  1. Mission Brief | Sky Harbor Aegis |27 March 2020 5 June 2388 - Stardate 2388.157 TBS is 2 hours. The time is 1300 hours (1:00 pm) Aegis Local. Aegis is slowly returning to normalcy. Most who were affected by the disease that threatened Aegis and took the lives of 37 personnel aboard USS Missouri have been released and returned to duty. Engineering is working diligently to repair systems. One question remains: has Commander Korjata become insane, or is another crisis on the horizon?
  2. On the Edge Chirakis Kirel He's just ...off. And not just similar to a bad day, but - different. He's often talked about dreaming he's someone else, and now he's acting different. Like a different version of Nijil. Mannerisms are off. The way he talks to us. Like it's someone doing a Nijil impression. Imagine someone impersonating you and not seeming familiar with blades. ~Lt Commander Jylliene Kital Jylliene’s words to Captain Chirakis were startling enough to immediately call Psychologist Amanda Davis. Had Commander Korjata succumbed to a mental disorder? Did he possibly have a residual effect from the disease that had plagued the station? Had stress given him a mental disorder, possibly schizophrenia? After consulting with the doctor, Kirel left CnC, hoping that another crisis was not on the horizon. “Lieutenant Garand, meet me in surveillance immediately,” said Kirel as she entered the lift. “On my way, Captain,” Garand replied, scrambling to put aside his work in time to meet the captain as she entered the security complex. “We have a situation, Captain?” “Possibly,” she replied as he fell in step with her. “I need to check the surveillance footage from main engineering, Alpha watch yesterday morning.” Upon entering her code, the door to Surveillance opened to a large area covered by assorted screens that hung strategically on every wall and displayed internal and external areas of the station. Security personnel alternately hunched or relaxed at their stations as they monitored and assessed data while a few others moved smoothly among them. Captain Chirakis and Lt Jeremy Garand exited that room and entered what they called The Back Door: the observation area reserved for superior officers. The door closed, Garand offered Kirel a chair, engaged a console and flicked his wrist to throw images of engineering on the main screen. “Any particular area of engineering, Captain?” he continued as he made a few adjustments. “Follow Commander Korjata, since he is in command. And… since we are dealing with privileged information….” She slipped on a headset just as Nijil’s image appeared. “Commander Korjata beginning….zero seven hundred Aegis local, June 1, ma’am,” the lieutenant said, moving aside. As Kirel watched, Nijil seemed puzzled, looking around, and fidgeting with equipment. An approaching engineer startled him, the engineer apologized, and it was downhill from there. “Sorry, sir. Just the MP,” said the junior engineer. “MP?” said Nijil, definitely confused. “The Morning PADD, sir. The issues from the previous day that we need to tackle today.” The commander didn’t seem to understand. He stared at the PADD a moment, then took the PADD and read until he noticed a group of engineers standing next to him. “Yes?” “Your assignments, sir?” asked the team leader. “Assig… oh. Oh! Let me look here. Something good for you. How about hydroponics. Check the water lines and climate controls.” As soon as they left, the commander looked up to the ceiling as if he was waiting for something. He raised his hands and whispered, “Any time now.” Kirel reached forward to freeze the screen. “Sweep engineering for an intruder. Focus on the overhead.” “Sweeping the area… focusing on the overhead,” Garand replied, then watched the captain’s expression shift from curious to alarmed as she removed her headset with a sigh. “Secure the screen, lieutenant, and tell me…. Have you witnessed this kind of behavior in engineering before?” she asked, purposely leaving out the commander’s name. “Yes, ma’am, several times. But never out of the ordinary. Things have been pretty crazy everywhere on the station lately, so he’s not the only one to be distracted. You know… lack of sleep, lack of engineers, and especially the lack of coffee.” “Um… coffee,” she mused, relaxing into the armchair. “How long have you been watching this particular area?” "In engineering?” He shrugged. “Just over a week, ma'am." “And behavior was close to normal until recently?” “Yes, ma'am. Close to normal. The medical situation was our first priority.” “As was mine, Lieutenant. For now, keep eyes on. Alert me immediately to anything suspicious. Watch for strange behavior, odd shifts in language, talking when there is no one there. And be aware: this information is confidential.”

