  3. Happy Birthday Tach. When can I expect to be run over by a particle whenever I come to wherever you live?
  4. Nick was still sitting behind the desk looking at his chief. He started smiling. "Back at medical school, I had a lecture about the history of psychiatrics. If ever you feel the need to impress the necessity of resting on anyone, feel free to ask me for suggestions. We even tried some of the strapping methods on each other." The smile turned into a grin. "Anyway, welcome to your new home. I hope you like it so far," Nick added, the grin on his face fading. DJ shook her head and smiled ruefully. "So far, so good." she replied earnestly. "It isn't quite what I expected." She paused for a moment and shrugged her shoulders. "But I didn't know what to expect to begin with. I think I've gotten off to a pretty good start. There have been only two big surprises since I arrived so that's not too bad." The new CMO didn't care to answer any questions regarding her two big surprises so she quickly changed the conversation to a topic she knew Dr. Lepage would be interested in. Nick's expression remained unchanged even though he only just managed not to smile. Obviously Dr. McKinny had no desire pursuing the subject of her "two surprises" and he decided not to push. Instead he waited for the chief to choose a topic. "By the way," continued DJ. "As I mentioned to you earlier, I haven't had a chance to completely review the documents you submitted regarding the Rixian Plague." She looked into Nick's eyes and saw that his interest was piqued. "But from what I was able to glean from my initial review, I am very impressed by how much you and the team accomplished in such a short period of time...especially when you consider the circumstances. It's difficult to concentrate on research when you've been attacked and your facilities are badly damaged or destroyed." "Thank you Lieutenant, "Nick said a bit embarrassed by the unexpected praise, suddenly seeming immensely interested in his hands resting on the desk. He decided to completely ignore the remarks about the attack since this was a subject Nick did not want to discuss. At least not now. "To be honest, I was a bit surprised how far we got with the research. The most difficult aspect was maybe that we did not have a patient to do a proper anamnesis. Only when it came to finally trying out the medication did one member of the delegation admit she was affected by the disease so we could actually check for side effects. Of course this one patient was not enough to draw any conclusions and further clinical studies will have to be made on their homeworld but the results were promising." He paused seeming lost in thoughts. The Plague was something that really intrigued Lepage and the way he talked about it gave away that he was more than mildly interested. He looked up into DJ's eyes. "One thing I would also like to find out is why it only affected Rixians and why there was this sudden outbreak. I am almost convinced that this is the key to finding a cure." DJ listened intently and then hesitated a moment before speaking. She finally fixed her gaze on young Dr. Lepage and smiled. "I'll speak to the Captain and the Chief Science Officer. I would very much like to see this team reassembled and the research continued. From what little I've read, if you could develop a cure, the political ramifications on this alien world would be huge. But even more importantly, you could very well be responsible for saving an entire species from extinction." Hearing these words Lepage frowned. He had always known that without a cure the Rixians would not survive as a species but until now, he had not really realized what exactly that meant. "Sounds rather intimidating when you think about it, Doctor, doesn't it? The worst thing probably is that even though we have already come considerably far in our efforts no one can say if we'll be successful. It might just as well be that our final conclusion will be that there is no cure. At least none we can find with our available technology. I am quite aware that I am probably not telling you anything you don't know yet. So I appreciate your support even more." McKinny's eyes twinkled as she cocked her head to one side and grinned. "I hope you were nice to Lieutenant Raumuk. I'm sure she'll have a lot to say about her department's involvement with this project." Nick chuckled. "I tried my best to make her feel comfortable." He bowed his head. "Always eager to please. Sounds like a good motto for sickbay. Even though we would have to disappoint people pretty often." "I'm sure you made a good impression," quipped DJ lightly. "I'll finish reading your report and contact the Lieutenant. Hopefully, she'll be as enthused about this challenge as I am." The CMO folded her arms in front of her, her PADD hanging limply from her right hand. "I wonder if there is any way to contact the Rixians?" she asked, frowning slightly. "Especially the one who volunteered to act as a guinea pig. It would be a tremendous help if we had regular updates on the effectivness of the drug." DJ shook her head and forced her thoughts back to the here and now. "I'll talk to Captain Ayers about that. He may be able to pull a few strings and arrange for communications between their medical establishment and the research team here on Aegis." She glanced at the PADD for a moment before continuing. "In the meantime, don't beat up on yourself for not finding a cure. There were serious time constraints not to mention an attack on the station." DJ again looked at Nick. "It is interesting that only Rixians are susceptible to this disease. That might be a good place to start future research." Nick raised his eyebrows and started to smile again. "I never thought I'd get that much support. Seriously I had meant to do this during my off duty time. I do not want this to affect my duties in sickbay in any way. Especially with all these physicals we have to do." As he mentioned this he hoped he'd still be able to put off his own physical for at least another week. But his hopes were not very high. "We've gone to yellow alert," sighed DJ. "I don't think now is the time to worry about physicals. We'll start them up again once the alert is cancelled." She glanced at the PADD she was carrying. "When that happens, your next patient will be Lieutenant Dent." The CMO again turned her attention to Nick. "I'll finish reviewing your report and speak to command about the Rixian project. I'll let you know what they say as soon as I find out." DJ started to walk away. After taking a few steps, she looked over her shoulder and grinned at Nick. "In the meantime, you're on Mimi's physical list. So you'll be her next patient." Nick had just been about to smile but it didn't make it to his lips. He had a sudden urge to bang his head on his desk but resisted. He sighed instead. "My fate is sealed then, I suppose," he said trying to sound as dramatic as possible, looking like a man who is led to the gallows. He couldn't help grinning as he watched DJ walk away. At least he still had the time to have another coffee.
