  1. Congratulations to Kara Midanyl, who graduated from Starfleet Academy on Sunday, 30 November, 2008. Welcome aboard, Kara!
  2. Reminding all that the Sunday 3PM Academy will take place as usual this afternoon (as it is already Sunday in Europe). We will continue the mission from last week. If you have questions about what happened last week, please see the chat log in the "Academy Sims" folder. The Academy times are: * 3:00 PM US Eastern Standard Time * 8:00 PM Greenwich Mean Time (London) * 9:00 PM Central European Time (Germany) All players are welcome.
  3. The Sunday 3PM European Academy will fly as usual on November 30.
  4. Greetings to all our latest posters from across the pond! A reminder that our Euro-friendly academy will start today at: * 3:00 PM US Eastern Standard Time * 8:00 PM in the UK Time Zone (London) * 9:00 PM in the Central European Time Zone (Germany) Today's mission brief: The shuttle Danube has made a desperate landing on a barren planetoid approximately 9 hours away from Starbase 36. All hands are well except for Captain Chirakis, who was knocked unconscious by the impact. Before we were drawn into the gravity well, HOPS did get a message to Starfleet that contained our last position. Join us at the top of the hour in the Holodeck Chat Room.
  5. Greetings, Yet another reminder that the Academy, specially scheduled to welcome European participants, begins today at 3:00 PM US Eastern Standard Time 8:00 PM in the UK Time Zone (London) 9:00 PM in the Central European Time Zone (Germany) This academy is open to all participants. The "European" designation is merely to allow our European friends to participate at a more sane hour (as opposed to 3AM or 4AM).
  6. Captain Muon receives her new toy - an Akira class ship, the USS Ship-That-Has-not-Been-Named. The crew piles aboard to scout out their quarters and departments. Mr. Riley and Mr. Shepherd take Typhoon class fighters on pre-deployment runs, Mr. Shepherd still in quals, Mr. Riley as instructor. Cmdr Chirakis receives a reprieve from Fleeter ships and boards her aging Peregrine fighter, supposedly in preparation to bring it aboard the USS Newie. Captain Muon receives several directives: from Admiral Johansen informing her that a Romulan and a Cardassian vessel will accompany the USS Newbie to Breen space; from SFIntel, releasing Cdr Chirakis from her command for a covert mission. Captain Muon fumes. Cdr Chirakis grins. We're one happy family, we are. Chirakis 081024.txt

  8. On the Brink Not until she glanced across the conference table at LtCdr James Riley did Kirel realize that his pronounced swagger on entering the CT had nothing to do with his normally cocky attitude. Captain Muon had begun the command meeting in her Ready Room a few minutes ago. She slouched at the table, supporting herself with one arm. In Kirel's mind nothing in her rigorous survival training, in days of solitary recon, or the terrors of Director Torak at the height of an apoplectic frenzy prepared one for such meetings. Kirel had reluctantly settled in for the duration. "As you all know, the Breen were scheduled to on our front door step an hour ago. Fortunately, they vanished before arriving. Commander Chirakis sent Mr. Riley out in a fighter to see if he could find something that might help. Mr. Riley?" No response. Absorbed in some report, Muon had studied her padd for a while before she prompted him again. "So Mr. Riley, what did you find while out there?" When that produced no response, both Kirel and Muon looked up. Everything about him appeared attentive except that his eyelids were firmly closed. A visual survey showed Kirel that the stress of the last few days had taken a considerable toll. Beginning with preparations for moving the station just after she arrived, the crew had subsequently endured the stress of Ferengi blockade, and then a mad scramble to prepare for the Breen attack. Kirel was willing to wager that no one aboard Aegis had slept in over 48 standard hours. Looking now at the department chiefs made Kirel wonder