  6. The End of the Beginning Aboard USS Missouri 0600 June 5, 2388 There are whispers in the emptiness between the stars, the meaning of which has all but vanished among the young. ~Ethan Neufeld Clad in full dress Sindar uniform, USS Missouri’s Captain Je’rit d’Ka stood by the viewport of his office, staring into space, beyond the ship, beyond Aegis, beyond planets, stars, and nebulae, beyond what seemed to be nothingness. What most would call a void, the ancients believed that movement among celestial bodies produced a sensual harmony, and they did. D’ka had heard them whisper since childhood. As he grew, the whispers grew with him. And in this day of mourning, the more he watched, the more he listened, and the more he heard. Some things he could control; others he could not. The pain he felt with the loss of 37 officers who had gone beyond the call of duty to help contain the Alien Alliance virus was almost more than he could bear. Commander Lei’ri stood beside him to watch, listen, and to give him solace if possible. But the solace was not forthcoming, so he kept a discreet distance, waiting for the captain’s agony to subside. “Are you familiar with an ancient terran lyricist, ‘Ri?” the captain asked as he continued to stare into space. “One with the surname Shakespeare?” “I am, Keann-aí.* But only what you have told me.” D’ka gave a slow nod, then turned to watch a distant stellar prominence and began, “How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank. Here will we sit and let the sounds of music creep in our ears. Soft stillness and the night become the touches of sweet harmony.” He sighed. “A beautiful piece, is it not?” “It is, Keann-aí. But I must ask, if I may…? “Of course.” “You have often said that you hear many things, Keann-aí. Do you hear this music in what seems to be a silent void?” “I do, ‘Ri,” he replied, turning to face him. “I always have. And what I hear in this music is profoundly sad, like a dirge, a burial song….” His voice trailed off. “Ten days, ‘Ri,” he whispered as his eyes darkened to the deep blue of mourning. “If we had been more vigilant," he continued somberly. "If we had deciphered the alien code more quickly. If we had been more cautious, more aware….” “Keann-aí,” Lei’ri interrupted quietly, “the past is gone. We must abandon those thoughts, put them aside, and look to the future.” After a moment, the captain’s eyes faded to a more contemplative blue as d’Ka turned to face him. “True, ‘Ri. We cannot bring them back. That I know all too well.” He paused for a moment of thought. “The Klingons have Sto-vo-kor, the Romulans have Vorta Vor, the Vulcans have Sha Ka Ree, the Terrans have Heaven, but the Sindar and Qr’var?” “A vast difference, Keann-aí. And we are fortunate.” An hour later the Captains d’Ka and Chirakis, along with Commander Lei’ri, stood on Missouri’s hangar deck, awaiting the arrival of a VIP shuttle. The fighter bay had been thoroughly cleansed. Bits of the alien stealth ship and its contents had been sealed in pods and sent toward the nearest star where the contents would be completely destroyed. Those who had perished in the virus were meticulously sanitized, clad in full dress uniform, and gently laid in burial pods, then draped in the symbols and colors of the house, the family, or the clan of the deceased. Her polished hull gleaming in the light of USS Missouri’s fighter bay, the shuttle settled silently on the deck. The captains and commander processed to stand by the ramp. With jaws set, eyes front, and expressions stern, they paused, then stepped to the side and turned, waiting to flank those who would exit. A moment later, with a whisper of hydraulics, the shuttle’s ramp lowered before a sea of blue, red, white, gold, silver, and gray—superior officers of the Joint Allied Powers. From the shuttle’s darkened interior the officers emerged and processed shoulder to shoulder, rank upon rank in strict formation, dress uniforms studded with insignia. A crisp command echoed from the bay’s entrance, bringing rank upon rank to sharp attention. The Honor Guard advanced in slow, strict step, their ceremonial boot heels clicking a cadence on the deck plates and cutting through the otherwise complete silence of the bay. At the bottom of the ramp, their boots slapped together before they executed a crisp about face and presented the flags of the Joint Allied Powers in tribute before the assembly, ready for the pallbearers to carry the deceased into the shuttle, to a place of honor where they would begin their journeys home. __________________ Keann-aí - The formal Sindar word for captain.

