  2. you tube --> hawaii 5-0 and first contact. best video mashup ever. and good music to boot!
  3. its good because there is less reports to do when someone dies than if someone _almost_ dies.
  4. Happy b-day!
  5. if you are the first one affected, this might not be a bad advice either...
  6. happy birthday!
  7. nothing like snow in june to keep things interesting... stupid weather.
  8. oh yes, one other quick blurb that i'm sure lots of people noticed. the fight scene on the drilling platform, the music was a very well done re-worked piece of TOS fight music. it was great! so to summarize my feelings on the film, loved the nostalgic elements, some technical aspects (that had to do with the plot driving elements) didn't like it as much. but overall, i'd give it a solid "what are you waiting for!? see the movie!"
  9. geeze... i kept reading and reading this thread waiting for someone to mention this, hoping i wasnt the first! i was sitting there, and did exactly the same thing, saw sulu, kirk, and some nameless red shirt... i wispered to my friend "that guy in the red, you know he's gonna die very shortly", and i laughed to myself. like you, i didn't hear anyone else snickering when they saw the guy, and when he got vaporized, i cant say i was looking around, but i would imagine some shock from the crowd that they would kill off the guy with the explosives. now with that said, i can go on to my complaints (a few)... i had no back story on the reasons for the new movie, nor the idea of this "reboot" of the series, so i did have some preconceived ideas before reading this thread: - could have made it a quick "back to the original timeline" by having it revert back to pre-kelvin destruction, a-la voyager year of hell. but the reasons for it, now that i know it, does seem quite reasonable. but i'm a person, that enjoys seeing an alternate timeline, like just having one straight linear timeline. - what was with the warp!?!? argh! as previously mentioned, one does not leave a system at warp speeds, and more irritating, enter a system at warp speeds. when they exited warp in titans atmosphere, i was in a state of disbelief. i know they can calculate positions of planets and such, so they not smash into them at absurd speeds, but what about shuttles etc that might be in the area. i had a slight problem with it. i was going to add a few more, but i think i'll stop for there. just some macguffins seemed a little stretched, even for star trek. loved the characters, and now i laugh a little bit more at the onion's report on the film. "if i wanted to see young attractive people doing cool, exciting things, i'll watch sports."
  10. i was always wondering where that spaceballs reference came from... i'm too young to remember that branding... i'm going to borger king right after arcadia tonight to get me some cups! i havent seen them either. i'm going to get the "special cut" just to listen to the debate about the andorian ambassador!
  11. i just watched the futurama episode "where no fan has gone before" (not for the first time, just first time noticing this), and noticed that welshy's wearing a red shirt. he was doomed the minute he joined up with the cast! the actors should really read the fine print of the contracts they sign, and it it doesn't specifically outline it, they should have them write in what colour of uniform they will be wearing.
  12. To: Captain Lo'Ami; Commander Alces CC: Lt. Commander Marx RE: Unauthorized container brought on board Sirs, as you know, Lt. Malik and myself have been researching possible entry points of this unknown substance, and we have located one definate possibility. After our departure from Axrekrav, we had picked up several scientists that were to be transported to Nevuluz III. One of the scientists, Dr. Hatch, had brought aboard a small 30 cubic centimeter container that was not declared. I have since contacted Dr. Hatch regarding the contents of the container, and he indicated that it contained a small colony of nanites, which he was developing in response to a patient with obsessive compulsive disorder and severe allergies. His patient was required to live in a sanitized environment, and could not live outdoors. These nanites would consume dust particles and other stray fibers to keep the environment clean. His research indicates that the nanites are susceptible to abnormal mutations if exposed to extremely high levels of gamma radiation, similar to those found in supernovas. I forwarded the scans of the Aether system, and he indicated that the levels would be sufficient to induce these unknown mutations. I have attached the specifications that the Doctor has forwarded to me to assist with locating them, although he warns that it is likely that any or all of these specifications have changed as a result of the mutation. 13. oddly enough this was mentioned to me by some friends "twitter is the new facebook". i was super reluctant to even latch on to facebook, and frankly, i still dont do too much with it. but to me it seems like the exact same thing, especially with all the people with smart phones, they are constantly updating their status, and to me it is essentially the same (as i understand it). maybe its just that i really dont have any desire to find out what my friends are doing every few hours. i can usually sum it up in one word "work". i remember one foxtrot comic that turned twitter into a very funny extreme, and showing it to be very useful! http://www.gocomics.com/foxtrot/2009/03/22/ just my 3 and a half cents.