about those who were not present, the crew below decks, the noncoms and scrappers, the down and dirty. The countdown clock on the opposite wall showed +51.13 hours since sighting the Breen, and still they knew very little. Of course everyone could speculate, but speculating in the face of imminent attack just didn't fly. It left too many what ifs. Dr. Lepage mentioned that the Breen had a drug to stabilize their slaves' DNA, and that maybe they had overcome the destabilization problem and maybe something went wrong with their equipment. Maybes didn't work. It something had gone wrong with their equipment and they happened to fix it, where did that put Aegis? In the middle of a materializing Breen fleet? Cardassian Liaison Ghemor said that Cardassian worries had shifted from a Breen invasion to the aftermath of their disappearance, chaos that must be going on in Breen territory and the risk of it spilling into Cardassian space. It was a valid concern not only for Cardassia but for anyone in the vicinity, including Aegis and the allied forces. Kirel eyed UFP Ambassador Joy, wondering what cogs were turning in that politically correct mass of Asimov processors, and certain that she did not want to ask. Their meeting had ended with a general consensus that more information, more concrete evidence, was needed. It appeared that Director Torak was going to get the direct recon he wanted, and for once neither his directives nor his desires had anything to do with it. It was actually Ambassador Joy's input that had effectively sealed the pact. "Politically, it may mean a power vacuum," she said. "I would worry less in the short term about chaos spreading into neighboring spaces than preventing the chaos." Kirel chuckled at the irony. It was a ticket off-station, if only for a while and in the Portas System. They'd take what they could get from the fleet, provided Admiral Johansen agreed, of course. And it didn't look like anyone would get a much-needed rest any time soon.
  9. TBS is 12 hours. The station stands down from Red to Yellow Alert. Science works on the chroniton problem, among other things. Medical personnel move their equipment - again. Engineering ponders the fate of the universe. Command meets with department heads and diplomats to pool their data and plan the next step. Muon considers - albeit briefly - awarding latinum to all who write logs and take timely showers. Or perhaps I dream 081010.txt

  11. Limbo "Talk to me." As calm as SI-5 Director Torak looked under fire, an almost imperceptible twitch in his left brow and the portside list of his head betrayed an underlying turmoil. He'd had his fill of they vanished again. It was crunch time. He was looking for real answers. Kirel was too. Problem was, the Breen had vanished again and were now an estimated 20 minutes from Sky Harbour Aegis. So far they had shown no signs of emerging, but there remained the distinct possibility that the Breen fleet could rematerialize close to the station and scattered among the Allied Fleet. Kirel stared at the image of Director Torak on her secure screen. Her eyes narrowed. Something deep within her psyche needled her, a gut feeling so strong she was willing to risk the Fleet and the Station. She doubted Torak would buy it. "Dammit, Chirakis! Spit it out!" A hand appeared on Torak's shoulder, apparently to ease the purple flush that had invaded his olive complexion. Kirel recognized it as that of his personal aide T'lek. Torak seldom referred to Kirel by her sir name; soon he would be spitting out his native Xhosa. "We believe their attack may be an act of desperation," she said, meeting his gaze. "Their stepchild may finally be out of control." Stepchild was the code word used for the Breen temporal shielding. Its full meaning eluded Kirel, but at this point minutiae didn't matter. "Tell me something I don't already know, Chirakis!" His fist met the desktop, rattling several padds and shaking the screen. "Their stepchild has been out of control since it was conceived! An act of desperation? Of