  1. Okay, so I bought my first something from Starbucks last week.

I went to the one at my local Barnes & Noble (another conspiring company that is slowly taking over the world) and bought a piece of cheesecake.

It was dang good. Cheesecake Factory Chocolate Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake. It was so good, it gave me a sugar headache. Yum.

    I still hate coffee.

  2. My opinion:

Enterprise - I would really love to get all of the DVDs for this entire show and watch them in order. I missed a lot of the first ones and just gave up watching. I hate jumping into the middle of things. I did enjoy what I saw.

TOS - I've heard over and over how this was groundbreaking. It was the original, and for that you have to give it some credit. Back in the day it was an amazing show, with amazing special effects. But that wasn't my day. I'm part of new desensitized generation that demands more. I watch TOS for a laugh now and again, but most of it is just too silly for me sit through.

TNG - I loved the Next Generation when it first came out. I never missed a show and stayed up past my bedtime in order to see it. I don't have all of the episodes memorized, but I've seen most of them multiple times. Watching it now, though, is somewhat taxing. Plots that used to enthrall me just bore me now. I grew out of it. Nevertheless, I'll always have a soft spot for Jean Luc. ::sigh::

DS9 - I could not get enough of this series. I still love it. It is the one season that I collect on DVD. I have four of them so far. I'm really trying to work my way toward the bald Sisko. I loved the plots, the characters, and the atmosphere of this one. This one is my favorite of all of them.

Voyager - I watched Voyager when it first started and couldn't stomach it. I hated (and still hate) Neelix so much that I wanted to reach through the screen to throttle him. I did enjoy a lot of the elements of Voyager - i.e. 1st female captain with her own series, Native American XO, Maquis agents, Seven of Nine, Borg encounters, a brush with Q now and then - but I stopped watching when I decided that they'd never kill off Neelix.

And sorry for those fans of the Animated Series... I've never seen it.

  3. "Dr. Evil, as the legitimate frontman of your organization, I seized upon the opportunity to invest in a small Seattle-based coffee company several years ago. Today, Starbucks is a far-flung empire with 2000 outlets worldwide."  -  Number Two

I think he had the right idea. I'd take a chunk of that money, even though I've never even been inside a Starbucks.

  4. I sense an edit in the making. ::just grins::

I enjoy "O Holy Night" as sung by a large choir. My second favorite is the unknown Clint Black Christmas song "Milk and Cookies". Go look it up. You'll like it. And my fourth favorite is "Sleigh Ride". Did I skip number three? My third favorite is "Carol of the Bells".

I dislike "Away in a Manger" because it just droneeeeeeeeessssssss on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. Get the baby out of the manger, already! It's frickin' freezing!

Go here to sample the song:

    Milk & Cookies

  5. Did anyone ever see the movie The Commitments?

The movie was about a group of Irish guys that wanted to start a soul band.

Colm Meaney was in it as the main character's father, Jimmy Rabbitte, Sr.

In the movie, he was either drinking, cussing, or defending Elvis - his idol.

Here's a few of my favorite (censored) quotes from the movie:

Jimmy Rabbitte, Sr.: Is this the band then? Betcha U2 are <crapping> themselves.

Jimmy Rabbitte, Sr.: That's <freaking> blasphemy. Elvis wasn't a Cajun.

    Between son and father:

Jimmy Rabbitte: Elvis is not soul.

Jimmy Rabbitte, Sr.: [defensively] Elvis is God.

Jimmy Rabbitte: I never pictured God with a fat gut and corset singing "My Way" at Caesar's Palace.

  6. On the Verge...

    Colonel Jocelyn Nidari

    Chief of Tactical Operations

The armory was quiet save for the domestic sounds of the tactical team readying for the next mission. They worked in silence, checking and double-checking armor and weapons in militaristic fashion, each piece of equipment carefully inspected for signs of damage or disrepair. In addition to their normal gear, they were also prepping their biohazard suits, making certain that the life-saving uniforms were free of rips and tears and that their helmets locked securely into place. Because of the NFA’s limited resources, every piece of equipment was precious and carefully inventoried. Though the N.F.S. Reaent was old and not in the best of repair, Jocelyn would not tolerate such shoddiness in her security officers. She’d requisitioned the best of whatever she could, using her personal contacts to nab the first choice of anything that was stolen from Federation convoys or collected from dead Starfleet officers. The result was a mismatch of weaponry and equipment, but all of it was in serviceable condition with most of it being relatively new.

