The USS Avenger USS Avenger (post-Voy Miranda-class) is busy patrolling neutral space where several civilian freighters have either disappeared, or those fast enough have reported being attacked. Starfleet has decided that a show of force is required.

The Manticore has arrived at the secret Federation base on Distare-27 to pick up a new super weapon that can protect what is left of humanity from the mysterious enemy, if they decide to return. The base is run by George Melville, the former Consul General who has tried to disgrace and murder Atragon-9 as well as destroy the Manticore on many occasions. Thought to have died, more than once, Melville is onboard the ship, working with A9, Sovak and Margaux Roget to hand over the weapon.

The Manticore is enroute to Distare-27, a secret base that is even a secret to us secret-y people. The Federation C&C group on the devastated Earth has asked us to get to this base and come back home with a new super weapon that can protect what is left of humanity from the mysterious enemy, if they decided to return. We are about to reach the coordinates now.

The Manticore has reached Earth and found devastation! Over 85% of the planet's land mass has been bombarded from space by artificial meteors causing almost total eradication of life on the planet. Small pockets of humanity survive and Manticore is performing a sensor sweep of the surface to get a complete analysis. We have received a request to contact a secure Federation C&C outpost in Australia. We have no idea what to expect or who is left alive on Earth.

  8. “What I feared has come upon me. What I dreaded has happened to me.”

    ~Job 3:25

    Contact

    Numb didn’t even come close.

It had only been a year since the Battle of Wolf 359. Thirty-nine Starfleet vessels had been destroyed and 11,000 lives lost. But it could have been worse. The Borg could have made it to Earth. Earth could have been obliterated. Totally.

The same gut-wrenching, paralyzing fear gripped Jami now as had gripped her a year ago. The devastation of the fleet, the grief of losing so many colleagues, so many friends, was all too fresh. No one had gone unaffected.

And now... it had all come true. The who or what and the why seemed immaterial, except for wondering if they or it could or would return to finish the job. The Federation Council gone? And the fleet... were they gone, too? Admiral Gutarez seemed to have that impression, and Manticore was the only one in orbit at the moment.

In true form, Admiral Atragon had ordered a complete sweep of the planet, looking for any signs of life. He was a master at focusing the crew, giving them purpose, keeping them from despair. The search kept everyone busy, eager to find life - find what might be there - instead of focusing on the death and destruction - what was not there. Be thankful for what you have; don’t obsess over what you don’t have. It was a technique she had employed many times as counselor. Now, more than ever, even the counselor herself needed it as she manned the operations console.

Still, sweep after sweep after sweep had turned up nothing, underscoring the destruction, the futility of their search becoming more and more obvious as the hour passed... Had it only been an hour? It seemed an eternity. Then, at half past the second hour, a faint, broken communication came from the surface.

"Helm, lay in a course for Latitude -23.700071; Longitude 133.88065 - full impulse!" Atragon’s command broke through their shock, moving the bridge crew to action, until....

"Calling all ships in the sector, this is the Secure Command and Control commline. If any Federation ships can hear this message, please respond on the ELF frequency of 20 Hz and transmit your C&C code.”

“I need an ELF transmission set up right away.”

ELF frequency? Extremely Low Frequency, fifty to eighty Hz, not used since the 21st century? “Aye, Admiral,” Jami responded. “It’ll take a few minutes, but I’m on it.”

  9. Seems to me I remember A.C. Crispin telling us that science fiction should, most of all, be believable. Remember her totally disrupting the audience mood by laughing at the absurdity of Armageddon? She did calm down, fearing she and family would be ejected from the theater, but I remember that illustration really well. We laughed, too, hubby being a petroleum engineer and all. His reaction was more along the lines of, "What the....?"

Yeah, above all, science fiction should be believable. Voyager.... eh.

Following the encounter with the nanite infestation, the Manticore has been ordered back to Earth to report to the Consul General. We have just reached Sector 001 and are only an hour from the Federation Council in old Geneva and Starfleet Headquarters in old San Francisco.

USS Royal Oak (post-Voy Sovereign-class) has just entered orbit around Canis Minor VII, responding to reports of a plague outbreak. A Science and Security have just finished beaming down to evaluate before Medical responds.

  12.

This might be a whole other topic, but I'll throw it out: What exactly *is* a Star Trek command style? Can we define it point by point? Is it the actor or character or the writers?

There is a "command presence" that a good leader must exhibit. This is not only for military, but from CEOs down the dept heads and teachers in the classroom. When that person enters the room you know without a doubt that he/she is in charge. Some of this is the character, some is the writer, but most of it is the actor. Picard had a command presence, and Kirk did... to a certain degree.

What a command presence is *not* is acting like you're at a pajama party. My favorite quote came from my daughter, and I quote it freely.

"Mom, there's a reason why she's lost in space."

Thanks to Engineering and Science, the Manticore has been purged of the nanite infestation that had killed members of the Iota-18 research team and then turned them into "zombies." As the ship flies to Earth to report to the Consul General, Dr. Chalice and Admiral Atragon-9 are recuperating from their nanite-induced medical emergencies.

USS Serenity (post-Voy Danube-class runabout) has just entered an uncharted star system to conduct a sensor sweep. The scanners come alive, picking up several promising planetoids. No lifeforms are detected on any of the scanners, all planetoids are less than 1 billion years old and contain strategic minerals.

  15. =/\= USS MANTICORE BRIEFING #687, STARDATE 51111.21 =/\=

Thanks to Engineering and Science, the Manticore has been purged of the nanite infestation that had killed members of the Iota-18 research team and then turned them into "zombies." The nanites had started to spread to everyone on the ship, but a mass transporter procedure onboard has "cured" everyone. Now, the sickbay is just focused on the job of healing those affected who had not been killed by the plague, including Dr. Chalice and Admiral Atragon-9.

    111121.txt

  16. Thanks to a lot of quick two-stepping by science and engineering, the nanites have been removed from the crew. The dead bodies from Iota-18 are now totally dead (read: not zombies) and the live bodies are... well... fully alive and not under the influence of the nanites. Unfortunately, some of the crew - especially Dr. Chalice and Admiral Atragon - have severe after-effects. Dr. Chalice, whose Borg nanites fought for dominance against those of Iota-18, is in serious condition after undergoing surgery. Admiral Atragon's exoskeleton was a prime target for the Iota-18 nanites; they completely reconfigured his trachea, effectively removing it, so he could not breathe.

Thankfully, 24th century medicine is such that the admiral's trachea could be restored. After a long, slow process of recuperation, he resumed command of the Manticore. We departed Maturin Station and are headed to Earth.
