  1. It depends... I don't know the situation surrounding this particular case. It could be a player or it could be a GM. Regardless though... if a person feels comfortable enough not to need assistance, then all they need to say to the person offering is they would like to try it on they're own. That person in turn should respect that decision.
  2. Not generally... in the Academy, if the GM feels a player is lost or wondering what the heck to do, they might send a message to the player giving them some tips and feeding them a few lines to get them started. If you are getting to the point where you are comfortable with playing on your own, please feel free to let the GM know that. Part of they're job is to help you out and get you comfortable with how things work here. Welcome aboard.
  3. Edited topic to attach post since the poll itself did not seem to exist.
  4. Hello! First, welcome to STSF! I hope that you enjoy your time here with us. :D At this point, I would not worry too much about creating a character yet. That will come later when you complete the Academy program and are posted to an Advanced Simulation. For now, I would suggest you attend our Academy games. (You find find a list of days and times on our schedule page.) The only thing you need to do to participate in those is check the schedule to find when the next one is supposed to be and show up to it about 10-15 minutes before the start time. The GM in charge of the room will eventually begin taking posting assignments and give you instructions on how to recieve a post for that event. While you play, our GMs will watch your development and try to help teach you the basics of what it takes to be sucessful in our advanced games. Once they think you have it down pat, they will promote you and then you will be able to join one of our advanced games. (Our advanced games have storylines that run multiple weeks and months as well as a set roster where each person plays the same roll each week.) You do your character development in your Advanced sim, but while in the Academy, you don't have to worry about that. Just focus on the mechanics and such for now. :D If you have any questions, please feel free to post them. We have a large community for you to draw expierence and knowledge from. You can also feel free to contact me directly via either Private Message here on the message boards (Click on the New Messages link above just below the members link) or you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Again, welcome!
  5. I always thought Fred was a bit of a drama queen... this explains a lot. :D
  6. It's basically what being an actor is all about. So instead of just reciting some lines someone else made up for you, you are doing your own lines. :) You're both the writer and the actor in this situation. Not one or the other. In online role play, we become the writer. An actor does the interpretation of the writing... here.... ya interpret your own stuff.
  7. Yep. I've actually participated in a few live action RPs before and had a blast with it. Not quite on this scale, but in a group regardless. It gives you a chance to really explore a character more in-depth, and give you an insight to it that you might not normally have as you are forced to actually BECOME that character. :D
  8. I can't complain about the dorms I lived in while in college. I was in a brand new building my sophmore and junior year (lived off-campus my senior year). It had working AC, new computers, free high speed internet, and the rooms were not too small. Now... the school is actually in the process of building actual APARTMENTS on campus for those who want "the best of both worlds" with on/off campus living. It includes a private bath/kitchen, and a living room type of room seperate from the bedroom. They've got them so they can either be 1, 2, 4, or 6 person apartments. Quite nice actually... I was impressed. If it was available when I was there, I would have been tempted to go for it.
  9. dinner? Then no desert for you!
  10. Nah. I just ban A9 from the server and it's all mine. =) Problem solved. ~ Maniac Randy
  11. If you're really nice, give an appropriate bribe, and send me a PM... I might just change it for ya.
  12. The warn ability is a feature of the board that is used by the board's moderators and administrators (IE: the GM Council and members of the GM team). When a person violates the rules of the forum, they CAN have a warning placed on they're forum account. Once you recieve 5 warnings, your posting privliges are automatically removed. (The only way to get them back is to deal with A9, Sovak, or myself) Each person can see they're OWN warning level. (So that you can know if you've been warned, what your current level is, and why you were warned.) Members of the GM Council can see EVERYONE'S warning level (since they also are the ones placing the appropriate warnings.) GMs/GM Council members are the only ones who can issue warnings on the forums. In general... honestly it's nothing to worry about. You are sitting at a 0% warning level, so you are fine. This has been something that has been there since we moved to our new message board system around the start of the year.
  13. I enjoy poking around in Everquest as I have time, and I also enjoy playing Risk II still quite a bit. Lately the amount of free time I have had has been rather lacking... but when I find it, that's some stuff I like.
  14. (Topic title edited)
  15. The problem again becomes getting those people to actually be there. hehe. I have done continuing plots before that try to have the same people, but what happens when the person for whatever reason does not show up? You can't leave certain spots open. They've got to be filled somewhere. But like I said, this is up to each individual GM to decide what storyline best fits the circumstances. GMs have various scenarios that they are faced with and can respond with an appropriate storyline. The Academy was never really designed to be a full part for a contuing storyline or a solid roster. That's the whole purpose behind the Advanced Sims. The training events are simply there to teach the mechanics of being able to move to an advanced game. ;)
  16. Typo corrected
  17. Each individual Academy team make a decision on what type to plot/ending to use depending on different factors. Some of them include (but are not limited to): - The number of people there - Cadets being watched for graduation (GMs will use different styles of plots/endings to see how someone being watched for graduation will handle it) - The mood of the GM - What types of plots they've run lately - How the cadets respond to the storyline (if they "just don't get it" chances are they're going to go boom...) The situation each time varies a bit. ;)
  18. I don't know if you are running Virtual Windows on top of a Mac, or something else that could be possibly affecting your Java, but that is not there for the majority of the people. Part of when you program java is having to identify certain aspects of the window, including the toolbars (because they can be customized). You're most likely seeing the code ID. It's nothing to worry about, it's not going to break your computer or anything. But for most folks those simply are not there. ^_^
  19. The original topic was requesting that we consider adding an Academy on Friday evenings. From there the topic has been going off thread, so I'm going to close it along with the note that it will be something that I will be sure that is passed onto the GM Council for consideration. If it's something that can be arranged (meaning we can find a GM to commit to running an event at the time), we'll add it to the schedule. ~ Randy (the closer closer) Calvert
  20. Hi guys... One of the things that has made STSF actually work is avoiding getting overly complicated. There is no real way for the GMs to know when someone is ready to graduate unless THEY see them. I personally won't ever graduate someone unless *I* have seen them in action regardless what I have heard. Usually multiple times. Having these events count for graduation would not really work because there is no way for GMs to measure the progress of a person and acurately document/monitor. If some of the people running unofficial games want to run games officially, then apply to be a GM. ^_^ Go through the training and we can start working from there. But to have members be able to start they're own sim randomally in the rooms and then have it count for graduation opens a big can of worms. lol. I encourage folks to be active in the forum, by all means. Feel free to use the rooms when they're not in use. But I think we start getting away from simplicity if we start expanding it too far.
  21. Don't make me open a can of bork on ya'll. ^_^
  22. Was that how we got you Vex? ^_^ Seriously though... in the time that STSF has officially been around, we've had some great players come through. Even before it was official, there was a core group of people that have been around for quite a while that had all worked together to create a group the way we had invisioned it to be. I'm very proud of what has been done so far, and the fact that we've kept this about the game and avoided the problems sometimes seen elsewhere when it becomes more than that. It's the players that make the group, not the website, or how many sims we say are there. With the people that we have, and the people coming through now... I'm excited and believe that we still have a lot to look forward to.
  23. The power of Webmaster. :D You only see what I want you to see. :P
  24. The yellow arrows are special Admin tools. Mine... ALL MINE! Muhahaha.... (OK, forgive me. I gotta get something. It's my birthday today and I can't have cake. lol) And you got your name changed Nemesis. You can't get it all. lol.