Standing at one end of the room with arms crossed at chest level, she sensed, rather than saw, the solid bulk of Major Scherer to her right. Glancing to the Major as he approached, she returned his nod as he indicated his own readiness. Though she had initially been dubious of his abilities he had quickly become an invaluable member of her staff. He had proven his worth several times over by taking initiative in the Tactical offices and completing tasks before they needed to be done. He anticipated her orders with such frequency that she had jokingly accused him of being part Betazoid. Whenever Jocelyn was called away to confer with the command staff, Aaron made certain that her orders were followed and that matters ran smoothly in her absence. As second-highest ranking officer in the Tactical office, he also had the respect of the other officers. Whereas she found it necessary to remain somewhat aloof and impersonal from her officers while on duty, Major Scherer had an open and amiable nature that endeared him to the others. She was pleased of the niche he’d found for himself and took full advantage of his command skills, delegating much to him with the full confidence that he’d not fail her.

Returning her gaze to her team, she waited as one by one, the seated crewmen worked through their mental checklists and turned their attentions to her. Her black gaze shifted to each of them in turn, looking them over for any signs of hasty preparation. What she saw pleased her. They were good officers and eager to serve, though most of them were unseasoned. Few had ever seen anything worse than a light phaser fight, much less intense one-on-one combat. Fewer still had ever had the misfortune of losing one of their comrades in the heat of battle. She pitied them, for they were about to be awakened to the horrors of war. If they were extremely lucky, all of them would return from the planned reconnaissance mission on the planet. But she knew that with every mission they undertook, the odds slowly stacked against them. Eventually, one of them would not come back to the ship alive. Jocelyn studied the faces before her, male and female alike, and wondered if this mission would be their last.

Tradition dictated a speech to bolster the confidence of her team. She could praise their efforts and boast of the victories that would surely be theirs as long as they worked as a team. She could offer up a rousing speech where she railed furiously against their enemies that would surely have them on their feet cheering. She could fill their heads with tales of glorious battle and massive conquests. But those would be empty words with empty meaning. It would suffice for a short period of time, but it would not last beyond their first engagement. And if their mission on the planet proved fruitless, they would return disgruntled and jaded. So what could she give them that would inspire them to the level of service that she knew was possible?

It was painfully simple, and yet so many commanding officers cringed at the mere thought.

She would give them the truth.

“Each of you has your own reason for joining the New Federation Alliance. Some of you were born to the life. Some of you have seen the atrocities of the UFP for yourselves. Some have lost the ones you loved to those atrocities. Some of you simply fight the tyrants because you feel you have a moral obligation to bring about the destruction of an immoral society. You are not alone.

Our mission today is recon. The UFP is somehow involved in this sector and we intend to find out why they are here and to thwart them if possible. They may have allies. They may have fallen into the trap of enemies. At this point, we do not know for certain. Unseen factors are at work here, and more than a few of them may be a danger to us. Your job will be to survive those dangers and return with information.

There is little that I can definitively tell you about the planet we’re about to invade. Hostile forces may be present, waiting for battle or to ambush us at the earliest possible opportunity. Though we would prefer stealth, you may find it necessary to fight to defend your lives.

As a member of the NFA, your lives are constantly in danger. Simply being on this ship is a danger in itself. This mission will be no different. Some of you may not return alive.

Dead or alive, no member of this crew gets left behind. If we do not honor the ultimate sacrifices that our fellow officers may be forced to make, we have no honor at all.”

Jocelyn paused, her gaze connecting with each of theirs in turn. “Do not fail me. Do not fail the New Federation. Come back alive.”

There was no spontaneous cheering or clapping and no energetic stomping of the feet. She held their attention for a few moments longer until the silence threatened to deafen them all. Then one by one, her crew lowered their heads to gaze at the floor and contemplate their own fates. Some of them may not make it back alive. But no one would be left behind. They would survive or they would perish.

It was a harsh reality… but teetering on the edge of death, it was all they had within their grasp to cling to.

  7. "In the past, the problem with lasers of this type has been that they often permanently blind human targets," says Tobias Feakin, an expert at Bradford University's Non-Lethal Weapons Research Project in the UK.

Man, how do you get that job?!

Scientist> "Okay, so we're gong to shoot this 'laser' at your eyes and see what happens. It may or may not blind you, burn out your retinas, make you impotent, and/or cause your skull to explode. How does that sound?"

    Test Subject> "Ummm... really bad?"

Scientist> "We'll give you five dollars."

    Test Subject> "American?"

Scientist> "No. Five dollars from the Monopoly set that my kid has at home."

    Test Subject> "Okay!"

Scientist> "Good. Just sign this waiver and we'll start."