course it's an act of desperation! Wouldn't you be desperate if you were the most powerful known species in the galaxy and something you created reduced your entire race to blinking idiots every so often without warning?" He'd clearly missed her point. "And who the hell is we?" "Commander Brown, Centurion Jorahl, Lt Cdr Riley, and myself." "Brown is back?" "He has the Portland." "Riley's there?" "He is." Torak seemed to settle down. He leaned back a bit and his expression turned thoughtful. T'lek's hand disappeared. "From where? Who sent him?" That was odd. Kirel quirked a brow. Torak knew the limitations of field operatives, especially their security directive. She had been informed of Riley's assignment and was aware of his status; beyond that she was privy to nothing. Apparently Kirel's expression translated well. "Forget that," said Torak, waving a hand at the screen. "Continue." "Information from various sources confirms our own findings," she continued evenly. "Aegis's medical and science departments have found chronitons imbedded in the stowaways' DNA. The bag of yellow powder I showed you seems to be a drug to counteract the effects of DNA alteration. Sensor and visual recon by Brown on Portland confirmed Breen fleet confusion, erratic movement, and disorganization. Fleet signals appeared to be fading in and out of flux. Chronitons and tachyons detected. His exact words were, 'Not sure what they are running from, but they aren't in a terrible hurry to get here.' "We also have this." Kirel shifted slightly to press a button on her console, patching him into the communications feed from the Portas System. Overlapping messages blared mass confusion on the scale of a megadisaster, jamming every short-range, long-range, and subspace frequency in the area. "It began a few minutes after the Breen disappeared from our sensors and the Fleet's visual scouts." Torak leaned forward, his expression changing from thoughtful to somewhat puzzled to… hopeful? "The Itzak effect?" Itzak Yemin was one of the most renowned, yet controversial authorities on temporal dynamics and molecular phasing technology. Despite his extensive research, other prominent Federation scientists had ridiculed his latest theory: that matter seeks equilibrium and that when something – or someone – was phased repeatedly, the phased matter, in an effort to stabilize, would remain in a state of phase. If his prediction was correct, and if the Breen had tied phasing to their own DNA, the implication for the Breen and their colonies was enormous. "Perhaps," said Kirel, though she was certain Itzak was correct. "Extensive recon would be needed for verification. Unless, of course, they do emerge, and we'll know that in," she swiveled a bit to check the countdown, "twenty minutes. Then it won't matter. We'll be gone." She smirked and relaxed into her chair. Torak grunted. "Portas V?" "Gone, according to local media. No SI confirmation." "Dozaria?" "Unknown." "Outpost 39? 27? 83?" She shrugged, rocking her chair a bit. "Possibility of recon at your end?" She stopped rocking. After a quick glance to the side she folded her hands and leaned close to the screen. Her words were measured and direct. "Absolutely, but you will have to release me from my duties here." Torak ran a hand over his face then cradled his head in both hands as though the thought of facing Admiral Johansen were worse than facing the Breen. When he looked up, Kirel couldn't tell if he was weary or plotting. "I'll see what I can do," he growled. "ETA?" "Fifteen minutes." "Go," he said, and cut the com. Kirel hung her head, running a hand through her hair and down the back of her neck. That she might be free of Sky Harbour Aegis was a remote possibility, but a possibility nonetheless. She did take comfort that there were worse assignments. Configuring her console to pan-SI and Portas com feed, she leaned back for one last look & listen, absorbing as much as possible before the projected onslaught. It could be worse, she thought. I could be undercover with the Breen.

