  1. Bahhahahahahaha. This sounds like something I would do...
  2. I too started out in a more laconic RP environment (play-by-message-board) and simming is definitely a bit of a shift, much more spontaneous and quick-moving -- it takes a little bit to get used to but in my opinion is in the long run much more exciting and immersive. ;) You basically sign up by showing up to an Academy. :P The GMs keep track of everyone who participates so just by arriving, you're involved right away, and you can attend as many academies as you like per week, or visit advanced games and watch them. All of the STSF games *are* unfortunately set in the 9-11PM EST range (with one Saturday night game at 12AM EST)...so you may find the timing is a bit of a challenge in that regard, though we do have some very experienced players from the European side of things so...it's worked out in the past. :P
  3. Welcome to STSF, Bethune! ;) We're a chat-based Star Trek simulation roleplaying ("simming") community; you can get into our chatrooms by using the button up in the top right of the forums that says "Live Chat." In the long run, the idea is that you create a character and type out their actions and speech in an ongoing Star Trek scenario with a ship's crew who meet once a week in one of our advanced games. However, as a new player, your first stop should be one of our Academy games, which are one-hour games every evening with no continuing storyline, meant to allow you to get your feet wet and learn how things work around here. The STSF GMs (Game Masters) run things and keep an eye on the progress of all new members -- when they feel a cadet is ready to move on into the advanced games, the cadet will be "graduated" and will be able to move out of the academies if they choose. You can read transcripts of past Academy chatlogs at http://www.stsf.net/forums/index.php?showforum=25 and transcripts of our advanced games at http://www.stsf.net/forums/index.php?showforum=26, which can help you get a sense of how a game runs. I'd also recommend you check out our website's "How To Sim" page, and the "Tips From the Moose" on the forums, both of which were written to explain to new players information about how to play and how to play well. :P A schedule of when the advanced and Academy games take place can be found at http://www.stsf.net/schedule.php. The next one is tonight at 9PM. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask one of the Game Masters! We're here to help and don't bite at all. :P I hope you enjoy your time with us here and look forward to seeing you in the academies!
  4. Happy birthday! =D
  5. Glad you enjoyed yourself, Mark. :P I look forward to seeing you in other academies.
  6. Just realized that Danielle Rousseau from Lost was in Babylon 5. ::chalks up another reason why she needs to get around to watching that show::
  7. Happy birthday, Tkar!
  8. Clarification from a GM standpoint: Specifically re: #4, the policy of paying attention only to your immediate surroundings at the expense of the rest of the situation is not a good approach to playing in an academy (or any game). If your department is not at the center of the action, you could easily miss comments made which will eventually be relevant to you or which push the story along. Example: A science officer in the labs might only be speaking directly to others in his department, but it would be important for him to know what information the bridge might obtain via TAC sensors about a local anomaly. A security officer doing rounds would want to pay attention to engineering's discovery of an intruder so when they are called to go after it later, they will be able to properly play out what they see. Of course, it's important to distinguish between what the character knows and what the player knows; often the character will have no idea what's occurring elsewhere, but it's certainly important for the player to always have at least a general sense of what's going on. Additionally, ignoring the lines of anyone not in your immediate vicinity will cause you to miss comm calls, which can stall a plot. When things get busy it's true that focusing on your own department first can simplify matters, but "read ONLY comments from people in your dept" is misleading. New players with questions about how simming works should check out the How-To page on the site and the Tips From the Moose in the Academy forum, or ask one of the STSF Game Masters.
  9. Welcome to STSF, G-Lux! I hope you have a great time here and enjoy the simming. Just to clarify... The Academy sims are a requirement before you can take part in the advanced games, and generally we recommend that you not worry about an advanced biography until you've graduated from the academies. However, there are no requirements in terms of log-posting or external activities for graduation; you are graduated when the GMs have seen enough of your play in-sim to be certain that you understand how the game works and how to play well with others. Again, welcome, and feel free to ask around if you have any other questions. :)
  10. Thanks, all! :) ::huggles everyone::
  11. Haaaaaaappy Birthday, Laura! Hope it's a great one!
  12. Welcome to STSF, Alex! :) Hope you enjoy RPing here. Feel free to ask around if you have any questions, and I look forward to seeing you in the Academies!
  13. I have a feeling it's probably going to suffer tremendously in DVD sales. No one's going to buy it for the story and everyone's going to realize that it won't carry over properly on the small screen.
  14. Welcome to STSF! I look forward to seeing you in the Academies! :) As Scooter said, we ask that everyone play their characters as human in the acads, so that everyone can focus on getting used to the games, interacting with each other, etc. When you graduate and join an advanced ship, you can start building the more nuanced character that you'll play week to week. Again, welcome, and feel free to ask if you have any questions. :P

  21. I think you mean an "exception." Sounds like an interesting bit of fanfic, Jorahl -- I'll have to check it out. (Quite a large zip file for download; I'll have to grab it later) Judging by their website, looks like they put a lot of work into it, so that's promising.
  22. I do NOT approve. ::hides::
  23. Happy birthday, Will!
