  1. You need to switch from OpenJDK to the Sun java jre. Sun java 6. By default Ubuntu uses OpenJDK and icedtea as their Chromium/Chrome plugin. Instructions will depend on which Ubuntu you are running. (Lucid, Meerkat, etc..) After looking into it with another login oand chromium: OpenJDK will put you into the chat as "idle" through the boards that will stall to load. If you log into the website with the same credentials it will glitch and show the same name in duplicate or your actual login name with your display name. The issue is OpenJDK. BTW: Thanks for the overnight nuke on posting access since I was testing to locate the issue with Iasone's login that was not similar to display name. I actually find it amusing that you nuked that account when someone was just looking to help one of your members. Not much has changed I see. Love you too. :) "Chump don't want no help. Chump don't get no help." - Barbara Billingsley This also can apply to anyone having issues running Minecraft on certain *nix distros that default to OpenJDK. Sincerely, Kate Iasone P.S. Mobeus Chronox said "Internet is serious business." so I wish you good luck with your "serious business."
  2. Hi, When I log into an email I haven't checked in 6 months the only re-occurring spam messages I want to see, are not in regard to PMs that I've gotten about Russian Brides, Viagra, and whatever the hell else from PMs via this domain. <_< I only have you guys sent to my spam folder on the alt account. :D (I know... I know... STSF should be spam-fodder by default.) But that is only because people know that name, which was also getting the spam PMs. :P Kill it with fire. Nuke it from orbit. Make sure forums are up to date and someone/some bot is not exploiting to bypass the captcha... Thanks! :P
  3. That sir, is full of win. I don't see how the 'niche' of text based RPG couldn't be worked in by using whatever suppliment STO uses/may use/will use for the Supergroup feature in CoH/CoV. That way the needed and usually hardcore MMO players can have their way and the 'niche' (I hate using that term to differentiate.) text based players can still have the new interactive MMO features while still having control of their usual text based RPG within the game. For anyone unfamiliar with Cryptic/NCSoft's City of Heroes/Villains.... the Supergroup feature allows people to join a group, run missions together, use the supergroup base, and also has a 'private group chat' ability. Along with the owner of the SG being able to give admin or GM abilities for SG management. Since I've played a few Cryptic/NCSoft games with that feature, I don't see how or why something like that would be left out of STO in one form or another. So there is a possibility of that already being part of the game. Though I'd have to play the actual game (or test it) to see if there is/was a feature like that embedded into the game, in order to see how feasibly it could be applied to the general MMO environment. So until then I'll continue to lurk in silence over on those forums until I hear something that indicates one or the other. Most of all I like the SG or general group/guild features in MMO games for when I am soloing and do not feel like reading that crap or feel like paying attention to group agendas/iteneraries when I am not in the mood to play with others. (All of it. The good, bad, inbetween, and also getting to skip out on people who take RPing way too seriously like some do in MMOs. That is one of the major contributing factors as to why I hate WoW. Too many people getting waaay to into the characters to the point they lose all common sense.) The SG is perfect for people who gel together and enjoy playing together without having as much interference from other players and also having some aspect of group interaction without it being a free for all and/or greatly disturbing others who are not in the mood to play with the group. ::thinks:: Other than that I've got nothing. For full post de-railment, I might renew CoH/CoV.... I haven't played it in a few months.
  4. K, I have a few older teleport scripts that are functional as long as the area is within 300m. (I have others that are long range but I have not altered those or tested them.) Most of the scripts I have are free, and I can probably kick a few your way if you want or need them. Shoot me a PM here to let me know and I'll jump in SL. I believe they are on Merosi's avie but if not I know which one has them. I'm not sure if I have the one that plays sounds. I might on an older avie, I'll have to find the time to look at some point. There is also the vehicle script that some use to physically move any avatars that 'sit' on the object like a lift. Don't know if you have the room for that but that is also an option. (I am not sure if I still have a script like that. My inventory is spread out through a few avies and some of the scripts are old by about 4-5 years. Given the latest few 'breaks' in scripting by LL, I haven't tested what still works, and does not work.) I know I used to have something like that for one of the 'sets' I built but I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the object it was in. If I find it and you want it, I'll drop it in your inventory. If memory serves me, I also have the LCARS sets too if you need those. And I built a tricorder that opens/closes that can be used as an attachment or as decoration. (Though I might have to change the script slightly so it will open/close for non-owners. I don't remember it was a while ago.) Let me know and I will help out with what I am able to contribute.
