  1. Starfleet PRofile Sivuk of Vulcan name: Sivuk place of birth: Shikar, t'kasi, 40 eridani a Gender: male marital status: unbonded age: 29 Vulcan years height: 2.1m (6.8') build: average dist marks: none Sivuk is the eldest son of Sakel, present Vulcan Ambassador to the Federation Council, and Virun, daughter of Sarek by a late marriage. Sivuk grew up in diplomatic circles but preferred science over politics. He attended the Vulcan Academy of Science, graduating second in his class. His fields of study there included astrophysics, geophysics, and cybernetics. After graduation he attended Starfleet Academy, from whence he graduated on Stardate 02082.9. Posted to USS Raeant on stardate 02082.9 as Assistant Science Officer. Promoted to Chief Science Officer. Promoted to Lieutenant, junior grade. Promoted to full Lieutenant on stardate 0307.10
  2. Science Log, Stardate 030619.22 Sivuk of Vulcan USS Reaent NCC 3345-G The entire situation had too many inconsistencies. Since leaving Starbase 345, the Reaent had been drawn into more and more bizarre situations, the first of which was the demise of the USS Cairo. Scans of New Rigel's moon revealed a settlement with limited technology, yet Reaent had been successfully attacked from the moon's surface, her shuttle and shuttle bay targeted with extraordinary accuracy, resulting in injury to several crew, among them assistant science officer Ltjg Travis Kroells. As Sivuk stood near Kroells's biobed, listening to Dr. Smith's report of Kroells's condition, he simultaneously processed what information they had gathered from scans, pieces of a puzzle that defied connection. Had he not been Vulcan, Sivuk may have been overcome by the extent of Kroells's injuries, but he realized an emotional response was illogical, for such a response would do nothing to hasten Kroells's recovery. His best recourse was to receive Dr. Smith's report and go about his business, trying to decipher what data they had and fill in the gaps with educated theory. At this point, Sivuk's best guess -- as humans might put it -- was mere speculation. Sivuk speculated that there were two civilizations on New Rigel's moon, one overt and one covert, for whatever reason. Much of what has happened so far did not make sense, and the possibility existed that most of it was a ruse -- false information, if you will, to throw Reaent off the track. The disappearance of nearly a thousand colonists from New Rigel, the destruction of the Cairo, the mysterious reappearance of the Cairo (or an impostor) in the New Rigel system, an ion storm, rumors of an Iconian gateway, the energy field on the moon, its sudden disappearance, the attack on Reaent's shuttles and shuttle bay . . . . The only answer Sivuk had at this point was that there was no definitive answer, and that, of course, was unacceptable.
  3. Seeing through a glass darkly Sivuk of Vulcan Science Officer, USS Reaent Whispers in the dark, murmurs in the corridor: rumors of an Iconian arch present on the planet ran rampant through Reaent's crew. Speculation on the possibilities of dimensional transport was not only the topic du jour, but a distraction from the task at hand. Therefore, when Sivuk reported to Captain Michaels, he was careful to describe the data outline on the main viewscreen as an "arch-shaped object" and not an arch. They were, in essence, looking through a dark glass, which, if an energy source such as a light were put behind the dark glass, would create a shadow producted by the object behind the glass. They had little positive data, so the science department had used shadows and negative space — what was not there — to create an outline to determine what might be there. As Sivuk explained, "The energy readings on the surface of New Rigel are being distorted by energy patterns from the moon, and visa versa. However, the patterns we are observing are more distortion patterns that the sensors and computers are reading as energy fields." In actuality, they were energy voids. Sivuk would have continued his long-winded explanation, but in mid-sentence the shuttle disappeared from sensors, the energy field around the moon disappeared, and both the shuttle and Reaent came under attack from a base that, according to Captain Michaels, should not be on the moon's surface. Some technology, more advanced than evidenced on the surface, had shielded its presence and allowed the base to successfully target the Reaent. Most illogical.
