  3. Whispers In The Wings, Angels Protect Us Personal Log: Angelis,John,A.,<Arch Angel>,Lt.Jg. U.S.S. Reaent 2nd. Squadron, 420 th. Light Fighter Group Computer ..Begin Log:...Beep... Closing the final entry on the PADD and forwarding the news to the bridge Mr.scherer has infact performed another of his miracles in the restoration of at least one fighter launch bay to full readiness. The fighters have been rearmed and fueled, crews and pilots standing by for rapid use and deployment should the need arise. I still maintain the suggestion to retrieve as much data from the listening/and repeater transmissions devices in this system might be a wise choice to pursue. The Captain is on an away mission leading a team to the planet Organia on a fact finding mission to answer questions we have no answers to. The assigning of an unexperienced pilot for the shuttle in my opinion could greatly jeopardize that mission as he has not had any time as pic other than that at the academy, No detraction intended to the young pilot...just the opposite. I agree on the principle of the need for hands on experience for some real field stick time. The decision was made, In my opinion any seasoned pilot from the squadron would have sufficed for the mission without sacrificing the inegrity of the wing or the ship as well should the fighters be needed the pilot would not have been alone should an adverse situation arise that warranted immediate cover. I returned to my duties overseeing the repairs and maintaince of the fighters when it occurred to me we may just need either reconniance or support to our AT on the shuttle. I immediately sought out the engineering team performing repairs under the flight deck and queried as to how long it might be until a bay could be restored to operational status for the launching of the fighters. One bay has been restored to full operational status and the deck officer has advised the readiness of part of the squadron as green. I have the feeling and the dutiful concern things are going to be heating up soon from my past experiences on this ship and otherwise. I sincerely hope for an uneventful end to this mission for all parties concerned. Computer...End Log::..Beep..

  5. Study: Hummingbird chirps aren't chirps BERKELEY, Calif. (UPI) -- U.S. biologists said several chirps and whistles made by some hummingbirds and thought to be vocal are actually created by the birds' tail feathers. University of California-Berkeley graduate student Christopher Clark and former grad student Teresa Feo used a high-speed camera to record the "dive-bomber" characteristic of the Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna). The researchers discovered the chirp a male bird makes at the bottom of his dive coincides with a 60 millisecond -- faster than the blink of an eye -- spreading of his tail feathers. Wind tunnel tests confirmed the split-second tail spread produces a loud, brief burst that sounds like a chirp or beep. "This is a new mechanism for sound production in birds," said Clark. "The Anna's hummingbird is the only hummingbird for which we know all the details but there are a number of other species with similarly shaped tail feathers that may use their tail morphology in producing sounds." Clark's adviser, Professor Robert Dudley, said the phenomenon illustrates the strength of the evolutionary process, and sexual selection in particular, to derive novel functions from pre-existing structures. The research is reported in the online edition of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

  8. A New Best Man A Joint Aaron Westler, and Arch Angel log: Angel had finished reviewing the communicae from Zafira. I hope for only the very best for you boss, more accurately friend and brother in arms, fellow pilot. I only wish I had gotten the message sooner I would certainly have been there to see you off and congratulate you on your new assignment as well as the well deserved promotion. The departure of Zafira from the Reaent left a range of emotions in Angel ranging from the feeling of truly missing a dear friend,as well as a very competent commanding officer in the least. The other emotions shared were gratefulness to have learned and shared so much with a fellow pilot and had survived more than a few skirmishes with him and the wing. The happiness for his advancement and well deserved new posting. The sadness was there as well manifesting itself in the form of a feeling that the last time they all were together was for the upcoming blessed event Angel and Schawnsee were to embark on. Zafira was going to be missed indeed, Warp speed my friend, and may your six always be clear was the final notation Angel included in the communicae he forwarded to Zafira and was delivered to his new assignment ...of course as well was the thank you for the most gracious gifts and the absolute Honeymoon package he included. Aaron was seated at the bar at Red Star, sipping Lemon water as he went over the club's finance's with KBear. Another successful and profitable week had gone by,and there were discussions of boxing matches and karaoke in the air. Angel sat at the viewer for some time thinking of Zafira when the reliasation came suddenly that he was without a best man for the upcoming wedding. Thinking out loud , Now whom in my circle of friends could I possibly ask to replace Zafira as my best man. Running down his buddy list going over the names ...the answer dawned upon him..."Aaron";Afterall he had known him for quite some time, both he and his cousin Eagle regarded Aaron and the others at Red Star as