Chirakis: ::holding the cup, still somewhat skeptical:::: Chirakis: ::slightly more interested::: The high fat content. Alexis McFarland: What goes well with cream of ice, is pie of apple. ::takes out some slices of pie out of their fridge and places them on two dishes:: Tarisa: ::Shakes head.:: It has not been field tested. Dacia Sandero: Hope not. Cptn d'Ka: {{Kh’éile, we have lost more than 20 personnel so far.}} mimipavilion: That's what I keep thinking. Nijil tr'Korjata: Annisha> +Alex+ I'll be over. We need to introduce this to the gremlins as soon as possible. It is a mixture of dairy fat and sugar. Chirakis: Hopefully. Tarisa: The Captain was very insistent we proceeded as fast as possible. Scott Coleridge: I'll speak to Cayne and Kital about speeding up the removal of the gremlins. Perhaps we can rig a temporary solution until we have a more permanent one. Chirakis: Very well. If more information comes in, I will forward it immediately. mimipavilion: ::takes the PADD and looks through:: This mixture is that of ice cream. Dacia Sandero: Ice cream? Nijil tr'Korjata: Annisha> :: WIth her bowl :: What's going on? Tarisa: It’s where it originated from, yes. But since the fat and glucose molecules are all we need, everything else can be discarded. Chirakis: We cannot let this go uncontained. Tarisa: I was thinking we could make canisters to be used for the environmental controls system. mimipavilion: ::Nods:: Dacia Sandero: Hmm. mimipavilion: Do we need to do this station wide or just one local area? Tarisa: Miana> Yummy breakfast! ::Offers ice cream and pie.:: Alexis McFarland: Best breakfast. Cptn d'Ka: @ ::aboard Missouri::: Tarisa: +Dran+ Tarisa to Dran. I could use your help if you are able. Scott Coleridge: ::wishes he had more solutions:: Chirakis: That is all, Commander. I will inform you of any new information from Missouri. Tarisa: The first thing we need is to test it on the gremlins themselves. Could you make that possible? Dacia Sandero: The ice cream shouldn't affect their physiology or anything like that.. Tarisa: If it is successful, we should implement it station wide. mimipavilion: ::nods:: Scott Coleridge: Understood. Scott Coleridge: ::leaves Chirakis' office:: Tarisa: ::Looks to Dacia:: The final for it will not be ice cream, it will be barely noticeable with the exception of maybe a sweet smell. mimipavilion: Do you think hypos would be with the glucose and dairy only mixture or did you want to try something else? Chirakis: ::staring out the viewport, contemplating the danger we face:: Cptn d'Ka: @ ::consulting with their medical teams:: Dacia Sandero: That would be favourable for station inhabitants. Tarisa: ::Shakes head.:: We will be making a spray of sorts. Hypos will not be needed. Dacia Sandero: ::nods:: mimipavilion: ::nods:: Scott Coleridge: ::stops at his station to view updates and reports:: Tarisa: As mentioned, they should only notice a sweet smell. ::Working on the actual formula.:: Dacia Sandero: Nice. mimipavilion: Let's get the mixture set up to your specifications and I'll see if I can get the gremlins in a collective area. Tarisa: I understand they like treats. Dacia Sandero: Yes, if I am correct. Cptn d'Ka: @ {{Kh’éile, the count is now 37. Our medical teams are working without rest to stop the spread.}} Alexis McFarland: ::feeds ice cream to Annisha:: Yummy! Chirakis: :::sighs::: {{Understood. Dacia Sandero: I think we should go for it, why not? mimipavilion: Yes, Chocolate. Alexis McFarland: One can never have too many flavours. Tarisa: Miana> This should be familiar. The berries came from your elders. Nijil tr'Korjata: :: Nijil's head felt heavy :: Alexis McFarland: We broke our arms and legs for these berries. 12. Mission Brief | Sky Harbor Aegis |28 February 2020 3 June 2388 - Stardate 2388.155 TBS is 16 hours. The time is 0700 hours (7:00 am) Aegis Local. Aegis and USS Missouri continue to hunt for the cause of and a cure for a strange illness. A comprehensive review in the conference room was called to be sure that we are on the same page. Possibilities discussed included the gremlin DNA, their anatomy, and the chemical spray they release for protection. Could the real issue stem from the genetically modified, more potent gremlins on Missouri since their crew has experienced worse symptoms? Their area has been quarantined and their physicians are proceeding with caution. Aegis and Missouri’s personnel are collaborating on an antidote and/or a counteragent against the illness. Removing the gremlins from Aegis was considered a possibility. However, the resources needed to accomplish the move and where they would be sent present a problem.