  4. Science Department Report 030205 Sivuk of Vulcan USS Reaent NCC 3345G Commander Ridire's Report to Captain Michaels: After the storm prevented the away team from leaving, we decided to explore the facility more fully, but decided to try to return to the ship because there was trace evidence of possible biocontamination. We found the power generator room and the computer lab. While Lt Shamor and Ensign Vanroy tried to get the generators and the computers operable, Mr. Kroells explored some of the lower levels. After a short while he reported that he had found a cryo unit. Against standard policy and my orders he activated its wake-up sequences. He finally listened to my repeated order to leave the room and he returned to the away team's location. By that time Lieutenant Shamor had accessed the computers and Mr. Vanroy had managed to repower the shuttle after using its power to activate the generators. Sivuk's findings: Biological material found on the exterior of the shuttle is a gelatinous substance that replicates itself. A forcefield was erected to prevent the spread from the science laboratory (where the specimens are stored and are growing) to other parts of the ship. Concerning the source of sensor interference, there is the possibility that the source is entirely natural. That would explain the tritoriam shielding. Perhaps the Romulans realized the danger in the interference and erected the shielding for that reason. Goad's findings: Another storm formed on the opposite side of the planet from the station The ship moved into geosynchronous orbit over the new storm to facilitate the gathering of data. An energy beam, visible to sensors within 5 km, was detected going into the developing storm, but the power frequency of the beam was undetectable and the source could not be pinpointed; it appeared to be randomly occurring. The storm mysteriously dissipated. Information from the probe indicated that the storms on the surface are artificial creations. Sensors confirmed that the storms are moving in a pattern that seems to be connected to the Romulan outpost's computer system. Travis Kroells: Is stable but unconscious in sick bay. Diagnosis: Andronesian Encephalitis
  5. Science Department Report 030126.5 Sivuk of Vulcan USS Raeant NCC 3345-G As the Raeant continues to investigate abandoned Romulan outpost Herio V, the data retrieved from the probe has led Ensign Goad to determine that the storms on the surface are artificial, yet we have yet to determine the cause or the reason. Fortunately the storms abated enough for the away team to return. However, Ensign Kroells is suffering from some malady, possibly contracted while on the surface. While there, Ensign Kroells stumbled upon a cryogenics area, and one viable cryounit, which he activated for revival. However, he was not able to stay to observe the life form when it emerged. He reported it as being of a gelatinous substance. Given Ensign Kroell's present condition, I can see the wisdom of Commander Ridire's order to evacuate; it is entirely possible that his malady was contracted from the life form inside the unit. Why the Romulans did not report these problems when the station was abandoned is also a mystery. It seems that we have generated more questions than answers during our investigation. These problems have led me to question if it is wise to continue. In the interest of science it is logical that we proceed, yet the danger to the crew dictates that we abandon the facility and post a warning beacon.
  6. Chief Science Officer's Report 03010.9 Sivuk of Vulcan USS Raeant NCC 3345-G The Raeant is currently in orbit of Herio V, on which is situated a Romulan outpost that was apparently abandoned quickly or shut down 25 standard years ago. We are in the process of assessing its viability as a Federation facility. The away team, led by Commander Ridire, is on the surface, trapped by a class V storm that increased mysteriously from class IV as soon as the away team entered the station. Lt Kroells is the science officer assigned to the away team and he is sending data directly to the science console on the bridge for immediate analysis. The structure we are investigating is classic Romulan design, strong enough to survive anything but a direct major bombardment. It is interesting that the Romulans would have built this research outpost so sturdily; such designs are usually reserved for military use. Perhaps the frequency and intensity of storms necessitated such a structure. Indeed, the storm the away team is presently enduring is beyond anything the outpost reported during its tenure. Also, we have noticed some unusual markings on the outside of the main building. The markings are circular, similar to those made by the lamprey common in Terran fresh water lakes. [The lamprey's round mouth has no jaws but can create strong suction. Adults of some species develop horny teeth. Such an adult attaches itself to other fishes by sucking with its mouth and clamping with its teeth. It feeds on its victims' blood and other body fluids.] The impressions on the exterior of the building are placed at the weakest parts, the seams and joints of the structure. Some damage is evident, but whether the damage was caused by suction or by violent storms remains to be determined. However, computer analysis suggests that the stress patterns on the exterior of the station are regular, consistant with patterns produced by something attempting to tear the station apart. Lt Kroells has detected biocontamination within the station, the source of which is approximately 100 meters northwest of the away team's present location. We are hopeful that the away team will not attempt to launch the shuttle, but will seek shelter from the storm in the innermost area of the station's main complex. That should give them the protection they need as well as taking them away from the area of biocontamination.