  14. i hate that screen... the best i can ever do is try and string together clips loaded on youtube much-much later on, and hope i can watch them before they are removed by cease and desist orders. i've been watching ds9 reruns that way.
  15. memo: "due to budget cuts, recession, and rising fuel costs, all motorcycle racers will now train at their local playground. injuries sustained from kids beating you up will not be covered by our insurance policy."
  16. longest caption contest post. ever.
  17. very early this morning, i woke up, and had an urge to read about raid drives. 3 hours later, i was reading about thomas cook (the guy). how did i manage to go from reading about modern day computing to some guy in the 1800s that arranged travel for the wealthy? well let me take you through my flow of events on wikipedia! raid drives --> hamming code --> bit parity --> punch cards --> perfins --> postage stamps --> collection of stamps --> collecting cancelled stamps --> railway post offices --> registered mail --> queens (kings) messengers --> some plane crash in south america where said kings messenger died --> said dead guy used to work for the thomas cook travel agency. and there you have it. and if you want to read a little more about each topic, allow me to summarize: raid drives - a method of storing data on computers hamming code - has to do with bit checking ability (parity) bit parity - is an error detecting method used by computers punch cards - used by early computers for programs perfins - little holes made in stamps to prevent theft of stamps postage stamps/collection of stamps - duh. collecting cancelled stamps - apparently when the post office makes those marks on the stamps to invalidate them, some people like collecting it. railway post office - about the train cars, and the mail sorting process while en route registered mail - mail that must be signed for, and generally has a chain of custody along the way to the recipient. queen's/king's messenger - a sort of diplomatic courier. a one person registered mail system guy. plane that crashed - the "star dust" dead guy - paul simpson. all that from reading about one little article on wikipedia about raid drives. now i have that much more useless information to share with the world.
  18. thats what i think about. how do we know we have not already passed into a black hole, and although slightly differently than kansas, we are in the singularity of a black hole that we know to be our 'universe'? how would we be able to detect past the event horizon to see that there is more out there, if we cannot look through it? oh yes, and i switched my auto/home/galaxy collision insurance to geico and saved a bundle! i'm thinking of getting volcano insurance next week.
  19. looks like it drops off a little there... i'll just peddle a little closer to take a look...
  20. everyone knows a black cat is unlucky, and your doomed if your wearing a star fleet red-shirt, but a black cat wearing a red-shirt... no good can come of this.
  21. This starts a little before the end of the last sim, and ends just as the next one begins. ----------------------------------------------- Tom was just getting into the Aetherian system, expecting to find that the research expedition was almost complete. "Shuttlecraft Canberra to Arcadia. I am just entering the system now; request permission to dock." A few seconds passed before a response was received. "Canberra, welcome back. Permission granted to dock in shuttle bay 2. Lt. Servo, please be advised that a situation appears to have developed on the station, and it would be advisable to return promptly. A security team is currently being assembled." Tom was wondering what could have transpired with such a technically advanced culture that would require security to attend. "Acknowledged." As the shuttle continued on its path to Arcadia, Tom initiated a data link with the security and tactical databases on board, and skimmed over the recent history entered in. He was able to gather the overview of the mission being prepared. He piloted the shuttle into the bay and as soon as he exited the shuttle, he contacted Malik, "Servo to Malik, I just got back, I'll be joining you at the port shortly."