  13. Mission Recap 26 September, 2008 Promotions and Awards: Aliana Lucindak is promoted to Ensign. Ensign Damian Porter receives a Service Stripe. Lt Cmdr James Riley joins the crew as Chief of Security. It is our final hour before the Breen arrive. The fleets are assembled to defend the station. Captain Muon calls a meeting of department heads to collate information and finalize strategy for internal defense. The Breen arrive. The Breen vanish. 080926ed.txt
  14. TBS is 15 hours. One hour to Breen attack. The station remains at Condition Yellow. Medical is directed to unpack some of their goodies in preparation for war (again). All non-essential personnel have been evacuated. The Alligned Fleets are deployed around the station and at strategic outlying areas to defend the Alpha Quadrant. 080919.txt
  15. Waiting to Exhale During the past few hours an uneasy stillness had descended on the CT, not unlike the eye of a storm. In this case, however, the second onslaught would not be a mere repeat of the first. It would be a storm unto itself, possibly one of unimaginable proportions. Aegis was apparently the first stop on a Breen rampage through the Alpha Quadrant. During her tenure with the Maquis cell commanded by Michael Eddington, Kirel had brief encounters with the Breen. The memory was not one she relished, yet she counted the experience as valuable. It had given her an unbiased view of a formidable enemy, something of which not many alive could boast. It had also left her with a profound respect for one of the most ruthless species in the Alpha Quadrant. Several minutes passed before Kirel realized she had been standing mid-CT, staring at the main tactical board, mindlessly watching the fleets reposition themselves. With the diplomatic stalemate somewhat resolved, the ships of the Ferengi Alliance, the Federation, the Cardassian Union, and the Romulan Star Empire seemed to be reforming in defense of Sky Harbor Aegis. A question concerning the chain of command disturbed her thoughts until she realized those fleets had collaborated during the Dominion War. Hopefully that cooperation would play itself out this time as well. In Kirel's estimation, the ships of the Ferengi Alliance were best to lead the defense, with those of the Cardassian Union a close second. Ferengi trade negotiations with the Breen must have given them insight. Negotiations were, after all, little different from the strategies of war: posture – position – attack – defend – regroup. The Ferengi had proven their worth in that regard many times. The Cardassians, on the other hand, had fully allied with the Breen. For a brief time they occupied an embassy on Breen itself; surely that had taught them something. But would the CoC be acceptable to the others? Would they object even when their very existence was threatened? That remained to be seen. One thing was certain: the Breen would show no quarter. Furthermore, they shunned open close combat. They would attack in stealth – hence, the fading in and out reported by Cdr Brown aboard the Portland. Yet, the fading puzzled Kirel as much as it apparently puzzled Cdr Brown. Approaching in stealth required full operable cloaking. Torak's words came to mind: "We've lost them. Again." Strange indeed. With Porter off-duty, Kirel had kept a close watch on the CT, hoping Captain Muon would arrive soon. At last sighting, Aegis had just over twenty hours to prepare. Though he probably did not need reminding, Kirel had advised Centurion Jorahl to check and possibly adjust the tritium mix on their power generators. All departments were on standby. Non-essential personnel would soon be evacuated. Once again Aegis prepared for war.
  16. Mission Recap for 5 September 2008 TBS – 10 minutes Sky Harbour Aegis continues to be surrounded by 55 D'Kora class Ferengi Marauders. Starfleet has sent a sizable contingent under the command of Admiral Johansen. Cdr Brown, commanding the Nebula class USS Portland, had arrived on a routine supply run. His ship has joined Admiral Johansen in defense of the station. The Cardassian Union, believing its home world may be in grave danger, has sent its fleet to watch the other two. Aboard the Station Drs Lepage, McKinney, Pavilion, and Belar have received 5 Bajorans and 2 humans who have been found hiding in the access conduits. Lt LeMorte and science officers Feretti and Lucindak are busy analyzing objects found with the stowaways, among which is a small bag of powder. Engineers Coleridge, Fletcher, and Garrett find themselves with little to do since the station is on lockdown and disassembling it during a time of crisis seems not to be such a good idea. Security Chief Ronin Shephard finds himself in great demand, torn between TAC, sick bay, and security reports. On the Diplomatic Front Sorehl plays a surprise visit to Ambassador Drankum hoping that the situation can be brought to a peaceful, diplomatic conclusion. At sim end the station was at Red Alert.