close friends. Thumbing the comm link Angel looked up and found the proper comm link and keyed the hail button hoping Aaron was at work and available to talk for a few minutes, as well the hope he would accept the rather short invitation notice he was about to relay to his friend. Aaron put down the PADD as he heard the video comm beep, He made his way around the bartop to the terminal, and accepted the incoming call..."This is the Red Star ...Well what do you know ...", He chuckled . "Hi Angel". Angel looked as Aarons face appeared on the viewer smiling. Hey my friend, I hope I didn't pull you away from an important duty...chuckling a bit Angel looked on. Aaron smirked and replied .."Just payday my friend. What can I do for you?". Angel was a bit hesitant for a second then spoke . First of all it is really good to see and speak with you, I understand from my soon to be wife Schawnsee you and KBear have been taking good care of her at Red Star. That is with the exception of that cousin of mine Eagle whom sprang the news of our plans a bit prematurely. Pausing to laugh a moment..At any rate Aaron what are you doing in oh...let's say a couple of weeks?. Raising an eyebrow Aaron replied "Find a lucrative business opportunity ? I don't have anything planned. Why?". Taking a deep breath..well here we go was Angel's thoughts as he replied , Aaron it appears I am without a best man, Zafira my commanding officer was abruptly reassigned to another ship, Would you possibly be interested in taking that singular honor?. Well of course I would Angel was his reply smiling. It would be my pleasure, Just give me a date and time. Aaron ...that is absolutely great my friend, I will be seeing you at Red Star this week ,of course Schawnsee as well, Eagle I am sure will be there. We can discuss the details then....seeing KBear peering over Aarons shoulder and listening and grinning to a great degree, And please tell KBear I think Schawnsee has a matter to converse with her as well. Aaron looked sideways and grinned..."I think she got the message..." . Thank you again my friend, You have no idea what this means to me. I look forward to seeing you and KBear then. "Likewise, Angel. See you soon". Angel closed the comm...Thinking of Zafira, and thanking the stars for Aaron's willing and nonhesitatant acceptance of the position of best man. Aaron was indeed a stand up kind of man, and a good friend . In this Universe these days one cannot have enough good friends. Looking at the time Angel realized he was soon to meet his bride to be and finalize all the plans, and relay the good news. End Log...

  12. A Talk With The Family Personal Log: Angelis,John,A.,Lt.Jg. Computer begin recording:...Beep... The Computer had notified my comm channel was open and party waiting to be placed on screen. Thumbing the switch the Visage of both his parents filled the screen. Commodore Mark Angelis(retired) still looked as laid back as he had when he and my mother had been at the port seeing their son off to his first assignment. My mother Eloni as radiant as I remembered. Mother, Father ...Angel greeted them attempting to be as non shilant as possible. Father just looked on as if seeing right through my facade as easily as one peers through so much transparent aluminum. Mother just smiled that all knowing smile, Damn so many light years apart and they appeared to be able to read me like a tactical display. Father I can clearly understand his approach to sizing up another, He was a retired flight group commander afterall;not easy to get one over on the old man. Mother...well with her special gifts in the way of the other part of my family, she has been on the elder council and a strong teacher in the no speak way of the people for as long as I can remember. Son greetings from Earth...I understand there is a matter you need to discuss with us. now that was Mark Angelis to the core, straight to the point all business. I could not help but chuckle a bit at him, Father as subtle as and warm as always I see,Good to see and speak with you both. I noted the silence of my mother, though her sly grin and her pircing Blue eyes spoke more in silence than many speak in words. Yes Mother... I started the next round of interrogation, you have heard as I am sure by way of the council and the vote therein taken I have asked your blessings in the matter of my Little One becoming my wife. Eloni was much more eloquent in her expressions and conversations than my Father, I suppose that is one of the reasons they appear to compliment each other so well. Mother expressed her joy and blessings as were the tribes at large. The lone exception in the voting process was apparently my brothers grudgingly given approval during the polling from the family. Howard is my brother and Mother assured me he was only speaking in jest, his remark as was relayed by her" I will not give approval in this matter..for it is impossible for any woman to find him desirable let alone fall in love with him". I could not hold it in any longer I erupted into laughter, all the while Eloni looked on concerned I would take the comment to heart and take an offence at the remark. I looked on as my Father broke into a hearty laugh as well...the sheer look of total disgust at the reaction from he and I on Mothers features merely added to the laughter. Eloni shook her head, mock look of anger on her face...followed by a wide smile told all was well. I will never understand you men, however I do not need to she as coyngly put her tongue out at my Father. I understand Mother what Howard had stated, as well do