  1. =/= USS MANTICORE BRIEFING #686, STARDATE 51111.14 =/=

The Manticore has been overrun by zombies! After responding to a medical emergency from the Iota-18 research station, a medical and security team brought the station personnel back to the ship after employing a transporter biofilter to eliminate a Nanite infestation that had claimed a quarter of the station's staff. Autopsies were about to be performed when some of the dead bodies began to show signs of "life" - neural and bloodflow activity, even muscular-skeletal movements. Reports of illness are coming in from throughout the ship and even A9 has been affected. Dr. Chalice has quarantined herself in a shuttle, off the ship, while engineering and science prepare to "cleanse" the crew with a mass transporter procedure.

The Manticore responded to a medical emergency from the Iota-18 research station, whose lead researcher is Manticore's former CMO, Dr. Kyle Mele. A Medical and Security team brought the station personnel back to the ship after a transporter biofilter eliminated a nanite infestation that had claimed a quarter of the station's staff. The PK device was utilized to destroy the planetoid and the entire station. Autopsies were about to be performed when some of the dead bodies began to show signs of "life" - neural and bloodflow activity, even muscular-skeletal movements. The Sickbay has been quarantined to deal with the "undead," but reports of illness are coming in from throughout the ship.

  3. With the question of nanites still unanswered, bodies ready for autopsy continued to twitch, hands and legs eventually moving in quasi-living motions. In response, the medical deck has been put in total lockdown, an attempt to contain the problem. However, Manticore crew in other areas of the ship have begun to show the signs of the same illness that spread through Iota 18, resulting in death. To better deal with the situation, senior medical personnel have been given access to Iota 18's top secret files, but with the infection spreading - and supposedly the nanites - it's a race against time to save the entire crew.

    zom·bie/ˈzämbē/

    1. Originally, a snake-deity of or deriving from West Africa and Haiti.
    2. A soulless corpse said to be revived by witchcraft, esp. in certain African and Caribbean religions.
    3. More recently, a corpse in the control of nanites, making it display the characteristics of a living person.

Nanites. Why did it have to be nanites? Of all the research in the universe there was nothing more dangerous than experimenting with nanites -- programmable, but unpredictable in their interactions with one another. And now the only possible explanation to what was happening on Manticore was that the nanites that had been used in experiments on Iota 18 were on the loose. Rogue nanites, capable of communicating and mutating, had joined to achieve a common goal: life, if only through a decaying biological body. If they wanted to pick a body, why a human body? Why not a fly, or a mouse, or a turtle, for heaven’s sake? And now she was dying to get her hands on those research files.

    Well, maybe not dying.

She blew out an exasperated sigh. Atragon had left the bridge. She was in command. The ship was at all stop. The lives of everyone on the ship were dangerously close to all stop. The dead in sick bay were moving, as though they were alive....

A half hour earlier Jami was happily manning OPS, her temporary home since Lt Cmdr Faldek’s recall. She remembered hoping that temporary was the operative word, but it didn’t look promising, at least not until this mission was complete.

And it looked now like the mission might already be complete, but not in the way they had hoped.

“Just what am I sending my personnel into?” Commander Precip’s valid concern had no definitive answer then, and it didn’t now. He would essentially be sending them in blind, and all Jami could do from OPS was to relay the facts as they had come to her from the medical deck.

“They have a problem with moving bodies, Commander,” she had said. “I figure it's post-rigor, but Dr. Chalice believes the nanites may be on the prowl.”

“Ah... that is illogical as the Captain would say. Are we talking a contagion? I just sent McFly down there and I'd rather not see him dead.”

“They’re on lock down, getting into EVA suits...” which’ll do a heck of a lot of good if it’s nanites....

At the admiral’s request, a video feed from sick bay had filled the main viewscreen, split between the now-isolated exam room and the main area of sick bay, where medical personnel were in various stages of pulling on EVA suits. In the exam room, bodies ready for autopsy were twitching limbs, shaking like B-movie ghouls. It was definitely not post-rigor.

“Precip here. Arriving at sickbay entrance; doors are sealed. Do we have a biohazard situation? If so I need to ready my teams.”

