  1. A bit late, but happy birthday Star Trek! Star Trek is what brought me into sci-fi. I used to think it was all disturbing, until one day I actually sat down and watched TNG with my brother. He had to explain all the technobabble to me but I was hooked by the second episode. I fell in love with Star Trek because it made an idealized future seem like a realistic possibility. It showed me that other people are looking for some of the same changes that I am, and that they too believe it can be achieved. It could be written off as childish idealism, but even now, years later, Trek still keeps me from being cynical. That's invaluable. A couple fun fan videos, in case I haven't posted them before. I especially like the DS9 one. DS9 Video Anniversary Tribute
  2. "Engineering Small Miracles" Joint Log by Kairi, Prell, and Dielle Prell stared at the Iconian Device, not paying attention to anyone or anything. He remained silent for several minutes, oblivious to the engineers passing behind him. Walking into the room, Kairi came up behind him and leaned over his shoulder. She handed him a cup of coffee. "Anything yet?" He jumped, almost knocking over the coffee. "Oh....ummm, well yes. We've found the power source; it's still active." He pointed to the bottom, which was faintly glowing orange. She began rubbing his back to get him to calm down as she looked at the device. "The higher-ups will be happy it's still alive then." She thought for a minute as she continued to rub. "Hmm...look there. It looks like a part would belong there." He followed her finger to a panel, behind which was an empty space. "Yes, it seems that way....but we can't reverse engineer what's missing if we don't know what this does..." He stood up and walked around it. As if on cue, Dielle's friendly face appeared in the doorway. "Need some help?" She hadn't been able to contain her curiosity and had finally finished all the other menial tasks Prell had assigned her. Kairi turned and smiled. "We could always use another hand." Prell looked over and nodded. "We do need some help. What the hell does this thing do? It's obviously a weapon of some sort." "Hmm.." Kairi leaned on the table and began examining the device more carefully. As Dielle approached it, she inspected it from several different angles aided by her tricorder. "The power size does indicate it's probably a weapon," she said, nodding. "But look at this. "If this is right, it's meant to affect changes on a molecular level. Highly sophisticated." Dee looked over at Prell. "Who made this, anyway?" Javin looked up. "We think it might be Iconian. You said on a molecular level? How so?" "I think it disrupts various molecular bonds, breaking down the cohesion instantaneously." She studied the device once more. "But from the size of it, it doesn't seem like it would be very efficient to use on individuals. Maybe they hadn't perfected it." Kairi leaned in further. "If this thing does what you say, then where is the focusing array?" Dee sat back. "Maybe that's what's missing. If so, we won't be able to operate it until we find a replacement." Prell studied the empty chamber. "How can we make one if we don't know the intended target?" "We could take what we have so far and make some simulations. That way we can experiment with different arrays." Kairi stood up . He nodded. "Like the Sonic Disruptor.... wait." Kairi looked up. "Like the Sonic Disruptor.....could this be almost the same as it?" "Destabilization of molecular cohesion, like it did." Prell continued. Dielle glanced back and forth at the two of them. "Sonic disruptor? Targets sound waves or something?" Her face displayed her obvious confusion. Kairi thought. "It's possible they are roughly the same. Maybe we weren't the first to discover this device, and the sonic disruptor is a copy of sorts." Noticing her confusion, Kairi took Dee by the hand and led her to a console. She then quickly brought up the specs of the sonic disruptor for her to study. "It's one of our little toys." "Thanks." Dee flashed Kairi a smile and perused the data from the library. At least someone intended to keep her in the loop. Prell nodded his confirmation. "We had it onboard for some time. It used very high frequency to bombard targets out of their relative positions. This device could do somewhat the same couldn't it? Except instead of pushing objects away, it would crumble the foundations of elements." Kairi nodded. "Looks that way. Maybe one of the lenses we made for the disruptor could work here. It'd probably need to be modified first." Dee turned around to face them and the device. "It might work, but it'd take a lot of modifications. If the targeting array's off, it'll be disastrous. We need to make sure the pulse is focused." She studied it for a few more minutes. "The range on this is incredible." Prell nodded again. "Let's give it a run in the simulations; that'll help us find the right lens." Kairi sat down next to Dee at the console. With a few taps she began uploading a simulation. Dee leaned over, interested. "At least we don't have to come up with a power supply. Do we know what sort of reserves this thing has? How much we can get out of it?" Prell looked back at the supply. "Well, we don't know how long this thing has been down on the planet. It could last a very long time. A fusion reactor perhaps?" "Pretty much self-sustaining then. That's incredible; I've never even heard of anything close to it." Prell looked at Kairi and Dielle. "All right, let's get this thing up and running. Kairi, you start work on the lens focuser while Dielle starts running the simulations. Let's not let any science nerds in on this." Kairi nodded as she began her work. "We'll have this done before they even know what's going on." Dee smiled at him. "Concerned they'll upstage you?" There was no question of anyone upstaging her. Prell smirked. "No, I just wanna have something to rub in their collective faces." "That," Dee said, leaning back in her chair, "is something that can be arranged."