Engineering might also need to assist if we decide to disperse the counteragent as some kind of aerosol. Scott Coleridge: Commanders Cayne and Kital, you're in charge of the logistics of rounding up and moving out the gremlins. Develop a concrete plan with best- and worst-case timelines based on available resources. Scott Coleridge: Consider building in some flexibility regarding your mode of transport… perhaps we will use a small convoy of ships rather than one larger vessel. 18. Mission Brief | Sky Harbor Aegis |7 February 2020 2 June 2388 - Stardate 2388.154 TBS is 12 hours. The time is 0700 hours (7:00 am) Aegis Local. Aegis and USS Missouri continue to pin down the cause of strange dreams, hallucinations, and allergies. Not everyone has been affected. Some personnel seem to have been passed over and/or no longer have a problem. Others continue to fight it off. A study that was passed on to security pointed to the gremlins’ VIP area as a possible origin, though that has yet to be verified. Approximately 15 to 20 personnel are still in the medical complex.
  19. The Little Things Security Locker Room A high pitched screeee echoed through security's locker room, the sound of Ens Stacy Slater twisting and poking at the door to her locker. “What the hell, Stace!” came from the other side. “Haven’t oiled that thing yet?” “Well, I would oil that if it took oil, Gaz! Find something that’ll stop the squeak and I’ll owe you one,” she retorted, finally twisting it enough to get her locker to closed as Ens Guido Gazelli rounded the corner and made himself comfortable against the locker next to her. “Seriously, Gaz,” she said on a sigh. “You’d think that a new starbase would at least have lockers that don’t attack you when you need ‘em.” He shrugged. “Could be worse. And it’s only the locker, right?” Another exasperated sigh, and she nodded, then straightened her equipment. “Graveyard’s got me off guard. And our little friends on deck 42, but I got....” She stopped cold. “Damn, Gaz. I left the bars in my locker.” “No problem. I got it,” he said, pushing away from the adjacent locker. One hefty jerk managed to pull the locker open. He grabbed the energy bars, then closed and secured the door without too much noise. “So, you’re on 42?” he asked, handing her the package, then continuing “Me, too,” as she slipped the bars into her satchel. “Awesome,” she managed as they moved out. “And we’re on two hour rotations, but I’m not sure it’s going to make much difference since it upsets our circadian rhythms, like the chief says.” She adjusted her uniform and ran a hand through her close cropped red hair. It glistened in the dimmed passageway illumination. The soft tread of her regulation boots might have been silent for humans, but not for gremlins. They apparently had "good sniffers", as her mom would say, and she was right. “So… what’s in the satchel,” Gaz asked as they stepped into the lift. “Smells great.” “They’re pretty good. From my mom.” Handing one to him, she continued, “I wouldn’t call them great. But our little friends love ‘em. Especially when they play up and down the passageway. They don’t make a mess so it’s no big deal.” The lift opened and she stepped out, but Gaz stared at her until the lift began to close behind him. “They play up and down the passageway?” “Yeah,” she said with a nod. “Sometimes climb the bulkhead. They play most of the night.” Slowing his pace, his skepticism echoed in his words. “They play most of the night.” “Yeah.” She stopped to stare at him. “You don’t see them, Gaz? I mean, they’re right there, coming our way.” He looked around. “No. No I don’t, Stace. We’re the only ones here.”

Science and Medical are on the verge of discovering the cause of illness that seems to target certain individuals and/or species. An immediate concern is the possibility that whatever is in the atmosphere could change genetic markers. Science is working on several things: Testing to judge the natural purpose of the illness. Is there a possibility of designed intent, or is it a side effect of something else? Will new atmospheric scrubbers from the shipyard help? Are the infected personnel safe? Are the gremlins part of the problem? Is stress from overwork causing or exacerbating the problem? Instead of hallucinations, USS Missouri personnel are fighting off allergies from the gremlin-like creatures' corporeal remains. As a precaution, they have quarantined several crew, and are in the process of obtaining new atmospheric scrubbers from the shipyards.