  22. Tom had just finished a refreshing shower, after being quietly transported back to his shuttle. He had already started his trip back to the Arcadia, when he sat down at the console, there was a very quiet piano concerto playing in the background. As he got comfortable, he closed his eyes and thought about the past few weeks and refreshed his memory as to what he needed to include in his report. "Computer, begin report to Starfleet Internal Security, and encrypt." "On stardate 50901.05, I arrived at the Jaros, and met with the subject. After a week and a half, I was able to build enough trust with the subject to gain information from him. The attached people...", Tom paused for a second to transfer the people that M'Gaugh had mentioned to him into the report, "are alleged to be involved in the information smuggling scheme. M'Gaugh claims that information is not actually accessed at all. The memory cores are physically removed during routine maintenance, and while the core is out, the holographic patterns used to store the information is scanned and copied onto a smaller, portable memory module. Once the maintenance is complete, the accomplice that has the memory module, scans it using an offline device, and spends the time to decrypt any useful information, and discards the rest. Once enough information is compiled, or a critical piece of information is obtained, it is transferred to M'Gaugh to send to his handler. It appears that M'Gaugh is the only one that has made contact, and the only one that knows the extent of his operation. "Computer, pause report." Tom stopped for a second, to gather his thoughts, as well as to take a little mental rest. He still sat, slightly slumped with his eyes closed, listening to his music, as the notes progressed he associated colours with the rising music, then as it peaked, it became more vibrant. The descending notes he often imagined being ripples in the water. He always thought to himself, music tells a story, and whenever you listen to a story, you have images in your head. For Tom, classical music without words often manifested itself in colours and shapes. A few minutes passed, and Tom felt refreshed enough to continue. "Computer continue report. The subjects listed are primarily engineers, with two security engineers that were contacted if they found higher security files. All of them have contacted each other, although not directly, and they would not know each other if they were to meet in person. "Once M'Gaugh had a memory module, he would break it into smaller pieces, and then piggyback them onto diplomatic transmissions that were relayed through his post to his handler. It is unknown if the diplomatic transmissions were legitimate, or merely created to allow M'Gaugh to covertly send his data. "M'Gaugh claims not know his handler, but has confirmed that his handler knows that he has been apprehended. "The logistics of the insertion proceeded as planned, and there were no incidents of note. The signal to Jaros' commander did not complete as smoothly as anticipated. Recommend for future missions with this commander be avoided if possible, however if necessary, to brief him more thoroughly without jeopardizing the mission. "Computer. End report." Tom opened his eyes for the first time since he sat down. He checked over the console, poked a few buttons and ensured they were still on the right path back to Arcadia, then closed his eyes again. "Computer, increase volume to level 8." As the music got louder, he could begin to see himself sitting in the middle of the concert hall as he travelled back to the ship.
  23. driver: "oh! look at the time, its time for my union approved lunch break. this is someone else's problem now! i'm outta here!"
  24. As was predicated, soon after he arrived on Starbase 143, Tom was met by security, and was escorted to a holding cell where they conducted various informal interviews with him. Tom knew what they were looking for; information that could be forwarded to their Chief of Security so that they could say that they contributed to the furtherance of intelligence gathering. Tom provided them with tidbits of data that would never be of any use to anyone, but gave them the sense that they were making a difference. He certainly did not want to provide them with blatantly false information that may cause the officers to be blamed for collecting inaccurate information. He briefly considered the number of times he had done that particular routine on a prisoner himself, and then thought if any of those times, there was someone on the other side of that forcefield doing the same thing he was doing at that very moment. Tom provided no doubt to anyone that he talked to that he was one hundred percent guilty of the crime for which he was tried for and cooperated fully with anyone with any questions in regards to his crime. After the eager security staff got their information, he rested for a few hours in the holding cell, as transportation was being arranged for him to be sent to Jaros II. The transfer to Jaros was not nearly as interesting as Tom was hoping for, the officers conducting the transfer had done this a hundred times before, and were not interested in any conversation that the prisoners would provide them with. Once they arrived at Jaros, Tom was being checked in with two other prisoners that were on the same transport as him. The admitting guard called out a name, "Marcus Penzie!" Tom immediately snapped his gaze up from the ground 2 feet in front of him to the guard. "Yes!" he blurted out. It was a response that he had practiced in his mind. The anticipated-surprise response as he called it. "What is your number?" The guard asked. "827571", Tom replied. The guard made a couple notations, then called out another name, "Lanzik E'Rtty!" This person, presented himself, and answered the same questions as Tom had moments earlier. The last prisoner on the transport was called out, " M'Gaugh LaGugh!" He replied in the same manner, but Tom took notice. He did not look right over at LaGugh to identify him, but rather ignored him as though he was another nobody prisoner sent to this penal colony for punishment. It was not until they proceeded to their assigned areas before he even glanced at LaGugh. As Tom and LaGugh settled into their bunks, Tom asked LaGugh, "What are you here for?"
  25. elephant: hey, whats going on in here?