  5. My guess is that the offical announcment will go out when the 'clock' hits 0. Generally Cryptic works with NCSoft for MMOs. If that is the case then generally people who have subscribed to other NCSoft/Cryptic games will get invites to a closed beta before they accept applications from people who have not played their subscription games. (Observational comment: Even with applications they tend to pick from people who have paid subscriptions - or have paid for their other games previously - over new applicants. They do accept people other than those in the mix, but generally I've only run into serious beta testers and subscribers during early beta testing.) But then again I'm only stating this from observation of how things usually go when it comes to Cryptic MMOs that I have played and/or beta tested. (CoH/CoV, Tabula Rasa, Lineage, Auto Assault.) Opinion only: Champions looks alot like City of Heroes incarnate, maybe with a different system. But now since this made me look at CoH/CoV, I think I will go kick some Rikti behind during the Invasion event again. ^.^
  6. That isn't to far off topic IMO. Hence the suggestion for those interested to look into the OpenSim Project where the age limits (TOS) would be set by the person running the server. No different than the TOS that applies in the chat and on these forums. That, and the appeal/lure from SL into an STSF run Open Sim environment would partially eliminate the 'niche' problem as far as simming differences go. ::shrug:: Amongst other SL main grid 'quirks' that SL users are aware of.
  7. Since it's been a few weeks since I last saw the plot. First off.. please... please if you have not done so already, remove the banlines/block on the land below. I got stuck then catapulted out due to banlines below the sky build when I went to drop to the ground. >.< You might want to drop a teleport link for anyone who is grokking below. The banlines didn't exactly say "WELCOME!" if you know what I mean. :) I'm not getting into the 'how it can be done' ramble again. Said it before and I have nothing new to contribute outside of I prefer to rent private simland. Moderate the plot with a security orb (With permissions for other group leaders to be able to do the same.) even remotely so I don't have to camp there. I've also built sets by stacking and skybuilding on relatively mid to small sized plots. (1500-2800 sq. m. and up) A trek sim generally focuses on internals of a ship. It is possible to make a good internal set without having to go 'all out' on the externals. Building the shell and general layout is not to difficult. It is the texturing and just how detailed one gets that makes a build difficult. Next time you are looking at other pre-fabs take a look at some of the 'shortcuts' people use to save on texturing and prims. There are rez scripts for placing specific linked parts or the builder can build and link it into sections for someone else to drop. There is also the OpenSim Project for anyone who feels like dabbling in running a server without the costs of tier. It is not as comprehensive as far as live SL goes, though it is a good alternative. They are working on scripting and a seperate asset server, so should anyone be interested they can look into that project. With that project are a few other benefits. You do take on the cost of running the server but you no longer have to pay tier. You also can regulate registrations and content. Also you can set it up to let users choose their own names. The caveat is that it is not SL and the connection may be slower depending upon who you have for a host. (Note: Most ISPs will probably not be happy if you use it 'live' 24 hours a day on your home connection. Check your ISP's TOS regarding home servers.) You also would be the admin(s) of that server which removes the whole 'dealing with everyone else on the SL grid' aspect. Though you would have to make your own content ranging from uniforms to builds. You'll also be able to get several people into your sim/server without worrying about hitting any limits. There is my .02 for someone to have... Save it, keep it, toss it at someone, I don't care. That can be done on another channel so it does not interfere with regular chat for other users. I sometimes go around dressed as the huge bear and use a similar repeater script on a different channel to make the 'bear' talk. NPCs can be done by script or by bots. Bots add to the user count on the grid so it might not be as advised as a scripted NPC that could be turned on and off whenand/or as needed. Though I don't see why some people who cannot commit to full-time simming on that game wouldn't be able to take a NPC role with the GM(s) blessing. Basic lsl is not too bad and there is also the scripting wiki for those looking to learn. There are also several free GPL scripts that can be modded and/or used.
  8. Do both of those statements end up with a result to the effect of something like this: If so.., then I'll have what they are drinking.