  17. Mission Recap for 12 September 2008 TBS - 4 hours. The Breen are now 24 hours away. Aegis is currently at condition yellow, pending approach of the Breen fleet. The fleets of the Ferengi Alliance, the Federation, the Cardassian Union, and the Romulan Star Empire remain in proximity. The diplomats have come to "a consensus" concerning revisions to the 2376 Treaty of Aegis. You may now check the temperature of the netherworld. We discover that a Vulcan does possess a sense of humor as we witness Sorehl answering Drankum, referring Joy's participation in negotiations, "I presume to avoid any mis-interpretations? Medical and science continue to explore the problems plaguing the group that was found stowed away aboard Aegis. The source of their illness remains a mystery, but tests show there may be a problem with their DNA. Aegis receives word from Cdr Brown, on recon aboard the USS Portland. The Breen fleet seems to be "fading in and out" and it doesn't seem to be a failure of the FX budget. During TBS: Cdr Chirakis has visited and met all new personnel (yes, she's that good). Mr. Porter and Ms. Feretti have received short but necessary rests. Heard Aboard Aegis:

  19. Before the Storm Red Alert. So be it. Kirel took it in stride, though a few minutes before it had seemed improbable that Admiral Johansen would make this move. It made no sense. Then again, she had no first-hand experience with Johansen and it wouldn't be the first time a Starfleet admiral had made a stupid decision. Security poured into the Control Tower stationing themselves in strategic positions by the lifts and around operations, tactical, and Captain Muon. Klaxons blared until Muon silenced them. Lights dimmed to optimize view of the master display. Kirel stood behind her console, brought up her personal configuration, then shifted to stare at the main screen. What are you doing? she thought as her steel gray eyes darted from console to main screen, watching Admiral Johansen position his ship awkwardly among the fleet. It was certainly not the best tactical position. Moreover, it was one of a series of moves that had piqued Kirel's interest since the escapade had begun less than an hour ago. At the first sign of escalation Ens Porter had brought tactical displays to the main viewscreen, making every feint, thrust, and parry visible to all in Command. At that point it was exceedingly obvious that the Ferengi fleet had no chance against the multi-species armada that had it outflanked and outgunned. With the station in their crosshairs, the Ferengi Marauders could inflict considerable damage, but soon after the fleet that surrounded them would pick them apart piece by piece. Check? Checkmate? What followed was an extraordinary chain of events. First Ambassador Drankum of the Ferengi Alliance returned for further negotiations. Then a Jeralla docked unannounced, unexpected, and only vaguely familiar to Kirel until she checked her secure SI feed. With Jeralla came an unidentified stranger whose stature, gait and mannerisms caught by the security cameras in the docking area triggered a memory. Could it be? If so, perhaps diplomacy at its worst would soon turn to diplomacy at its best. Mere minutes later came red alert. With Ambassador Drankum aboard? And possibly Sorehl? And Johansen had just moved his flagship into a vulnerable position on the board. Kirel stood amid the red-alert frenzy and stared at the tactical display, amazed. "What are you doing, Admiral?" she finally said aloud. "What are you doing?"

  21. Sky Harbour Aegis SimLog 29 August, 2008 Mission Recap – 29 August 2008 The Ferengi Alliance Merchant Fleet continue to blockade the station, making ship travel exceedingly difficult. The Nebula Class USS Portland under Cdr Brown maintains a respectable distance while the USS Lewis hangs tight, waiting to leave. The UFP and the Cardassian Union have sent their fleets to defend the station. Captain Muon is ready to call in the cavalry! Joy Two graciously arranges for the diplomatic meeting in the ambassadorial suites only to have her tasteful decorum uprooted by a gaggle of diplomats doing what they do best. Having finished testing the structural integrity of the station, engineers Coleridge and Fletcher plan how best to pull it apart: fix the microfractures, grab phasers and start hacking away at the bulkheads, or remove the seals around the airlocks that connect the sections as they were assembled separately, then some fun explosive decompression? Decisions, decisions… Our new Chief of Science, Lt LeMorte, introduces himself to the staff, then digs right in setting his team to work with medical for analysis of the items found in several Jeffries tubes in Pylon 2. Security Chief Ronin Shepard, with the assistance of engineering, apprehends some very strange stowaways. 080829.txt