    History

With her mother dead before Jocelyn had reached two years of age, she spent the majority of her childhood in the New Berlin Facility for Orphans. Her mother had been a common laborer who died in an industrial accident while working in the New Berlin shipyards. With no knowledge of her birth father’s identity and no other living relatives listed on record, she had been given over as a ward of the Luna colony to be cared for and educated until she could be adopted. Despite her poor beginnings, Jocelyn had a relatively happy childhood in the Facility where she learned to enjoy school and excelled in academics. Adoption came shortly after her ninth birthday when her new parents came to collect her and transport her to her home on Earth, near San Francisco. Not only did Jocelyn gain loving parents in Grath and Serena Nidari, but she also found she had a very protective older brother, Joel. Together they lived happily in their beach house on the Pacific coast.

With even more resources available to her, she continued to absorb as much information as possible, specializing in foreign languages and history. She also found she had natural talent in martial arts, grappling, and submission techniques, and grew to love her physical training as much as her traditional education. She applied to Starfleet Academy at the tender age of fourteen and was accepted a year later. She graduated in three years and was delighted (despite the ongoing altercations between the UFP, NFA, and Romulan Empire) to accept her first posting on the U.S.S. Mercedes, working in security, which came as no surprise to those that knew her well.

During her fourth year of service aboard the Mercedes, Jocelyn was approached by a mysterious Commander claiming to represent Section 31, a secret organization of which Starfleet disavowed all knowledge. Intrigued by their specialized training programs and the very nature of the organization itself, Jocelyn joined and returned to Starfleet Academy to complete some unusual courses. Her involvement with the Section was classified as were the various assignments she completed for them. Most of her missions involved some degree of spying on the New Federation Alliance and the colonies near their claimed territory. During those travels, she was exposed to the true horror of the UFP and the extreme methods that they sometimes used, many of which were conducted with full backing of Vice-Admiral Duren and the Federation Council.

In 2371, Jocelyn’s adopted parents were killed in a UFP raid. Traveling to one of the outlying Federation colonies in their personal shuttle to visit family, they were mistakenly identified as NFA agents and were attacked by a Federation cruiser. Though they survived the initial attack, their injuries were found to be extensive and they could not be saved. Serena lasted only six hours. Her husband managed to cling to life for another four. By the time they died, their identities had been confirmed and the incident was reported. The Federation Captain claimed that they had been “acting suspiciously” and “refused to be boarded”. Of course, those were justifiable reasons according to the Federation Council and the Captain was given only a reprimand on his official record. Jocelyn and her brother Joel (who had also joined Starfleet as an Engineering officer), were paid reparations and given an official apology. It did not seem to be enough. Though they were allowed a month for bereavement, Jocelyn took only one week before returning to duty, citing her desire to work through the situation rather than dwell on it. In retrospect, this would probably be considered as the beginning of the end of her Starfleet career.

In 2373, Jocelyn was reassigned to the U.S.S. Mercedes as their Chief of Security, with a primary directive from Section 31 to ferret out the NFA spy they were sure was aboard. After six months of searching, she discovered the spy to be the second officer, Commander Ian Byrne. Rather than turn him over to Federation authorities, Jocelyn covertly contacted him about aiding the NFA. Together they worked to send classified UFP information to various NFA agents, aiding their defensive efforts and helping to thwart some of the Federation’s attacks. After a year of working as a spy, all the while feeding Section 31 false information, Jocelyn received word through the NFA network that one of Ian’s contacts had been captured, tortured, and had possibly confessed Ian as a conspirator. Not wishing to take any chances, she immediately informed Ian and the two of them left the ship as soon as it docked to resupply, paying a smuggler to take them to New Federation territory and eventually making their way to Cait. With Ian’s backing, Jocelyn obtained the Chief of Tactical Operations position aboard the N.F.S. Reaent in 2376, where she had served since her defection.

    Physical and Psychological Profile

Jocelyn has proven herself to be emotionally and psychologically stable, despite the circumstances from which she’s emerged. Though she does harbor a grudge toward the Federation for the death of her adopted parents, she has worked beyond the need for petty revenge in the realization that she can do more good as a stable NFA officer than a suicidal rogue. She can be extremely personable when needed, though she prefers to listen and observe in the background rather than be the center of attention. She is ever careful with her personal associations, but she does not shun physical or emotional attachments. It should be noted that she has never allowed any of her chosen relationships to interfere with her duties.

Though her job requires plenty of brawn, she’s also surprisingly intellectual, studying a variety of different cultures, languages and customs with most of her subjects chosen on the basis of their military or tactical innovations. Physical activity and exercise plays an extremely important part of her life, sometimes bordering on obsession. However, such behavior has kept her in peak physical condition even though she is rapidly approaching middle age. Martial arts and defense training has taught her to be calm in combat situations. Even though she is extremely difficult to anger, she will not hesitate to use her skills when necessary. In combat, she is ruthless and will kill any perceived enemy without hesitation.

