  1. The sun beat down heavily on San Francisco, the climate unusually warm this year due to a slight heatwave in the California area. The shuttle bay at Starfleet Academy was bustling today with the arrival of many new cadets. Some of them were here to begin their 4 year academic studies, some were here for the admissions exam. Regardless of their reasons, they were here and it was incredibly hard to move around without walking into someone or something, a situation only further complicated by the heatwave. “Freshman cadets, please report to Meeting Point A” called a well dressed man on a small podium. His uniform showed he was an officer, an engineering officer at that and the pips on his collar showed him to hold the rank of Lieutenant. A second officer, a woman on the other side of the hangar called out: “Those here for the examinations, please report to me at Meeting Point B”. There was now a rush of people as everyone milled around to their appropriate stations. Taylor Kiran, a young Trill was here as a Freshman but he was inducted in to the Academy on a vocational scholarship. He would be studying the syllabus of the Academy but instead of full time study, he would be stationed on a Starfleet vessel where he would be taught as an apprentice and learn on the job. This had become more common for cadets who specialised in the more hands on roles at Starfleet, after all, hearing lectures on how to cure Andorian shingles isn’t quite the same as having to deal with the illness itself under pressure. He had arrived here at the Academy to pass the final few tests to achieve the final credits he needed before he could be assigned to his new vessel. As such, he was a little unsure whether he would need to head to Meeting Point A or B. With a shrug, he grabbed his bags and headed over to the female officer who looked over to him and smiled. “Can I help you, Cadet?” the betazoid woman asked with a smile as she noticed Taylor approach. He looked up. “I’m unsure of where to go, I’m here for the extra credit program, I’m Taylor K...” he went to say and she nodded and looked at her clipboard. “Cadet Kiran, yes, yes, I’ve been expecting you. You’re the one for vocational training, you’ll come with me.” she confirmed as she checked off his name on her list. As a joined trill, Taylor retained all the memories of his symbiont Kiran. Kiran had previously only had one host and do for a Trill, Taylor was young intellectually. Though Kiran’s previous host, a girl names Janathar, had served on the USS Sabre as a Lieutenant, a new host must live their own life and as such, Taylor was expected to live his own life and to achieve his own ranks. A few moments later, the female officer led her group through to a dormitory area of the Academy, a set of 2 large dorms, one for males, one for females. Taylor walked in to the dorm and looked around, seeing the bunk beds and desks around. He would only be here a short time so the lack of his own quarters didn’t bother him. He chose the lower bunk nearest to the window and placed his bags down, laying down on the bunk and relaxing a moment, pulling out a datapad to check his schedule for the next few days, noting that in just an hour’s time, he was due to attend his first of 3 examinations. “Medical Apparatus Finals”, then tomorrow he would study “Basic Vessel Standards” and “Tricorder Approval” exams. Once he had completed these three tests, he would be given his assignment and sent to the vessel chosen for him. He better get ready.... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Well done Cadet, you correctly diagnosed Ankaran Flu and treated it correctly. You’ve passed this test.” an older lady said with a smile, handing the Trill a form with his grades and pass certification. Taylor smiled as he took it. He was only 2 steps away now from reaching certification. For now though, he was going to go and study at the library. The first exam he had tomorrow was the one he was the most worried about. Basic Vessel Standards covered everything from ship etiquette to security protocols and there was a LOT that could be covered in the examination. As he walked towards the library, he started mentally making a list of the topics he needed to go over, his weaknesses and just the topics he felt would DEFINITELY be covered. The Academy Library was a large room with many consoles that could be used for research. He took a seat at one and started looking over security protocols first. This evening would be a long one and he was glad the library had a replicator, that Atruvian Coffee would be incredibly useful..... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He’d done it...he’d passed all three exams and with one of the highest scores the Academy had ever seen in the Medical examination. Proudly, the young Trill grabbed his bags and headed out of the dormitory, saying goodbye to some of the cadets he had met and made friends with. With a spring in his step, he walked out into the corridor and headed to the office of the head administrator, Commander Narrath. As he approached the officer, the Commander was just about to enter himself and as such, beckoned Taylor to follow him in. “Take a seat Cadet” he advised, pointing to a seat at the desk, sitting in his own executive chair behind it, loading up the details of the cadet’s assessments and assignments on his console. Taylor did as he was told and took a seat in the chair, a little nervous to be in front of the Commander but he put on a brave face. “Thanks Sir”. he said, politely, to which the Commander nodded. Commander Narrath was a tall man, dark skinned and had an air of superiority around him, he was friendly though. “Cadet, you’ve passed every test we’ve given you and done so with integrity and respect. I’m happy to tell you that you’ve got enough credits to enter the shipboard training program.” he said, offering his hand for a handshake which Taylor gladly took. “Thank you Sir, I’m really excited” he confirmed. “Good to hear it, I hope that excitement will turn into determination, we need more good men like you in Starfleet. Soon you will report to your first job, as a midshipman aboard Sky Harbor Aegis. You will report directly to the First Officer, Wes Roberts. He will oversee your first day before you meet with the Captain, Chirakis. You will join their medical team and finish your training there. It will be up to Chirakis and her team to decide when you have learned enough to achieve officer status. I wish you well and remember, you’re an ambassador for this academy and you should carry yourself as such.” he said proudly as he stood, shaking the boy’s hand. “You’re dismissed, midshipman Kiran” Taylor smiled as he turned to leave. First assignment was Aegis, not what he had expected but he was excited to work with such a big team on such an important platform. The journey starts now as he headed to the shuttle bay to board a shuttle to Aegis. It would be a long trip but his last in a while. He was to become a crewman, part of a team and the future was limitless.
