We should also keep in mind that the writers of the show are just that - writers not scientists. I'm sure if they could explain just how transporters and replicators work (and make them work for real) they wouldn't be working as writers. I like Star Trek as much for its consitency as for its attempt at being realistic. But it is, and will always remain, a science FICTION show. It is meant to entertain, not teach us how to advance our technology. While I, too enjoy discussions about the viability of the technology depicted in Star Trek, I am always mindful that whatever technology was introduced, there might be a reason beyond mere science (plot devices, budget reasons etc.).

=/\=MISSION BRIEF=/\= The USS Perseus is in orbit of Centaurus 6 where it was sent to to oversee the security during peace talks between two factions that have been at war for centuries. An away team of medical and security officers beamed down and was caught in explosions and firefight in the conference area. A few hostiles were stunned. They are young, inexperienced, and armed with projectile weapons (bullets, not phasers). Something, possibly a ship in orbit, is jamming communications and transporters so there is no communication with the Perseus; however... Before the comms went down the CSEC and CMO called for help and two shuttles were sent. A medical shuttle with personnel and supplies, and a security shuttle have landed in the area and are assisting the away team with search and rescue.