  3. I haven't heard anything about that possibility. Maybe in the far future? I know they've slashed the prices a bit on TNG and DS9 seasons 1-5. They're still quite expensive at somewhere around $50-$55, but it puts it out of the unthinkable range for me.
  4. ::clicks "yes" to all three:: That's me. I use Trillian so I've got IDs on each of them, but I really prefer AIM over MSN. The MSN connection is sorta buggy for me and drops a lot more easily.
  5. I don't think they have anything better, but I'm sure the show was getting very costly. They have to pay the actors more as the seasons go on, and they probably spent a ton of money to get RDA back. I'll miss it, but I'd be happy if they ended it with a movie. I think that would be the best really. ::runs off to console herself with Shep::
  6. Raiya, and "hell yes!" Good writing all around folks. Glad to see it finished, Images. Now get out there and find a way to incorporate them each into your roleplaying!
  7. That sounds terrific, but it sounds like it might be a lot of work in terms of plotlines and all. It's not that someone can't pull it off, but I think it would have to be a lot more organized and detail oriented. I like the idea of dealings with the Orion Syndicate and all, or about raising ethical questions. It would be nice to have some morally ambiguous situations that really make players think and figure out what their characters would do. I've always been interested in the idea of a sim that moves away from Starfleet or anything remotely militaristic. I'm interested in seeing what life's like for everyone else. The easiest thought would be some sort of merchant freighter type vessel, but I think there's a lot of room for creativity.
  8. ::carries out a cake and sets it in front of Aaron:: Make a wish! Happy Birthday! :D
  9. "Engineering Manipulations" Starring James Kroells & Dielle Toren James ran over the PADD one last time, the dim glow of his half lit office lights making it difficult. He paused, and turned to his desk screen, forgetting that that too was broken. He let out a small sigh, wondering when that damned Trill would get around to doing some actual work. The doors to the science lab opened, Dielle strolling casually inside. "Someone complained about the lights in here again?" She approached his office, looking up at the faulty lights overhead. His eyes however, did not leave the Risan standing in front of him. He carefully scanned her curves as he formed his next sentence. "Indeed. I wouldn't be surprised to find Prell at a EPS relay, flipping switches and giggling like a school girl." She ignored his gaze, walking directly to a section of the wall and kneeling down to pry it open. The door to his office shut closed behind her. "Funny, he suggested that you simply couldn't handle the equipment in here properly. Always trying to use more power than you have." He continued to sit at his desk, his eyes tracing down her back as she leaned over. "That man, or is it the thing inside of him, doesn't know its place." Dielle reached into the panel, pulling out a blown circuit. The lights went out in the lab entirely. "Sometimes people need to be shown their place." She turned around, facing him in the dark. He smirked, and moved over to her, only the slightest bits of light shining through his heavily tinted office windows. "Smart girl." She stood up, wondering just how smart she was. Had it been smart to leave the relative safety of Risa? Had it been smart to confront Prell and Kairi? "I need to give it a minute to cool down before I replace it with new circuitry," she explained. He sat down on top of his desk, gazing over her again. "Well, what do you usually do to pass the time while...your circuitry cools?" Dielle moved to him slowly. "Prell sends me on yet another mundane assignment. He doesn't seem to realize that my skills extend to ... other areas as well." She looked him over casually. Definitely an improvement from the ambassadors and other officials on Risa. They were often older, had let themselves relax a bit too much on the planet. She looked at the man standing in front of her and realized that her career options suddenly seemed much more attractive. He gave her a small smirk, while gracefully licking his lips. "And what other areas do you specialize in?" She halted, merely inches from him. "Are you asking for a description or a demonstration?" She smiled slowly. He tried to hide his grin from her unsuccessfully, instead only managing to change it into a dirty smirk. "I suppose a demonstration would be best for me to truly understand." Her voice dropped to a whisper. "I'm sure something could be arranged," she murmured, leaning into him. Her lips brushed his, testing him. He grinned for a second, before returning his lips to hers, opening up her mouth while his hands roamed her back. Dielle let him explore her for a few brief moments before pulling away abruptly. "I'm sure it's cooled down by now." She backed away from him, grinning, as she returned to the panel in the wall. He smirked, and watched her walk back to her circuits, enjoying the game. He paused, wondering if this was her style, or if today was a special day. She worked quickly, feeling his eyes on her once more. The lights flickered for a moment, then came on in full force as she closed the panel. "Is my work here done, or was there something else?" "Well now..." He smirked, and walked over to her. "I believe that is entirely up to you." "I'm sure the Chief's already got another job lined up for me in Engineering." She made no effort to reach for her engineering kit, but instead continued to lean against the wall. He kicked her kit away, walking closer to her. "He doesn't know exactly how much time it took you to fix ...everything." "True." Dielle considered. Surely there were benefits to working overtime. And it was about time someone appreciated her for something besides her engineering skills. Kairi was too wrapped up in other things. And Prell wouldn't even give her a second look. James' hand brushed along her side, as he took in her scent. "Well then, what did you have in mind?" Dielle curved her body, molding herself to his touch. "I'm open to suggestions." She reached up, kissing him again. He returned the kiss, his hands roaming again, memorizing her features. She broke away for a moment, glancing at the closed door. Being a chief definitely had its privileges. And perhaps being with one did as well. He interrupted her thoughts as his hands drew her back to him, and she realized she had no desire to resist.