I understand why, He and I are very close and love each as brothers should. He said the words for he probably feels this will place more distance between us, next time you see him just remind him he is married and it has not detracted from our relationship a bit. Mother began to query as to where we had decided to have the union,as well as the thoughts of the entire village, when Father chimed in as it had been his desire to one day see his Eldest son be betrothed at the Scottish side of the families ancestral home in Scotland. Sitting there listening I realized this was a conversation best held for another day. I interrupted them as they were going on,and on...Well folks I must be going, have to report for duty soon..I love you and will speak with you tomorrow, must run. They waved and stated they would be seeing me tomorrow on the comm and ended it with their love. Yessss...tomorrow would be another day to deal with indeed. Computer End Log:: ..Beep..
  13. Future Through The Past ------------------------------------------ Personal Log: Angelis,John,A.,Lt.Jg.,Fighter Pilot ; U.S.S. Reaent Computer begin recording; Bleep... At the lowest of times in spirit and emotions a bit of joy and peace comes. I have been awaiting the word from Group Commander Zafira on the disposition of the fighter wing pilots and support personnel for the group. I had attended the little party with Zafira, And my friend V'Roy the doctor had thrown. I am sure the doctor was well aware of the overall feelings and spirit of the crew. The level of tension and depressed emotions of the crew permeated the Sick Bay turned party reception and gathering center like a dark cloud. I know in my heart Doc and the staff in the medical department were doing their best to ease the transition of some of the crew that would not be with the Reaent much longer. The crew in attendance I think tried their collective best to hide , or reveal their true emotions in the matter. This was delightfully noted as "some" of the crew even went to great trouble to bring cheer to the somber mood of the room by showing up dressed in a fashion that was definitely not Fleet apparel. That being said it was a welcome break the ice and the almost funeral type atmosphere present. I called Schawnsee to inquire how long it was going to be before she was going to join the rest of us. The tone of her voice;response was a bit distressing, One could literally interpret her feelings over the badge comm. link. I know she is concerned over the fact she and I may become separated ...just post being engaged. I had no intention of not introducing her to Zafira,Afterall he was to be my best man, with V'Roy as honored friend as well. The rituals and customs of both our peoples were very explicit on this matter and intended to be followed as close to the mark as was in the scope of possibility. Schawnsee arrived,we spotted each other in the crowd . I excused myself from my fellows and proceeded to her, appearing as straight and high spirits as was expected in this situation. I had dressed in my until now secondary proper dress uniform, never worn before. All the creases were strike, extra starched and crisp. I desired to be an example of the proper Fleet officer and gentleman to my Little One;as much as an example to the other crew life and duty continues ,traditions will still carry on. The Captain entered the room, All could observe the pressure he was carrying on his shoulders as it pertained to recent events and the decisions that bore heavily on him as it pertained to the crew. The crew that occupied the room seemed to almost stop in complete silence when he broke from the usual meet and greet sessions. Captain Fred is the prime example of a true Star Fleet Captain..he attempted to address the room in a professional manner, and did so, Pausing ever so briefly between statements to take time to gather and rein in his emotions he was obviously suppressing. All the crew enjoined in a toast he made to all,as well as this fine lady we have...and hopefully will continue to serve; The Reaent as I and others in the far distant past have referred to in respect and love. The crew having heard the announcement form our CO began to disperse and take solace as well as deal with the finality of what had previously been only scuttle butte on the ship. I watched the Captain as he returned to the company of Doc and the XO and others. It must surely must be a task indeed to address a crew and advise them that some of them would not be here in a few days, some mere hours as they were being transferred or given extended leave. I continue to refer to our CO in this log for he has demonstrated the very essence of a commanding officer that with a single word commands respect, however he as well is a commander that assumes the responsibility and love of his crew as a family;sure to sacrifice himself to save them were it necessary. The qualities defined by him should be a shining example to the standard of a true Fleet Captain. I am sitting at my small desk in my quarters thinking of Schawnsee, the door chime rang. I rose half way expecting Zafira to be there with the news ,it was not he, a yeoman was there..simply handed me a small package, had me scan and verify acceptance of the box..upon thanking her politely I read the scan address,it was from Earth, I have been waiting on this. This small box contains the small articles that should bring a bit of lift to Schawnsee spirits,a bit of joy and peace;reassurance that life and hope will continue what ever the future brings., Computer end log:: Bleep...