Perhaps her only imbalance is her separation from her adopted brother and the guilt she feels in what she considers to be her betrayal of him. Because he remains in Starfleet and has shown a profound hatred for her because of her defection to the NFA, there is no hope for reconciliation at this time. It remains to be seen what circumstances might arise if the two were directly confronted with one another in a combat situation.

  9. If you are ever in Birmingham, Alabama and happen to chance upon a Milo's Hamburgers, try it out! They have a special sort of sauce they put on their hamburgers (which always come with 1 and 1/4 patties) and they have the best fries... ever. Crinkle cut with some sort of seasoned salt. I'm craving their sweet tea, too. Everytime I go back to visit my family there, I have to go to Milo's two or three times. MILO'S ROCKS! Geez, I just made myself hungry for some.

And though it may not be some people's favorite, I love Wienerschnitzel. Cheap hotdogs, awesome Chili Cheese dogs, and the Pretzel buns that I love. Their corn dogs are good, too. I'm glad they've recently expanded the number of stores they have in Arizona.

Doesn't the 'M' after 'Human / Betazoid' mean Male?

Kestra, you need to get on someone about that!

I thought the boys were talking about some hot looking guy at Operations! ROFL

  12. So, with football (Americana) in full swing now, I thought it was time for a recap on how the teams are doing. Of course, it is probably too early to tell what the final outcome will be, but it is interesting to see how things are shaping up.

How are your predictions coming so far?

I'd have to give props the Colts and wish them luck that they continue their streak (though not when they play the Steelers in November ::evil grin:: ).

Also, Houston is not looking so good. I mean, even the Cardinals have won at least ONE game. ::winces::

  13. Blinded by my craving for all things Firefly, I LOVED the whole movie.

All of it - special effects and hovercrafts alike.

I was ready to sit through it again and I will see it at least once more while it is still in the theatre. I couldn't get enough of it.

Of course I have my own opinion about how things should have been, but making a movie is vastly different from making a TV series, so I realize that there had to be enough excitement and interest for non-Firefly fans in order to draw them into that world. I think Joss managed to maintain a difficult balance between showing much of the Firefly that we know and love as well as adding the other elements that the normal movie going person would need to find it interesting.

I can't say what other viewers (i.e. non-fans) might think of the movie, but I enjoyed it a lot. After a year of waiting for this thing to happen, I'm pleased with the results (obviously, despite the deaths). I can't wait for it to come out on DVD!

  14. ::BIG, HUGE SIGH::

    So, the deed is done.

I saw the first showing of Serenity after work today and now I am totally wiped. Emotionally, physically, everything. That movie exhausted me. I went through the entire emotional spectrum. It sucked everything I had and I left reeling in sensory overload.

    IT WAS FRICKIN' AWESOME!

And yes, I do have opinions about things I would have changed or found odd, but I'll keep those to myself to preserve the spirit of the movie.

I've waited a year for this movie. It is probably the only movie I've ever gotten this excited about (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter included). Hell, I even made my own Serenity shirt that I wore to work today and the movies after. Yes, people made fun of me (good-naturedly), but I also found some closet Firefly fans at work! :P

Now that it's over, I am more than a little sad.

Not because the movie disappointed - It was better than I ever hoped! - but because the anticipation is gone! Serenity has come and gone and I don't have anything else to look forward to! (Movie-wise, of course.) Sure, there are some pretty good movies slated to come out this year, but the Firefly movie IS the pinnacle. I'd managed to save myself from spoilers and reviews alike, because I wanted to see for myself what sort of movie this would be. I was blown away with how good it was and did not want it to end. I will most definitely be going to see it before it leaves the theatres again.

I hope that you all find your Serenity viewing experience just as good.

And I DO hope they make a sequel! A GOOD sequel! They are out there! If anyone can do it, Joss can.

  15. For those of you that haven't seen my other posts plugging the new movie SERENITY, here's a recap for you:

Firefly - My favorite show of all time. It ran on FOX back in 2002 (or thereabouts) and was cancelled without even getting to a single season! I cursed at the TV when I found out! The show is the creation of Joss Whedon, who is also the father of "Buffy" and "Angel". He's also written for other movies including Toy Story.

Firefly is a futuristic story of a starship (named Serenity) and its crew, trying to eke out a living in a harsh 'verse. They aren't exactly the 'good guys' or the 'bad guys', but they are always heroes. The world is very gritty and has a distinct western feel. Many have coined it to be a cowboy-space adventure. The ships are a far cry from the perfect lines and high technology of the Star Trek universe. To give you an idea, Joss himself said that these people are the type that the Enterprise would fly right past.

The movie is coming out this Friday! (September 30th)

I've waited a year for this movie and just wanted to share it with you all. Those that have become hooked to Firefly, know how exciting this is. For those of you that have never watched the show, check it out! They've started showing it on the Sci-Fi channel.