  10. "Pleasure Before Business, Part II" Starring Kairi, Prell, and Dielle Prell glared at Dielle, then looked to Kairi. She laughed. "What makes you think we are freedom fighters?" Dee allowed herself a smile at Kairi's attempted dodge. The fact that she called them "freedom fighters" was enough. "All that time off you gave me allowed me to do my homework. I'm willing to bet you are not who you appear to be. In fact, I placed that bet by coming here tonight." Kairi fixed her hair a little, covering her ears. She then turned to fix another drink. Prell continued to study Dielle. "So you are something you don't appear to be as well..." "I'm Risan. Check me if you'd like." She decided not to hold back. She had checked the surveillance on Prell's quarters herself. "Are you really worried I'd sell you out? Do you know what they've done to my people? What they've done to me?" Dee took a moment to compose herself, regaining her usual demeanor. "It's an offer. You don't have to take it." Kairi turned to give Prell a "what now?" look. He leaned forward, studying Dielle. "You're saying there's a Risan Resistance?" She laughed lightly. "Nothing that organized. But we're not just pretty faces." Prell rubbed his forehead. "I think I need a drink now, Kairi." Kairi moved over to sit on the bed, handing him the rest of her drink. "Why should we believe you?" "Because I'm a bigger risk if you don't." He smirked as he took a sip. "Blackmail." Kairi remained unconvinced. "So if you say anything, you have no proof. We'd just be put on tight surveillance for a while. No big deal." She smiled. "Not blackmail, facts. And the fact is, you can't afford to be put on surveillance. You can't lose that time or those resources. You also don't know who my connections are and you don't know what I've already recorded." Dielle leaned forward. "Give me an assignment. I'll show you what I can do." Kairi turn to Prell. "What do you think?" He considered Dielle for a bit. "It appears she knows of my security network. I wonder if she can find a way around the electronic buffer around Robair's room." Kairi pondered his suggestion. "Hmm ...That sounds like a reasonable task." She smiled at Dielle. "Think you can handle it?" "Consider it done." Dee smiled easily at both of them, hoping she looked convincing enough. Prell grinned. "Get to it then—I want to know what he gets up to tonight when I come in to work tomorrow morning." Kairi mirrored his grin, looking at the two of them. "It's settled then. Welcome to the group, I guess." "And here I was, thinking that once we had gotten done with business, we could get to pleasure." Dielle gave them a wistful look as she moved off the bed. "I'll have a report for you tomorrow morning then, sir." She gave Kairi one last smile before exiting through the door. "You can welcome me later." "And Dielle?" Prell called out as the doors closed. She paused. "Yes, chief?" "No sneaky peeky when you leave us here..." Kairi gave Prell a quick kiss and rushed out the door after Dielle. She grabbed Dielle, pulling her close. "Just a moment." Dee didn't resist. "Something else you wanted?" Kairi smiled as she leaned in. "You owe me after your little interruption." Without reserve, she looked up at Kairi, moving in and kissing her softly. She knew Prell was probably watching. The thought appealed to her Prell was indeed watching on his monitor... Kairi gently returned the kiss, then pulled away smiling. "That'll have to do for now. You have work to do." "Find me later." Dee flashed her a grin and then disappeared quickly down the hallway before anyone else discovered them. Kairi watched as Dee left, then walked back into Prell's room smiling, knowing full well he had been watching. "Well, did you enjoy that?" He smirked. "Was it as good as it looked?" She grinned as she moved back to the bed. "Yes it was." She sat back behind Prell and began to rub his back. "You look a little tense now. How about some Vulcan pressure point?" "And miss the fun? I think not. Besides, you need to be punished." She giggled. "And just how do you intend to punish me?" He turned and looked into her eyes. "The same as before—except you'll be cleaning my walls as well."