“If the doors are sealed, it’s biohazard. We have visual. It looks like the bodies are coming alive, but we really have no idea what it is.”

Behind her, the cross-conversation between Atragon on the bridge and Villane in sick bay had become edgy. “I can waste gas in there,” said the doctor, “but these are dead bodies, and if Escher's theory is correct, we are dealing with mobile nanites under the skin of each of those bodies! Admiral, we definitely need security clearance for everyone in sickbay, on whatever the secret project was. No more secrets; they are going to kill us.”

Tempers had waxed and waned over the next hour, culminating with senior medical personnel being granted full access to Iota 18’s files. The futility of the situation had become painfully evident as members of Manticore’s crew began to show the same symptoms as the victims of Iota 18.

At the request of Dr. Chalice, Jami had engineered an auxiliary sick bay around the medical shuttle in the shuttle bay.

When the admiral left to confer with the Consul General, the situation worsened, necessitating a lock down of the entire medical deck. No one in, no one out. She had, with one word, signed their death warrants... unless a solution could be found, and found soon.

And Jami was in the command chair.

The Manticore responded to a medical emergency from the Iota-18 research station, whose lead researcher is Manticore's former CMO, Dr. Kyle Mele. A Medical and Security team visited the station to assess a Nanite-infused epidemic. They have just been let out of Medical quarantine in the Sickbay, following a special nanite-focused biofilter was integrated into the transporters. The epidemic has killed 11 of the 45 researchers and their bodies will be examined to determine the failure of the research, as Manticore returns to Earth to bring these Fed Council research results home.

An Engineering team has finished excavating both the ring and the platform its sitting on, and is investigating. The ring was trenched out on both sides, with a ramp leading down from the surface towards the side with the characters...assuming that's the front.

The ruins are about 600k years old, bouncing between 850k and 1.25 mil years old.

  17. No one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate the one and love the other,
Or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
    6]
    ~Matthew 6:24

“I requested a live and open com from the bridge because of the medical situation,” said Vilanne, in response to Jami’s questioning glance. During their discussion, Vilanne had said something about overriding her orders, and Jami could not remember having done so.

“Waiting for people to tell us after the fact wasn't going to work in this situation,” Vilanne continued. “I also wanted to have them immediately beamed to sickbay, without having a medical team review them in the bay first, knowing it would save time. I did not feel it was necessary to change that, even though we had one small incident with Nurse Nancy hearing that Precip was alive, but I did not feel it warranted stopping the open com and changing my previous orders to have them immediately beamed to sickbay.

“I would like to know that the bridge crew would not override my medical decisions.”

Bridge crew? Command? She would like to know that command would not override her medical decisions?

The statement was totally unexpected, and it took Jami a moment to formulate a response, though as Second Officer she was not obligated to explain a command decision. As she listened to Vilanne, she weighed each thought carefully, trying to balance them out. Had Vilanne realized the full implications of her statement? Had she chosen her words poorly, had she meant something else? Or, in her struggle to ‘fit into’ the role of Chief Medical Officer, had she felt threatened by the presence of a superior officer working under her? All of the above? None of the above?

“Our decision to not beam was for their safety,” Jami said finally. “Beaming within the Badlands, under the best of circumstances, is not advisable. And, although I do understand your concern about overriding your decision, I will offer no explanation. I fully understand if you prefer I not operate as a physician. That is your prerogative, as Chief of Medicine.”

“That's a decision you would have to choose,” said Vilanne, “but as the CMO, I sometimes have to pull from resources, you... Jaiysa... others that have medical degrees, whether you want to work here or not.”

Whether you want to work here or not? Clearly the stress of the past week had clouded Vilanne’s judgment.

“I would enjoy having you still work here, but be cautious not to make decisions for me, or this department, whether from the bridge or down here, without going through me.”

Jami held her tongue and assumed a totally professional demeanor. She requested permission to leave and, upon receiving it, placed Vakhtang Dalsazashvili’s chart on Vilanne’s desk, bid her good day, and left the office. A turning point had come, both personal and professional.