  17. Solemn News And Bad Timing Personal Log: Angelis,John,A.,Lt.Jg., Pilot /Wingman/lead Pilot Bravo flight. 2 nd. Squadron; 420 th. Light Fighter Group; NCC-3345-G, U.S.S. Reaent Computer Begin Log: Whir,Click,Beep.. Where to begin I find myself asking and looking at the computer and the display on the same. I had just spent the past few days split between assisting in the fighter bays and recording the repair data and progress. I had as well became engaged to Schawnsee and had been in communication with our respective tribal affiliations back on Terra . Schawnsee had just began to become at ease and feeling more comfortable with our upcoming wedding plans . The repairs on the main flight hangar had been an excellent example of some of the fleets finest engineers;not to mention the efforts of most of the ships flight personnel dept.working in close unison with the engineers. Taking an overall survey of the dept. and collecting data for a report to Zafira was actually looking pretty good taking in to account the pummeling we received in our recent encounters. we had sustained massive to the bays, sub and super structure, offices, and deck regions. The crews had literally been working round the clock. The ship had been underway for a short time when I had finished my report to Zafira who had been called to a meeting with the command team. Upon completion of the report and forwarding of it to the command teams computer I went to the pilots longue poured me a tall neat scotch and was reflecting on just how lucky we all had been as well the cost in lives. The count of functioning flight ready status of our fighter contingent was fifteen post repairs and testing. The flight bays were repaired and given a green status for duty. I just knew our flight leader was going to find that to his liking as it should be of good news to the command staff. I had thought Zafira was going to at last be able to take a break for a change; To what extent the break meant I had no way of knowing until post report . I was quickly advised the squadron is deactivated effective immediately. The news was like a blow to the head,a punch in the gut. Instead of the congratulatory response one might expect, the opposite was apparent. I could only sit and stare at the picture of a classic P-51-D I had managed to salvage from the wreckage and rehung on the wall once the area had been repaired. I am now waiting on My boss to join me and the other pilots that have been informed. Pouring another scotch and making a toast to the squadron and the ship and crew I find my thoughts drifting to my little one and our future. I feel there is dreaded news to come in the near future. I can only hope this will not separate us before we are given the way to continue on the ship until either we are back on mission status or the security and flight department can be assigned or transferred to another ship together or maybe;just maybe extended shoreleave until said repairs/refit of the Reaent can be made and all departments called to return and report. I have personally found no better ship and crew to serve with and do not seek transfer or assignment to another ship. I stand with my fellow pilots, and ships crew in the hopes and optimistic expectations in the return of the Reaent to full mission and duty status. I must seek out Schawnsee and find out what she has found out about the situation as it pertains with the security department. I look around and see a crew that appears to be in a state of shock; Akin in appearance to have had their very heart ripped from their collective breast at the news. I look around and see the faces of the various officers and the crews from their departments. I look around and see the looks of despair as the obvious concerns of their individual futures as well as of their ship mates have creeped onto their normally content expressions. I know and see this as I am one of them, And the concerns are valid....Computer End Log...Whirl...Beep.... :D

  21. Honoring Our Dead,Survivors A Living Testimony To Their Courage Personal Log: Angelis,John,A.,Lt.Jg.,Pilot: Fighter Sqd. U.S.S. Reaent Computer begin log: Beep... Angel has just finished his assigned duties as they pertain to securing, and assisting in the repairs of the flight deck/hangar. I have completed the inventory of fighters at flight ready status, uploaded my logs to my flight leaders console. I rushed to my quarters to shower and change into my best dress uniform for the services to be held for our honored dead. Looking in the stainless steel mirror I cannot escape the memories of the recent past events on the Reaent, And ultimately the cost in lives. Lives that were given freely without hesitation for the continued survival of the ship and crew. The memories of my beloved little one Schawnsee and her acceptance of my request for her hand in marriage. I can sense her feelings of apprehension and dread , I shall have to set her mind at ease