  9. Meh... Considering the content it really doesn't seem that bad in price. Star Trek the Tour - Offical Site If you're actually in Worcester, then Boston is listed. Hopefully they mean Boston proper. Sometimes people list "Boston" and it is out in Springfield. Which is no where near Boston. Supposedly the exhibit is 50,000 square feet. If it is in Boston (proper) then it'll probably be the BCEC, Hynes, or the Bayside Expo in Dorchester. Considering how broken up the Hynes is and the fact that there is pretty much no decent or massive amount of parking in that area... I guesstimate that it would probably BCEC or Bayside. Especially since they are both on major highway routes with a good amount of parking in addition to being T accessible. I can't rule out Bayside just because of the space and parking, but BCEC also has the hotels right there and it is not even 10 minutes to Downtown Crossing by foot and there is also Fan Pier. But with that comes congestion from all the tourists which leans a little more in the favor of it being held at the Bayside Expo. Anyone who knows Boston, specifically the BCEC area knows that on a normal day it is congested. I used to live and work in that area. It gets worse during conventions. Full disclosure: I don't like tourists. Being one, or having to deal with them. Though since this is Boston... It won't matter if there are a bunch of people walking around in Trek uniforms. We already have things like this happening at random: At Oak Grove station (Subway) and no, it was not a holiday. The odder thing about that day was that he did not get on the train around the 'tourist' historical spots. :D
  10. I used to use PE Explorer and a Hex editor for modding games back in the day. (Maxis Specific: SimTower, SimCity - Other than graphics. I think I used it once or twice on SimCopter but most of those files were not bundled within the exe.) I'm not sure which version of TheSims you're using or how different they are from each other... but there is SimPE for skinning. Read through and see if that is of any use to you. I always have the Nvidia DDS plugins as several games use DDS image files. It makes for easier searching. The Photoshop plug-ins will work in Paint Shop Pro when installed in the correct directory (If you only have PSP.) or if pointed to the correct PS directory. (If you have both PSP and PS.) You will need the plug-ins and the texture viewer to edit and export any DDS file created. The Thumbnail viewer is optional. I highly recommend the Thumbnail viewer as most games usually have several image files and they are usually not clearly named. If you are using TheSims2 and Bodyshop then try looking here. Overview: Mostly you need to export the default skin and then paint over it on another layer. Then export/save it as a DDS file and import it back into the game. Some games require a certain MIP value and the good tutorials will tell you what the MIP should be. That is pretty standard with most games with avatars that can be skinned or games that allow users to make custom maps/levels. (To keep it simple: The MIP is usually just a value that tells the rendering engine how to apply the texture to the avatar. Basically it maps out what part of the skin should go where on the avatar. Using the plug-in that number is entered before saving/exporting. All you need is the DDS plug-in to save and to know the numeric value when prompted. Nothing really too complex or convoluted that one needs to learn in order to skin.) I looked around at some of the base Sims skin templates. I wish the SL templates were that easy. :D
  11. I am not aware of any sites. I've seen the series ones but not TOS and TOS Movie versions. I might get hit for saying this: You could try to do it yourself. ::ducks:: At least that is what I do, or I ask someone who is better than I am who has made Trek skins if they happen to have any. A few people who do make trek skins/clothing usually have templates on the back burner that they have not released yet. Never hurts to ask. I usually give out drafts to certain people if they ask or tell me they are looking for something. I know a few others who sometimes will do the same or there is a detail that they needed to fix and they give out the old version. All depends on the game and how difficult it is to skin. Also how well you network within said communities. :D (I say 'possible to do it yourself' keeping in mind that most templates aren't as bad as this one. - That is the one I'm using lately and from the looks and experience of having to use it I have come to the conclusion that I must really like pain. That avatar mesh is horrible. There are also several uncontrollable 'bleed' areas in that mesh that keep driving me insane unless I slam those areas with detail that takes hours to do.)