  22. The Enemy Within "The Reaper." "Yes," replied Kirel. "There." She nodded. "Aboard the station." Kirel did not respond. SI-5 Director Torak's normal apoplectic frenzy had progressed to calm, focused determination. It usually took him several reports and more than one major incident to get to that point. Kirel imagined it was Aegis's political situation that had shifted him into high gear, and that, in her estimation, was an excellent catalyst. Nothing like a good war to set someone straight. "And is he… reaping?" Torak tossed one padd aside to replace it with another from a stack to his left. Throughout the conversation Torak's eyes had not left the padds, but he had managed to wave a hand here and there and occasionally massage his temples. No doubt he was concentrating on several reports, and, given that he was in uniform with all the fasteners in place, Kirel supposed he had just returned from a meeting of the entire directorship, possibly one that included members of the Council, or higher. "He's an engineer," she replied evenly, "in retirement from that particular line of work." She grinned. At this Torak raised his eyes to glare at the screen. His next statement would have included the words once and always, but it went without saying. She understood his desire for more information. The Reaper was SI's code name for Tylus Petrinius Jorahl, Centurion of the Romulan Star Empire. His reputation for picking apart inconspicuous bits of information and technology from various sources and piecing it together into a shockingly accurate picture had earned him that designation. That he was in retirement as an engineer aboard Aegis came as no surprise given the station's strategic position and its plethora of diplomats. Kirel had to admit she was mildly curious as to his true purpose. She also realized her true purpose aboard the station had also come into question from several parties. Yet, neither she nor Jorahl had made an effort to conceal their identities. The phrase hiding in plain sight came to mind. Torak was already moving on. He grabbed another padd. "Tell me of the doll," he said as he signed that padd and reached for another. "Yes. The doll. Curious thing, that," Kirel began. She leaned forward to assume a more interested posture, though the memory of her encounter with a midshipman engineer made her want to smile. "I ran into an engineer who had been working in the Jeffries tubes, assessing the structural integrity of the station in preparation for the move. She found the doll in a tube on Pylon 2, tube 98-B." "And in your assessment it resembles a work colony slave's toy, specifically a slave from the Portas System." Again Torak stopped working and raised his eyes to the screen. "Stowaways?" She had his full attention. Kirel folded her hands in front of her. "Probably. It would surprise me to find a station without stowaways. However, given the present situation both here and in the Portas System, and that the stowaways may have originated in Breen territory, their presence aboard Aegis is disconcerting. Also," Kirel reached for a sack and dumped its contents on the desk, "Centurion Jorahl has passed these additional objects to me." She picked up each in turn to allow Torak full view. Scattered on the desk were a spoon fashioned from scrap metal, a few small items of clothing, a bowl of questionable material, and a bag containing bits of food probably hastily discarded at the approach of the engineer. Stowaways never discarded food; it was too precious a commodity. "All has been reported to security. They are looking for them as we speak… …but by far the most interesting find is this." Kirel held up a small sealed packet of yellowish powder flecked with green. "I intend to pass everything to medical and science for full scrutiny. Hopefully they will determine the origin of the objects and, with DNA analysis, pin down the species. Of course," she placed the packet warily on the desk and carefully arranged the rest of the evidence around it as she spoke, "if the stowaways are caught it will make our job a lot easier." Torak nodded. After giving the packet a once-over his thoughts had obviously moved on to something more pressing – a dispatch from Ferenginar, perhaps, or the latest from Joy Seven, now stationed in San Francisco. "Keep me informed. Torak out." Kirel took a moment to carefully consider each item. Memories suppressed long ago slowly emerged. Cardassian overlords. Slave traders. Tools, clothing, bowls, and a few toys made from cast-offs or scraps scavenged from the overlords' dump. Her savior, GoragH. . She pitied the stowaways, but she pitied more those who had not escaped. Of course, there was the odd chance that they were not mere stowaways. Time would tell.