on the matter. I do not know which startled her the most, The question,or her reaction to the elder councils support of the decision, their blessings. The elders as well forgiving her of her actions and change of appearance for the mission. Heading for the door I still know her confusion and questions as it pertains to our coming union. again I must address the matter with her,I am well aware of her almost child like trait for rushing in where Angels tread lightly. That trait as much as any of her traits endears her to me, Her impetuousness actually lightens the overall dark and foreboding atmosphere at times. schawnsee should be finished with her duties by now transferring detainees and the survivors the Commander and our away team managed to beam back just in the proverbial nick of time. I still have the vivid memory of looking at Zafira and speaking to him as the bay we were in began to erupt all around us. The transporters saved our hash one more time. Entering the Transport lift I directed my destination to the main lock, time to meet Schawnsee and assume our position in bidding farewell to our shipmates for the last time on this plane of existence at least. I and my little one know all to well this is just the beginning. There is much more to come in the overall tapestry woven in the galaxy and we all are an integral part of it. ::tapping commbadge: Angel to Schawnsee, Awaiting you at the main docking lock , Angel out. 24. " With Deep Thoughts Come Revelation" Personal Log: Angelis, John, A., Lt.Jg. Computer begin recording:..Beep... Angel entered his quarters drained both mentally and physically. The preceding days have been taxing to say the least. Turing the lights down low I have gathered my shell to light the sage and cedar. I give thanks to our creator and our ancestors for the favorable outcome of our recent trials. I give thanks for the safe return of the away team members as well as the ones that had been enslaved. I offer up prayer for those of the crew that unselfishly gave their own ultimate sacrifice so many others might live. The young security officer Eric comes to mind , His lone act made the possibility of the survival of this ship and crew a firm reality. The fighter bay has been exhaustive work, The repair of some of the fighters that were either damaged during the structural failure of the bay, or the damage wrought when the bay doors were manually opened and the subsequent decompression. The carnage of the results of the Romulans unsuccessful attempt to mount an assault team to retrieve a prisoner from our brig. Yes the brig indeed, the thought comes to mind again of little one again placed in a perilous situation, doing her duty sworn. The revelation occurs to me that life is so short on this plain of existence to not savor and enjoy each and every available moment gifted us by the powers that reign . I have spent the majority of my life following and honoring the teachings of our elders and ways. I have kept true my sworn duty to the Council, and Star Fleet, I have never asked for quarter or expected any on a field of battle. The recurring revelation still manages to seep into my consciousness we are here for a short time, revel and accept the blessings and gifts that have been lavishly placed upon your table. The recent past events scream at me as if to confirm the thoughts of mortality and limited time. My fellow pilots as well the other departments are some of the most dedicated individuals it has been my honor to serve with. Each crewman living and working day to day never knowing what the end of each day will bring though the faces of the individuals at times reveal more than the spoken word may relate. I have been away from my own quarters for so long I had practically forgotten recent subspace communicaes from the elder council on my inquires made to both they and the clan elders of both little ones, and mine. "Pausing" to bring up the messages that were encrypted and sent to ship personnel ,Angel read the various responses. I see the elders are unanimous in their decision. The easy part is over, now the hardest part is yet to begin. I must contact Schawnsee to reveal and go over the findings of the council. Again more thoughts come to mind, how will she take the news, how will she react to the news, how in the name of our forefathers will she given this news be able to totally grasp fully the news?. I know we had parted from each other earlier, it is late and I know we both need the rest. His comm badge "chirped", it is my little one. The matter of timing to give her the news has apparently been provided, looking at the sage and cedar still smoking, and the trade blanket upon which he sat, he smiled. To my forefathers again I give thanks, he talked to her for a brief moment, relaying the importance of them speaking now and not later. Angel rose from the blanket, turning and headed for the door to meet Schawnsee, Computer...End Log:..Beep...