  23. Mission Brief | Sky Harbor Aegis |31 January 2020 1 June 2388 - Stardate 2388.153 TBS is 2 hours. The time is 1000 hours (10:00 am) Aegis Local. Science and medical are on the verge of discovering the cause of illness on Aegis. It seems to target certain individuals and/or species, cause unknown. USS Missouri’s personnel have been reassembling the Alien Alliance stealth ship that tried to attack Aegis. Two things have been found beneath the rubble: the caged corporeal remains of a small species similar to the gremlins, and a metal box that appears to be a ship control mechanism. None of the Alien Alliance were aboard.
  24. The Core of the Matter USS Missouri Despite USS Missouri's advanced technology, her secondary fighter bay's atmospheric scrubbing system struggled to keep up with airborne particles. As teams slowly re-assembled the remains of the Alien Alliance stealth ship, the crew began to sneeze, cough, and lose their balance… which isn’t exactly the best thing to do when you’re standing on a fragmented ship’s hull with a razor sharp piece of the hull in your hand. As per protocol, the medical team examined all personnel who had been in the bay. After filling them with antibiotics, they were placed in quarantine. Medical personnel hunted down the culprit and adjusted the scrubbers to deal with the allergen. They scrubbed down unaffected personnel and slipped them into environmental suits, complete with sealed helmets and re-breathers. And wasn’t that fun to work in. As he searched through the wreckage, Lt Bill McGrene adjusted his helmet and began to lift a sizable piece of the ship's exterior hull. “Damn,” he muttered, checking out the section. “Looks like a piece of cockpit. Maybe a piece of the bridge?” He sighed, checked it over thoroughly, then finally hollered, “Kazaski, get over here! I need a hand!” The ensign pressed his helmet com to reply, “Comin’ atcha, sir.” Then he began to weave among the pieces toward the lieutenant. “Grab the other side, Kaz. Watch your suit and your six so your suit doesn’t tear. Heft that side over,” McGrene continued, giving Kazaski room for a healthy heave. “Be careful ‘cause there’s something under…” A loud crash echoed through the bay, catching everyone’s attention as the exterior hull flipped off, bounced a few times, and came to a clanging halt. Pausing to catch a breath, McGrene turned toward what should be the ship’s interior. “Figures,” he muttered, pointing to the next layer. “Catch a breath, Kaz. I have no idea how many layers are under here. Ask me and I’d say the Alien Alliance is playing games, and somewhere in the great beyond they’re sittin’ at a bar downing a cold one and having a great laugh.” Another deep sigh, and he turned to the ensign. “Ready for the next one, Kaz?” “Ready as I’ll ever be, sir.” “Good enough. Check your breather, take an extra breath, and let’s go.” Beneath the exterior was another layer, and under that another one before an interior cabin appeared, loaded with…. They froze, staring at the interior’s contents. A whispered, “Damn. Tell me I’m not seein’ what I’m seein’, Kaz.” Swallowing hard, Kazaski replied, “Wish I could, sir. Call medical?” “Yeah. Get ‘em here fast,” he whispered to Kaz, then shouted, “The rest of you, get back to work. You did not see this! Got it?” A chorus of “aye, aye, sir,” came through the communication system. Bill stared at the opening, wishing he’d never seen it, and praying he’d never see it again. * * * * * * * Captain d’Ka stood behind the medical complex window toward the corporeal remains that had been pulled from the wreckage. CMO Mason Mckindley and Chief Engineer Adira Hynson stood beside him, watching several personnel in protective clothing carefully remove several small bodies from a cage. “Doctor, how long had they been in the ship?” asked d’Ka soberly, his eyes flashing red with anger. “Difficult to tell, Captain,” he replied. “Given their present condition, I can say that they’ve been dead for some time. Probably frozen until they were needed.” D’ka forcefully sighed into a nod. “Species?” “Slightly similar to the gremlins on Aegis, but only slightly. At first chance, we’ll process their DNA to pin down the species.” After due consideration, D’ka turned toward Chief Engineer Hynson and pointed toward a small metal box on the opposite table. “The box, Commander? Any idea why that would accompany the cage?” “No Captain,” she replied. “As soon as Dr Mckindley has scanned the box thoroughly to make sure it’s not contaminated, he’ll pass it on to us for examination.” “And your best guess?” “A control mechanism, Captain. One explicitly aimed at Aegis.”
