  1. So, basically you mean...don't install Vista, EVER!
  2. Yeah there's nothing like boring your friends to death with reviews about bad movies. I do it all the time. ;)
  3. I don't know the answer but being a wiseguy I have a question...shouldn't it be fog horns?
  4. We could make it our new greeting...you know instead of simply nodding.
  5. ::looks at Kansas:: :D You can be here too much!?! Actually I'm just posting here to catch up with you Jones and get my 500th post :)
  6. Nick was standing at the door of what used to be his quarters on Aegis. He took a few cautious steps forward trying not to trip on the debris that was littering the floor. He looked around. The room was completely dark. He let his wrist-light wander over the bulkheads and the scorch marks that covered them. The remains of the few pieces of furniture that were still discernible in the chaos were equally covered in a black residue. The viewports were blackend. The signs of the fire were unmistakable. Slowly making his way to where his desk used to stand, Nick tried hard not to imagine what would have happened to him had he been here at the time of the fire. He knelt down next to what was left of his desk and tried to find some of his more valuable personal items. After a few moments, however, Nick realized that he wouldn't be able to find anything here. He sighed. Nick got up and walked over to the doors to his bedroom almost tripping over a piece of debris. He tried to open the doors manually but they were jammed. It took quite some effort to prise them open. By the time he had managed to open them just enough so he could squeeze through Nick was covered in sweat, grime and the black residue left by the fire on every single surface. When he had finally made his way into his bedroom Nick gave up all hopes of finding anything in there though the fire had not extended to this room. A look toward the viewport revealed a gaping hole that was now sealed by a forcefield. His personal belongings and bedsheets were now probably floating in the vacuum of space. Somehow the thought made Nick smile. He hoped noone would ever have the pleasure coming across his laundry. He wiped the sweat off his face with his right sleeve and decided that trying to find anything in here was a waste of time. Nick turned around and returned to the main room of his quarters. For a few minutes he went on searching the debis but it was hopeless. The few things that had not been consumed by the fire were blackened and hardly recognizable. Shaking his head he left his quarters. It was time to start all over again and focus on the future instead of the past.
  7. You have to remember that several sims are not set in the same timeframe. Agincourt for example is set in the past Voyager era and the Hood is our TOS sim. Oh, and sending subspace messages from the Talon to a Starfleet vessel and vice versa is probably not a good idea either :D .
  8. ::scratches head:: I'm with Jones there.... guess I should take a few minutes to check some of this out. ::goes back to his slab of stone, hammer and chisel:: Gotta finish this letter to my mum. :D
  9. I think for the first time in about 6 years I had a calm and relaxed Christmas. The only thing that was missing was snow and we're getting it now...exatlc 12 hours before I'm going to leave... I bet my right arm that all trains will have at leats a 1 hour delay and I'll get home around midnight tomorrow which means I'll have to walk toe 5 kilometers from the station. (gotta remember to buy new gloves before I leave) I got a book and a ticket to a concert and I spent some quality time with my family. Since I get to see them only once or twice a year that's always the important part about Christmas.
  10. Nick was sitting on a crate in the Lewis' cargo bay. He had requested some equipment from the CMO and he had gotten more than he expected. Right now he was ticking off items on a PADD. It looked like the temporary sickbay on...well whatever there was out there, would be well stocked. Looking up from his PADD, Nick noticed that almost the whole medical staff he had assembled for the temporary assignment was busy in the cargo bay. He just wished that either Commander Hawke or the Captain would provide him with a bit more information. He sighed. It seemed like they would have to find out the details for themselves. As he got up and wondered what he should do next Nick realized he hadn't eaten anything since that morning. Before going to the mess hall, however, Nick wanted to drop by his quarters and make sure he had packed everything he needed. Fifteen minutes later a small bag was lying next to the doors of Nick's quarters. He knew he wouldn't need much, just a few uniforms and a couple of personal items. The rest would have to wait until the station was rebuilt. Nick looked around the small place to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything. He smiled. He couldn't really say he was very sorry to leave the Lewis. Granted, everyone had been nice. The Lewis' crew had done their best to accomodate everyone from Aegis but it just wasn't the same. “I just don't belong here.” On that note Nick turned around and left the room, ready to face any challenges that lay out there.