  12. Ugh... I read that on Warcry. All I can say is: Oh god no. >.< So yeah... incoming partial rant (Start skipping here.): I like playing CoH/CoV on occasion, but it gets old fast. Initially I think I went maybe six months before dropping it. I will say to their credit in City of Heroes/City of Villains (Henceforth: CoH/CoV) they did an excellent job on launching "Invasion". Though once that became a lesser run random event (It runs when the Lady Grey Task Force is completed by anyone.) I was bored again once I got all the badges on my main. Though while that was going on the lag hell was *well* worth it. I didn't like Auto Assault when I was beta testing it for a myriad of reasons that are not 'beta' related, and I just don't like Lineage (I) but I think that is a genre dislike. Tabula Rasa is meh. It's not that bad, but nothing spectacular. The actual game play reminds me a lot of CoH/CoV game play in a CS or <insert any standard major MMO FPS game here, UT, CoD, Halo, etc...> theme. Tabula is supposedly their 'sci-fi' game, which I didn't think so as much. Seemed like an over glorified attempt at a FPS to me. If they actually are holding the license on STO then I am going to cringe a lot more. I would imagine that it will be typical MMO fare that you get in their other games with less intentional Role play aspect focus. :D People role play in the other games. Just that it is not the same. Your idea of possible "sim" would probably be a group that ran a set of missions and grinding. (Oh joy... Please pass the aspirin.) Instead of a Super-group base it'd be a group ship or a mission where players run as a fleet of ships/run as a ship, and not avatars. I can kinda see how they'd apply the standard game play one finds in their other games to STO and I'm not liking the prospect very much. Sure if it is still the same game play it'll keep me entertained for about three weeks, but after that I'll have no use for it. I'll end up back in SL on my land building another trek-like set just to get a fix. Since I've played a few NCSoft/Cryptic games: That kinda falls in line with any reports that STO is not a game for 'trekkies' whether the statement was made by Perpetual or not. :/ If they announce beta I'll reactivate CoH/CoV to try to get into the beta. Maybe. Don't get me wrong. I like Cryptic and NCSoft. NCSoft/Cryptic isn't that bad of a game company. (Except they keep finding new ways to nerf my scrapper. ¬.¬) I go back and play CoH/CoV when people who I am friends with play in there. I'm on a typical CoH/CoV hiatus at the moment. (Seemingly so is everyone else I used to play with in CoH/CoV.) I just hope they do something other than their standard game play with STO. Something that is a little more embracing to the role players out there. Especially figuring that after the initial hype dies down... those are the people in a niche that someone would want to keep alongside of the general MMO fan/player. For anyone who plays or has played an MMO you learn that if you hook up with a group, eventually they move onto the next best thing. They don't always go back either. (I'm fortunate as a lot of the people I've met usually go back to There or Second Life during the idle time between finding a new game.) If Cryptic makes the effort to more or less pamper and target the RPers as well as the typical MMO player, then people won't be as quick to jump ship for the next best thing and it would be a significant deviation from most MMORPGs in the fact that the platform would also specifically target and support Role Players who like to play outside of the pre-programmed game objectives that everyone has to meet. ::shrug:: But then again this is all theoretical and why I'm now not looking as forward to trying out STO as I once was. If it plays like CoH/CoV then I'd rather be playing CoH/CoV. At least my ensign would get a cape in CoH/CoV. Though... they did port ST-esque (Acura Shaped) cape broaches into CoH/CoV a long time ago. Heh. There were two or three the last time I looked. That I do remember from the last time I was playing CoH/CoV a few months ago. I have one character on Virtue using one of them on her cape. Next time I play I'll go to Ikon and get better screenshots of the Trek-esque broaches. But now I'm digressing. So I'll stop here. ;)
  13. Just another typical day on the Fung-Wah.
  14. Yeah, Meez is like IMVU. I went with IMVU a long time ago because I knew people from There and SL who went over to IMVU. :) I know that IMVU has some users who made trek sets. I just have no use for them other than screenshots, so I did not pick one up. In There all I did was went to Tyr and took screencaps since it has the Crystal Garden and is all night there. In SL there are quite a few locations with ST builds, which is where I took the screencaps. Those are pretty straight forward as all someone might want to do is add text, if that. (Exception is the Caitian avatar. That is just a texture/photo dropped on the inner face of a hollow cube. The Caitian I did buy a skin and some attachments for the claws, animated fangs, tail, whiskers, and ears. I created the nose out of sheer boredom. I also had scripted spinning lights, etc... like I said, I was bored.) Also from time to time for the 'more advanced' users, Content Paradise gives away older versions of Poser. Which if you keep an eye out you can also grab a copy of that. Usually it is Poser 5, I'm not sure if they are giving 6 away yet since I own 6. There is also DAZ3D for the more advanced users, which is free. ::Still has a copy of PSP6.:: :) That and TheGimp was what I used to learn before moving onto Photoshop. :) There is also the beta for befunky.com which will cartoonize photos. That is also another option. I got an invite right away. Outside of that, I did find the old trek outfits that used to be free in my older Second Life avie's inventory. If someone wants them, send me an offline IM. My SL name is in my profile here. I think they are TNG uniforms, I don't know what else. I have over 14,000 items on the other avie so it is hard to keep track. (Also be warned that they have much better versions out now. :D But you'll probably have to pay if you decide not to make one.)