The conversation had unearthed a concern that Jami had buried for years: conflict of interest. When Jami was both Chief Medical Officer and Second Officer, the conflict had not arisen. She had successfully balanced the two positions. The possibility that there should ever be a conflict had never been discussed.

Under Dr. Chalice, however, Jami served two masters. As Second Officer, her primary concern was the safety of the ship and crew. As a physician, her primary concern was her patient. That her command position came first presented a definite personal and professional conundrum. No wonder Vilanne was confused.

The Counselor’s office - Jami’s office - was in sick bay. Even with the door closed, her connection with the medical department remained. After a long moment of reflection, Jami made her decision.

    ==Office of Counseling Services==

    Cmdr J.E. Farrington, Counselor

To: Admiral Atragon-9, Commanding Officer, USS Manticore

To: Captain Sovak, Executive Officer, USS Manticore

From: Commander Jami Farrington, MD, PhD, Counselor, Second Officer, USS Manticore

    Re: Conflict of Interest

    Sirs:

It is apparent that a conflict of interest exists between my position as Second Officer and my position as ship’s counselor. Specifically, I cannot exercise my duties as Second Officer without presenting a command structure conflict when I also fill the position of counselor under the command of the Chief Medical Officer.

To resolve the current conflict of interest, I respectfully request that the position of ship’s counselor be removed from the medical department and be designated as a separate entity within the ship’s command structure. This move will not only resolve the issue of conflict of interest but will make the counseling position more autonomous and give patients a comfortable, confidential atmosphere outside the medical facilities.

It should be noted that this arrangement successfully exists on several Starfleet vessels, one of which is USS Enterprise, NCC 1701-D.

    J.E. Farrington, Counselor

  18. How’s Eva?

We all knew him as Tang, the classically educated engineer who craved Brahms and Mozart, who had flipped a coin to choose between a career as a classical pianist and one in Starfleet. He had chosen Starfleet. He had been trapped in time, escaped death, and now had been thrust into null space while on a routine mission to retrieve obsolete probes left behind in the Badlands.

Pale. Oxygen levels down. Frostbite. Evidence of physical trauma. Prepare for possible post traumatic...

Her patient showing signs of consciousness for the first time, Jami Farrington shifted her full attention from the biobed readouts to the engineer... the person she was tending in Manticore’s ICU. ““Hello, Tang,” she said quietly, unsure of his reaction to a human voice. “You’ve had quite an experience.”

    “How’s Eva?”

It took her a minute. My head hurts, or where am I are usually the first things a patient says after an experience like his. Yet, he was more concerned about a fellow crewman, about Eva.

“She’ll be fine,” said Jami softly, reassuringly. “How are you? How’s your head?”

“Its. . .fine. My concussion was minor.”

    “Fine?”

“I'm light headed, but I think that’s from the lack of air. How's Eva?”

Jami pressed on, remaining lighthearted. “Lack of air? You’re probably right. There’s not much oxygen in space. And Eva will be fine, but we need to concentrate on you. Any pain?”

“My neck, no. . .Just above my neck....”

“What kind of pain? Sharp? Dull? Pulsing?”

His breathing became labored as he reached his hand to the back of his neck. “Dull and throbbing.”

Moving his arm hurt. Moving his neck and head seemed to hurt even more. Not surprising, but still not a good sign. “I'll consult Dr. Chalice, but my best guess would be oxygen deprivation and a slight concussion thrown in for good measure. Not a good mixture, but it'll give you a headache every time. I can give you a mild analgesic, if you feel it would help.”

    “That sounds good. How's Eva?”

Even as he faded in and out of consciousness, he continued to ask.

“How long will my stay be?”

“That depends on how long it takes you to heal. How long do you think that will be?”

He shrugged. “I don't know, a day or so. . . .I hope. I could use the rest.”

    “Then rest, already.”

The analgesic took hold and he drifted off. Jami placed a gentle hand on his arm, knowing he craved the reassurance of personal contact. Solitude, especially the solitude of space, with its impersonal cold too close to entombment, works its worst on the physical, mental, and spiritual. It calls a physician to go beyond the technical to the personal, to revert to ancient methods of healing, especially touch, its gentle pressure, its comforting warmth.

    And he continued to call.

    “Eva?”