  11. Happy Birthday!
  12. Happy Birthday!
  13. Hmm...actually, what's keeping us from getting together? How many Europeans are there on here; three, four? I mean it's not like we need to accomodate a lot of people. Let's go take over France or something.
  14. Hey folks, My brother is writing a term paper and he wants to analyze the different accents spoken in North America. So, he actually needs speech samples. I thought that maybe I'd find some people who are willing to help among you. Here's how it would work. I would send you an e-mail with a text and a few additional sentences that I would ask you to record and send back to me. The data would be treated highly confidentially, of course. There's no need for anyone to give me their name, exact age or location. All I would need are the following details. Age: 10-20 years / 20-40 years / 40-60 years / above 60 Sex Province/State you live in Province/State you where you went to elementary school The files will be saved without mentioning your nickname or e-mail address and they will only be used for this term paper. There is no intention for the whole thing to be published in any way. The only ones who would hear the files are my brother, his linguistics professor and I. In case you are interested just send me an e-mail or a pm and I'll be glad to answer any question you might have about this.
  15. I'm still looking for North Americans who'd be willing to give me a speech sample. So far I've got 5 volunteers. It would be nice if maybe 5 more could take a few minutes to record a short text (provided by me). I especially need people from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, New England and, of course, Canadians. (Actually everything north of Kentucky would be cool.) You should be native speakers, though. In case you are interested you can still send me a pm or an e-mail with questions. I'll do my best to answer them.
  16. I'm in images. I mean I don't even have enough relatives to sell in order to pay for a trip to Vegas but anywhere in Britain is actually feasible. Just make sure we go to a place where I can get some good Guinness.
  17. Ah Christmas...the time of year when you just can't get away from your family. :P Seriously, I'm looking forward to spending a whole week at my mum's just eating and lying on the sofa watching all those bad movies they show on TV around Christmas. As for presents, I hope I'll get tickets for a concert I've wanted to go to ever since I was 9 years old.
  18. I definitely agree. I've read Homecoming and Farther Shore and really enjoyed reading both of them. As I said, I don't really have a choice when it comes to Star Trek novels. I have to read those I manage to get my hands on. So, I get to read a bit of pretty much everything.
  19. In the case of a cell membrane it's simply charges and the size of particles that prevents them from getting in or out. If I remeber correctly, however, you can fire through the shields as if they were not there if you know the shield frequency of a ship. So, if you set your phasers to the right frequency you'd be able to fire through your own ships' shields while an enemy ship, not knowing the frequency, would not be able to penetrate them. I'm not 100% sure whether my explanation is right but to me it sure sounds like a good one. :D
  20. I only started reading the novels about a year ago. That was 'cos I was at my dad's and I couldn't bring enough books for the three months that I stayed with him. So, he gave me some of his books and one of them was a Star Trek novel (TOS era and translated into German). I still wonder how I managed to read the whole thing because the translation was so bad that I sometimes had to translate things back into English to make sense of a sentence. Then I decided to buy me some more novels, in English this time to see whether it was really just the translation or whether the novels were just generally badly written. I found that most of the books I've read are actually quite good. So, I spent 100+ bucks on Star Trek novels. That resulted in a little problem because they wouldn't fit into my (huge) backpack. Anyway, since then I've found out that it is extremely difficult to get Star Trek novels over here and it's almost impossible to get them in English :D . I guess that's just another good reason to move. My favourites were some of the Voyager novels. I've also read some TNG and TOS era ones but overall (style, storyline etc.) I must say that I liked the Voyager ones best. I have to admit though that I'm a fussy reader and I hardly ever find anything that I really like.
  21. Thanks, mate!
  22. ::quickly hands Seiben another 'l' :: Welcome to STSF Rason. Hope to be simming with you one of these days.
  23. Now I feel old... I can definitely remember one or two of those but I was already too old for most of what you mentioned there. But I actually still do miss the times when it was worth getting up early on weekends to watch the good cartoons.
  24. Naw...we're just VERY early for her next birthday. Happy Birthday Andrea!
  25. Great work...though I'm still waiting for the day you get to spell my name correctly :(