  11. "Pleasure Before Business, Part I" Starring Kairi, Prell, and Dielle Kairi sat casually sitting on Prell's desk, awaiting his return. She wasn't disappointed. He walked into Main Engineering a few moments later, after his episode with DeChevel and the new Holodeck maid Robair. Crossing to his office, he waited for the door to close behind him. A hand slipped through the door, causing it to pause and then open again. "Sir, I've been hoping to speak with you." Dielle's voice was pleasant, a contrast to those filtering through from Engineering. Scowling at Kairi, he turned around. "Yes, Ms. Toren?" She handed him a PADD. "I think you could find me something more suited to my abilities. These assignments hardly reflect my skills." He looked at the PADD, noting the rather long list of skills, most prominently her raw terminal interface ones. He gave a look to Kairi. "I'll review these overnight. Why don't you take the rest of the day off?" The slightest frown passed over Dielle's face before it brightened again. "Of course, sir, thank you. I know just how to spend the extra time." She smiled sweetly at both of them before exiting the room. Kairi smiled as the door closed, leaving her alone with Prell. "Miss me?" He made sure the maglocks were sealed. "I sure did babe." She scooted to the edge of the desk and Prell smoothed back her hair behind her ears, pinching the pointy tips in the process. "DeChevel took a big risk today..." Kairi brought a finger up to his lips. "Ah ah...You know my rule. Pleasure comes before work." He scowled. "Only you could be so … energetic … while any second we could be found out." She giggled a little before moving in for a kiss. Moving closer to his ear, she whispered softly. "Don't forget the walls have eyes and ears." He kissed her up her neck until he reached her ear. "Shall we relocate to somewhere we'll be undisturbed?" Kairi wrapped her arms around the back of his neck. "Your place or mine?" "I didn't think I'd be invited to yours again after what we did two nights ago..." She laughs. "It took a long time cleaning those walls. Maybe your place is best." Grinning, he reached over to his monitor and tapped a few buttons before they shimmered away. As they reappeared in Prell's room, Kairi turned and grinned. "I knew there was a reason I liked you. You're so secretive." He pushed her onto the bed and she landed giggling. "Am I?" he asked. Prell jumped in next to her, stroking her nose. "So this Dielle girl?" Kairi smiled as she rubbed his ear lobe. "I like her." He grinned. " I know you too well, babe—where'd you go with her when you left me alone with Robair and DeChevel?" "I took her for a little ...walk to get to know her more. I think she may be very useful to the cause." Prell quirked an eyebrow. "I assume you've read her file then?" He teased a finger under the top of Kairi's uniform. She nodded. "That's why I think she'd be perfect. But enough of that ..." She shifted herself on top of Prell and was beginning to remove her uniform top when the door chimed once, abruptly spoiling the moment. Prell swore. Kairi frowned and paused. "Expecting anyone?" "Unless it's Robair's henchmen coming after me again, no. Computer - security feeds Alpha Alpha Uno." A monitor flipped out from the bedside table, showing his doorway. Dielle's face appeared, looking directly into the feed. She smiled into the supposedly hidden camera. Kairi slowly hopped off the bed, frowning. "You better get it." Javin swore again. "Mother of..." "Come!" As the doors parted, Dielle stepped in, looking at the two of them. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything," she said, knowing for a fact that she was. He hid his scowl. "Your file doesn't lie, does it Midshipman?" Kairi moved across the room to get a drink, giving a half smile to Dielle. Dielle caught Kairi's smile, then focused on Prell. "I told you I was good." Prell simply smirked in return. Kairi turned after pouring a drink. "So what brings you here at this particular moment?" Dielle eyed her appreciatively. "I concluded my assessment of your surveillance devices on board the ship, and decided you could definitely use me. You aren't hiding your tracks very well. Either of you." Prell felt his symbiont give a small jump, and he glanced at Kairi. "Surveillance devices?" Kairi smirked, obviously impressed. She took a sip of her drink. "And what tracks might we be hiding?" "Surely I don't have to recite the list to you?" Dielle dropped her smile for a moment and looked at them both. "Everyone knows the two of you are in bed together. You could use someone a bit more ... ambiguous." She moved to the bed slowly, uninvited. "Though not everything needs to be kept ambiguous in private." Prell smirked again. "Everyone also knows the feline and our new Maid are in bed together." Kairi smiled as she put her drink down and eyed Prell. "See, I told you I liked her." He looked back at her. "So you did. Tell me, Dielle—what have Kairi and I gotten ourselves into?" Dee looked at them evenly, her gaze lingering on the tips of Kairi's ears. "I know resistance fighters when I see them." (to be continued)

  14. Happy Birthday! Hope you have fun, whatever you have planned. :)
  15. I love writing joint logs because I think it often improves my writing. I prefer to alternate writing in prose over AIM, and then cleaning it up later in edits. If using IM isn't possible, I like emailing pieces back and forth. As for planning it out ahead of time, it really just depends. Sometimes it's fun to just do something spur of the moment, and other times I like to have a lot of background going in, so we can develop something more detailed.
