using nothing but his tricorder and whatever yummy chemicals were in his hip-bag hypo kit. Scotty was good for a quick technical solution that should've required weeks of refitting, just by pushing a candy-colored button or fiddling with a bulbous laser pointer. Of course, the winning "quick repair of extensive damage" goes to Kirk in TOS: "Court Martial" in which extensive sabotage is fixed by yanking out a cluster of high-voltage cables. Rip ... yank ... bridge crew shimmies to the left, Power Restored!