  5. Oh boy I was there every single week and now that it's party time I couldn't make it. Life's just not fair!
  6. milk
  7. Does that mean I cannot come? :(
  8. Welcome to STSF Joe. I hope to be simming with you soon. Have fun.
  9. Nick left the chief's office and walked to the replicator. "Coffee, black." On the way to the desk he passed Mimi and smiled. The smile quickly faded as he remembered the unavoidable physical. He hated doctors. At this thought he had to grin. Alright, he hated consulting doctors. He just hoped the scans would not show that he had not been sleeping much lately. It was nothing he was worried about and so far only an inconvenience. The insomnia didn't interfere with his work and only had an influence on his daily intake of caffein. So he was not eager to have anyone suggest making further tests. As he sat down behind the desk and tried to find a spot to put down his mug Nick became desperate. He had promised to send Dr. McKinny the final report of the Rixian Plague research project. It would take him hours to find it. What did she want it for anyway? The Rixians had long since departed and they had had to admit defeat. He sighed and started searching the various piles of PADDs. After a while he found it and couldn't help re-reading the report before sending it to DJ. He could still feel the frustration over not finding a cure. Suddenly he had an idea. He would ask permission to continue the research during his off duty time. He shrugged and told himself that after all everybody needed a "hobby". While sending the report Nick thought about the meeting he had just had with his new chief. All in all it had gone well. It had been nothing out of the ordinary; The normal questions to get to know the staff. So far he thought that they would get along fine. He yawned and reached out for his mug to drink some of his coffee. Then he reached our for another PADD hoping the guys from engineering would be able to retrieve the data that was damaged. If not he would probably be stuck at the desk for years not getting the chance to see a single patient during that time.
  10. Vodka...now that reminds me of some long nights and rather bad mornings. Nontheless not bad stuff at all.
  11. Modern, Cool Nerd 69 % Nerd, 60% Geek, 26% Dork For The Record: You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd. Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)! Congratulations!
  12. Seiben you're getting slow. It took you almost a day to answer. We're all getting older, eh? :)
  13. Welcome to STSF. Have fun and enjoy dying in the academies.
  14. Happy Birthday George!
  15. I am as proud to say that I have never in my life touched beer in a can.
  16. Of course every one knows. I always try to convince those few non-Trekkies who have never seen a single episode of any show that Star Trek can change your life. Somehow they don't really believe me. A lot of people know I'm simming, too. I get strange looks but it's worth it. At least then I can discuss alien anatomy with those fellow Trekkies around.
  17. Doesn't that list make you see the positive sides about yourself? I think most of it is true. And to answer Van Roy...ever noticed that you get beer cans, too? I mean not that it is as good as the one in bottles but if you just drink it for the sake of piling the cans...
  18. Well now it looks like I won't be able to make it. We had somewhat of a crisis and well...I'll be stuck with my parents doing family stuff. Real life's more important than simming after all.
  19. I already reserved the computer, bought some pepsi and chips and arranged for my parents to be out for dinner. ::sitting at the computer staring at the clock hoping it will show 9pm soon::
  20. Someone move that report button please I almost reported Images. I'm not north american so I get to see football about twice a year. Needless to say I don't have a favourit team. I do however like to watch the game but I never quite understood why a game that is mostly played with your hands should be called football. But then...what do I know?
  21. Don't worry neither do we. Just have fun and check out the stuff Seiben mentioned. Hope to be simming with you soon!
  22. Welcome aboard! Does it matter whether you die or not as long as you have fun?
  23. Happy Birthday!
  24. Nick was still trying to reduce the pile of PADDs. "Hemorrhoids... poor guy!" There were more exciting things to do in life than writing a report on someone's hemorrhoids but right now he was glad nothing was happening. It seemed to him that something exciting on Aegis included serious injuries, destruction, death or all of those. He sighed as he put down the PADD and looked across the room, leaning back in his chair. Images was sitting at another desk obviously repairing medical equipment. Thinking about their conversation Nick wondered why Victor had told him so much about his present problems. After all he, Nick was nothing more than an acquaintance. Anyway, all he hoped was that the two of them would get along fine. Victor seemed the most likely candidate to ask if he wanted to have a beer and relax at Drankum's. Nick turned back to the PADDs. The pile had considerably diminished since he had first started. He estimated it would take him another hour, maybe two to get through. Picking up the next PADD he sighed. "Diarrhea... oh boy!"
  25. Just walked out of Drankum's. Thanks folks for coming and I hope we'll be simming another 10 years and have even more fun doing so!
