  1. Hiya.

Here's an example of the species that I created for the Arcadia (previously mentioned by Kansas.)

    Daena

This might give you a slight idea of what a GM might be looking for if you decide to make your own race. It can get pretty detailed, and you'd definately want a way to tie it into the Federation, Starfleet, the universe, etc. If I may, and this is only a suggestion, I would stick with a canon race for your first advanced sim. Then if you decide to add another sim under your belt, then maybe you could make your own race. But like I said, just a suggestion. :)

Thank you so much for the link. I was trying to find an example of a player made species for just that reason.

As for your suggestion, I do appreciate it, but I don't see any advantage that would come from choosing a pre-accepted species as opposed to constructing my own. Besides, it'll be a great exercise in creativity. ^.^

If my species idea isn't approved, though, it's most likely I'll be playing a canon species anyway. And I'm sure the GM approving me will take into account that I'm new here, and will reflect it in their decision.

  2. The Academies can be fast paced, with all the text zooming, totally. I was able to trudge through my first few acads by relying on the book method mode of thinking - I just happened to be in the middle of a novel that I was reading that was real time text with me taking part in the action.

That's an interesting technique. I'll have to try it out.

    Caaga,

Great question. STSF has more of a "community" role-playing philosophy than an "individual" one. Teams and contributions from many players are generally favored over isolated individual role playing and "quick fix" characters.

As such, most GMs prefer that characters (whether canon or not) do not detract from the team atmosphere. Characters should have limitations (example, almost all sims forbid Q) and should engage in the main plot and not be isolated in their own "role playing" worlds or subplots that detract from the mission at hand.

These, of course, are generalities and do not apply in all circumstances.

As anyone who has roleplayed at length knows, roleplaying with yourself is rather dull, and so is playing an overly-powerful character. I don't think there will be any problems in this regard.

It does take a little getting used to but don't despair. The more practice you get, the smoother it'll flow and it ends up being a heck of a good time!

    I hope so. :)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I look forward to seeing you all on the roleplaying field.

  3. Just an old roleplay junkie, deciding to jump in and see what's what.

I've got over a decade of roleplaying experience, and I'm looking to try something new. And as I've lately been getting very interested in the Star Trek universe, I've decided it's time to find one and try it out.

As for my question. What exactly is the policy on players creating new species for their characters? I've got an idea for my own in mind (rather basic details, really, nothing too articulated) but I don't want to spend too much time on it if there's going to be heavy opposition.

Any insight provided is definitely appreciated.

Oh, and I did my first academy sim the other day. Very fast paced and a little hard for me to follow, but still very enjoyable.

Hopefully in the next one I won't feel as though I'm drowning.
