Since viruses and other nasties seem to turn up on sims frequently, I'm passing this information along for medical personnel. DISCOVERY MAY HELP DEFANG VIRUSES Researchers may be able to tinker with a single amino acid of an enzyme that helps viruses multiply to render them harmless, according to molecular biologists at Penn State who say the discovery could pave the way for a fast and cheap method of making vaccines. "We have successfully tested this technique with poliovirus," said Craig Cameron, the Paul Berg professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Penn State. "And we think it is applicable to most other viruses." Cameron and his colleagues, research associates Jamie Arnold and Christian Castro, have identified a key amino acid in the polymerase of poliovirus that controls the speed and accuracy with which the virus is able to multiply. Welcome to the Federation Council. The issue before the Council today is whether to grant final approval for Antede III to become a Federation member. All players will be divided into one of two factions. Faction 1 will be arguing for their admittance. Faction 2 will be arguing against their admittance. After the game begins, Faction 1 will move over to the Ready Room, while Faction 2 will remain in the Holodeck. GromVik will be traveling with Faction 1, while Jami will watch over Faction 2. Each faction will have 20 minutes to come up with their main reasons to support or oppose the Antedeans admittance to the Federation. Each faction must also select one main presenter and one individual to offer a rebuttal. At the end of the 20 minutes preparation time, Faction 1 will reenter the Holodeck and the session will begin. Each faction will be given up to seven (7) minutes to make their main arguments. After that, each faction will be given up to four (4) minutes for rebuttal. At the end of the arguments, the Federation Council (made up by STSF Jami and STSF GromVik) will vote on whether to allow membership to the Antedeans. This plot will require teamwork, so make sure you work together. In addition, make sure you familiarize yourself about what little is available on Antede III on Memory Alpha. POSSIBLE CLOSEST NEUTRON STAR TO EARTH FOUND Using NASA's Swift satellite, McGill University and Penn State astronomers have identified an object that is likely one of the closest neutron stars to Earth -- and possibly the closest. The object, located in the constellation Ursa Minor, is nicknamed Calvera, after the villain in the movie "The Magnificent Seven." If confirmed, it would be only the eighth known "isolated neutron star" -- meaning a neutron star that does not have an associated supernova remnant, binary companion or radio pulsations. "The seven previously known isolated neutron stars are known collectively as 'The Magnificent Seven' within the community, and so the name Calvera is a bit of an inside joke on our part," said co-discoverer Derek Fox of Penn State. The onboard computer is helping the crew analyze their current situation, but the crew is not sure the computer can be trusted since it is part of the ship that is damaged.
