All ship and personnel damage received while jumping from century to century has proven to be very real. Though ship damage is considerable we are still spaceworthy. A Wrinkle in Time “Chroniton particles?” Had Jami Farrington been in her right mind the computer’s response to her off-hand question may have made sense. Or not. Chroniton particles had a nasty habit of showing up with temporal anomalies and certainly should have been present during their time shifts, but chroniton particles were not supposed to affect humans or humanoids; they were not supposed to lead to scrambled-brain syndrome. They had been known to lodge themselves in ship’s hulls and create all kinds of havoc with the systems of the ships that used cloaking and phasing devices. But to the Commander’s knowledge they had not been using their cloak. Or maybe they had and didn’t realize it, like when they fought the pirates in the 19th century, or maybe when they tried to keep the Japanese Zeros at bay. Did I mention that Jami was confused? “The crew is suffering from chroniton degeneration,” continued the computer. “The cure would be flooding the ship with antichroniton particles, which should suffice until the next temporal disruption.” Until the next one. Great. She looked at Dr. Mele, who seemed to be just as confused as she. “Oh. Wait,” he said, with a facial expression that reminded Jami of her lab partner during Academy finals. “Computer, the next temporal distortion. When will that be?” “There is insufficient data for that determination.” Great. Just great. “Computer, can we . . . um . . . release some of that stuff into the air?” said Kyle. Jami turned to him, nodding, “What it said.” “The ah . . . what it was?” “Let’s do that thing.” “Yes.” “Computer, do it!” Jami shouted, looking rather like a third grader who had just gotten the correct answer. “Yeah,” said Kyle. Did I mention they were both confused? “Please specify the action you wish to perform.” Ye gods... “What you just said! The anti-time-travel thing. Chromosomes?” Said Kyle, hopefully. But when the computer did not respond, he added in exasperation, “You remember! Check your logs!” “You wish to flood the ship with antichroniton particles to counteract the affects of time jumping?” Jami scrunched up her face, “Is that what we want to do?” “Yes, computer. That one!” Kyle was triumphant. Within seconds the ship flooded with anti-chroniton particles and the mental state of the crew reached a more balanced state – not to be confused with a totally balanced state, which is seldom reached aboard a black-ops ship. It was definitely a lesson learned, and Jami made a quick note of the problem and solution should they need it again before their time trek ended. In her more balanced state she realized that this time-jumping had better come to an end very soon. The computer’s statement until the next temporal disruption led her to believe that every time they jumped they ran the risk of mental aberrations. And that, quite frankly, was unacceptable.

=/\= USS MANTICORE BRIEFING #466 =/\= =/\= 7/31/07 =/\= The crew of the Manticore has "jumped" for the fourth time, and this time we are just 300 years into our own future, on the Manticore-T in the year 2704. A9 has been freed from an access tube and has undergone major surgery in sick bay. Escher and Garnoopy have been rescued from behind a wall panel. The onboard computer is helping the crew analyze their current situation, but the crew is not sure the computer can be trusted since it is part of the ship that is damaged. Also, some of the crew have reported being disoriented and feeling "out of sorts." Second Officer’s Log, Stardate 2704 USS Manticore 5852-T Somewhere in space. “The Door” Manticore’s time jumps were enough to make one’s head spin. Soon after Dr. Zwicky came aboard with is dark matter experiments that may or may not have had something to do with the spiders, the Manticore zipped back to 19th century Earth and had become a Man-o-War, the HMS Manticore. They were there long enough to fumble around the ship and engage in battle with pirates, then they jumped to 3142 and a ultra-futuristic sterile silver Manticore, the stuff of otherworldly dreams. Again they scouted out the ship, engaged in battle, and suddenly whoosh.... another jump took them to 20th century Earth and World War II as the Battleship USS Manticore, where they resolved to do nothing in the hopes of stopping the jumps. But now they were in the year 2704, just 300 years into the future, aboard the USS Manticore-T. It felt to Jami Farrington that the Manticore and her crew were caught on a swinging door, like the ones in restaurants between the kitchen and the dining room. It opened to one room, then swung back into the other, in and out, back and forth, never stopping, never quite opening altogether, never allowing them to remain in one room or the other, always coming just a bit closer but never quite hitting the mark. But they were getting closer to their own time, 2407, if even by a little, each time they jumped. And they had begun to notice similarities and dissimilarities with each Manticore, and some things that needed resolution had been resolved. Sort of. A few things came to mind, things she had mulled over during a breather they had on the Manticore of 3142. Dr. Zwicky must have something to do with this, since he and the spiders have been absent from the beginnings of our odyssey, though they had been sighted briefly by the crew at the moment of each leap. We can, for some reason in these jumping realities, see the Croatoans, who would be normally invisible - out of phase - to us. The most important factor, however, was that this jumping was very real. The ship has received significant damage, some of the crew have been severely injured, and some have died. Commander Garnoopy, Lt Escher, and Admiral Atragon are among the injured. They had been trapped in areas of the ship that had apparently been damaged during past or future battles. Chief Garnoopy’s injuries appeared minor, but Lt Escher has yet to regain consciousness, and Atragon. . . . It was some time before Jami Farrington realized she was still sitting next to her husband in Manticore’s OR, her uniform and hands still covered in blood from his severed artery. How long had she been there? Someone was speaking, urging her to move, to wash, to . . . . Jami looked up. It was Dr. Mele. His lips were moving but the words weren’t registering in her mind. Had she performed as she should have, she wondered through the fog. She’d been out of medical for how many months? She had reacted instinctively, but had she reacted appropriately? Her timing was off. She turned to stare at the floor as though it would give her the answer she needed, but she wasn’t sure of the question. Everything seemed distant, like something seen or heard in the time between waking and sleep. It has been said that a door is a symbol of hope, the opening to opportunity, the entrance to a new life, or the initiation to a new stage of life. Were their lives changing as a result of these jumps? Were their lives changing for the better, or was the swinging door damaging to more than the ship? Could it be that these time jumps were effecting the crew psychologically? And if so, would the damage be reversible? PHYSICIST EXPLORES WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE BIG BANG New discoveries about another universe whose collapse appears to have given birth to the one we have today are in a research paper to be published July 1 by Martin Bojowald, assistant professor of physics at Penn State. The paper introduces a new mathematical model that gives new details about the beginning of our universe, which now appears to have been a Big Bounce, according to a new theory of quantum gravity, and not a Big Bang, as described by Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. Bojowald's research also suggests that, although it is possible to learn about many properties of the earlier universe, people always will be uncertain about some of these properties because his calculations reveal a "cosmic forgetfulness" that results from the extreme quantum forces during the Big Bounce.
