  1. << OOC: This took place before the meeting between the Morningstar crew and the Surma >> President Hafin Jian sat at his desk. Soon, he would be going to the third most important meeting of his life, the meeting with Cmdr. Corizon of the United Federation of Planets. Only a few years ago, he was the captain on an advanced Surma warp capable explorer ship. It was among the first of their ships ever to leave their solar system. It was also their first encounter with alien beings, a chance meeting in outer space. He and his crew came home with maps, star charts, stories, and a whole new perspective on the universe. And, it was that meeting that catapulted the "heroic" captain into a successful run for the highest political office. Now, they had a planned meeting with a representative of this great, peaceful Federation. To say that Jian was nervous was the understatement of the century. But, he surely wasn't going to show it to anyone. It was a skill honed in the service, one that was as sure to help him in the electoral process as it does in space. An aide walked in. "Mr. President, there are still two unresolved matters related to the Federation visit. Gen. Killion wants to who will be leading the tour of the military facilities." "The military? Have Fylan show them around." It was the politically expedient thing to do. Defense Minister Fylan was a compromise choice that helped hold together the ruling coalition government. The aide sneered questioningly. "The general was probably expecting the job himself." The president responded: "Fylan's a moron, but I don't think we have a choice. Next..." "The matter of the scientists. We had over a hundred twenty applications from different facilities that wanted to present their work to the Federation. We've narrowed it down to five." "Which ones?" The aide read off the list: "The computer scientists, the biologists,... " "No, they won't do. From what I hear, these Federation-folk are far ahead of us technologically and scientifically. They've been in space for centuries. We're going to be asking them for a partnership, and, frankly, that means a lot of help. Maybe now's not the time to give them an idea of just how much we're going to ask. Is there anything we can show them that they probably don't already know?" "Well, there's the archaelogical site at the Mt. Tatara Range on the southern continent. Dr. Jehal Teraz says they've just uncovered some very exciting finds." "Sounds good. Tell me more." "They're excavating what they think was a very early terrace farming settlement in the heights of the mountain range. They haven't been able to date the site conclusively yet, but, all evidence seems to say that it's at least a couple of thousand years old, so, it may be one of the earliest cities on the planet. The mountain is less than a third excavated. The scientists think they may be able to do some joint excavations with the Federation scientists, if they're so inclined. "Well, It's our history, so, they'll be totally unfamiliar with it. Tell Jehal to prepare for the Federation guests' arrival." The aide left the office to give the results to the expectant scientists. Soon after, another aide walked in. "The Defense Ministry reports that the Federation ship has entered the system. The commander will be ready to meet with you as soon as they enter orbit." Jian quickly gave an order. "Have them prep a shuttle." "Sir, the starship's operations manager asked for coordinates to 'beam you up'" The president paused for a moment. "If that's what I think it is, they've got to be kidding."