  7. Science Officer's Log 0211.03 Sivuk of Vulcan USS Raeant NCC 3345-G We seem to find ourselves in a precarious position at Freedom Station, caught between the station and three Mji battle-ready starships. The Poy Ambassador is aboard, and the Mji, who have changed their name from the Mji Alliance to the Mji Empire, are demanding immediate transport of the medicine and the Poy Ambassador. The Mji are agitated, but the Poy Ambassador seems relaxed, almost too much so. Either he is unaware of the danger or he knows something we do not. Of course, he may be doing what humans call "bluffing," but I find it hard to believe one would bluff in this situation. Ensign Kroells, our new science officer, continues to perform well. However, I must remind myself that humans require much more rest than we. Mr. Kroells stayed at his post nearly 36 standard hours, well beyond ordinary human endurance. I dismissed him to his quarters for rest and have advised Chief Science Officer Kirouff that Ensign Kroells has performed beyond his call of duty.
  8. Science Officer's Log, Stardate 0210.31 Sivuk of Vulcan USS Raeant NCC 3345-G While docked at Freedom Station, we made contact with both the Mji and the Poy, who seem to be affected by a strange malady, the cause of which has yet to be determined. Common complaints are headache, nausea, paranoia, and assorted aches and pains. Since I am not a medical officer, I have left the diagnosis and treatment of these people to Dr. Matthews and have confined myself to the scientific investigation of cause - which brings us full circle. Scans show no pathogens present in either the Poy or the Mji. A curious note: a number of discarded Ferengi uniforms were found aboard the USS Valiant with the Mji refugees. We have as yet had no opportunity to explore other factors that could create such an illness, being occupied with a potential threat to the ship. As we were towing the incapacitated USS Valiant away from Freedom Station, a Mji task force -- or what they deem to be a task force -- of three vessels has accosted the Raeant and demanded immediate transport of their Ambassador. It seems that they have had a change in government and are no longer known as the Mji Alliance, but are now known as the Mji Empire and are demanding immediate release of the "medicine" which is being held on Freedom Station. We have put the Raeant in defensive posture between the Mji force and Freedom Station, and most civilian ships have left the area. On a positive note, we have received another science officer, a human by the name of Travis Kroells. He is quite competent and I look forward to working with him.
  9. Duty Log, Stardate 02102.4 Sivuk of Vulcan, Science Officer USS Raeant NCC 3345-G After bringing the Mji refugees aboard Raeant, Captain Michaels requested I move among them to take tricorder readings, to "see if there were any clues." I suppose he meant clues as to the reason why they are refugees from their planet, and why they slammed their freighter into Freedom Station, both unanswered questions at the moment. Upon entering the cargo bay I found Lt. Shamor in charge and the Mji quite agitated. For a politically and technologically advanced people they were surprisingly disorganized, confused, and in very poor physical condition. In short, they showed behavior and physical condition similar to the Poy. There was no evidence of pathogenic evidence, so we must assume that the problem with both the Poy and the Mji is not pathogenic in nature. We did succeed in speaking to one Mji who seemed to be in a leadership position. Despite their desperate condition, the refugee leader insisted they should not allow their government to "trade away their advantage." They became agitated, demanding the medicine -- supposedly the headache powder we found on the station. Retreat from the bay was necessary and Dr. Matthews flooded the bay with a low concentration of anesthezine gas to calm them down. Analysis of the data is ongoing. I have sent my findings to Chief Science Officer Kirouff and to Dr. Matthews, with whom the science department is working closely to solve this most interesting puzzle.
  10. Duty Log, Stardate 500209.28 Sivuk of Vulcan Assistant Science Officer USS Raeant NCC 3345-G Dr. Matthews and I have been investigating what the Poy have described as "a neurological disorder" that has affected fifteen of their population. It would seem that their advanced technology would have given them an adequate diagnosis and treatment, but for some reason they are stymied and have asked us for assistance. To complicate the matter, the Mji have sent a quantity of medicine which is supposed to "cure" the malady, and both the Poy and the Mji are using an independent station in the Jera System, Freedom Station, as neutral territory. The station is run by a most inhospitable (if not hostile) person by the name of Manager Grep. His hostility towards the Federation is evident in his speech and his mannerisms, and, were I human, I would find him quite objectionable. Several points in the investigation have puzzled me. Chief among these is the result of long-range scans of the system and close scans of the station that show no pathogenic reason for the neurological disorder, which, according to the Poy, is debilitating. When Dr. Matthews and I examined the "medication" which the Mji have so conveniently produced, we found a white powder, similar to acetylsalacitic acid, commonly called aspirin. It is an anti-inflamatory still used in some cultures for the treatment of several ailments, including what the humans call "headaches." Our investigations aboard the station continue, but are hampered by the hostility of the station manager, which forces us to sample contents surreptitiously.
