Mobile Simming: Introducing SmartPhone access to our chat rooms

As some of you may noticed, there are new permanent chat rooms named for most of the Advanced sims. This is part of our latest upgrade, SmartPhone access to our chat rooms! The GM Council has considered the pro's and con's and decided that we should offer this to our sims to help some of the more mobile players (and even GMs) to make their scheduled sims. Here are the basics:

  • It only works with a permanent room.
  • It works for the iPhone/iPad and the Droid system. we do not think it will work for Blackberry, but we are still investigating that.
  • There are some limitations to the SmartPhone access (no scrolling up, PMs are hidden, member list is all combined), but if you just can't be home for you sim, but *would* be able to have the time to log in via your phone, it will let you play.
  • The folks at AddOn Chat promise more upgrades over time and I will let everyone know about them as I get the info.

Attached is a PDF document with specific instructions and screen shots. If you are unable to look at or download the Adobe document, I will also post the steps with their images following this message. Thanks and Happy Simming!

  • In order to utilize Mobile Simming, your login name and chat name must be the same. You can make a request on the boards for this to be changed if you need it.
  • From an Android or iPhone/iPad, navigate to the Chat page at the web site (www.stsf.net/chats.php) and click on the regular link to enter the chat rooms

  • You will see a different icon instead of the usual Java startup. Click it to enter the rooms.

2.jpg

  • You will be able to enter your chat name, your password and select the room to enter.
  • The only rooms available are the permanent ones; you will not be able to use this interface to enter a user-created room.
  • If you enter your chat name or password incorrectly, you be moved to the Boards.
  • You cannot switch between rooms once you enter, you will have to exit entirely and come back in to select a different room.

  • When you tap the room name, you will see a list of available rooms, choose your destination and tap “Sign In”

4.jpg

  • The chat room functions like the normal interface, but you cannot scroll up once text has rolled past the top of the chat window. The arrow in the upper left corner exits to the Boards.

  • Below is the Settings screen where you can alter text color, font size as well as other options.

6.jpg

  • Below is the player list screen where you can see everyone simming in all chat rooms at the time, it does not separate players by room.

7.jpg

  • When you receive a private message, the PM icon will flash briefly, this is the only notification you will see. Below is the PM screen where you can tap on anyone’s name that has PMs currently open with you.

8.jpg

  • Once you open the PM you will be able to have a private conversation with the other player, but you won’t be able to see the main chat room window. You can return to the PM list or close the PM from this view.

Beg to politely differ on a couple points.

  • From an Android or iPhone/iPad, navigate to the Chat page at the web site (www.stsf.net/chats.php) and click on the regular link to enter the chat rooms

Last I checked, you could sign in by typing your chat name, if different from your board login. You can also sign into the board with your original login, and enter the chat under that account via the link on the board (while viewing the board in "full version" on an iPhone, at any rate). Neither require changing logins and/or chat names to be the same. Not sure if logins can contain spaces like chat names, so this might be convenient for those who don't want to change their chat names. (Would like to know more on what's allowed in a login before I consider changing?)

When entering from the board, you won't see a list of available rooms, but you can still navigate rooms by typing the basic IRC /join command into the message window (e.g. /join Manticore). You'll need to enclose rooms with spaces in quotes (e.g. /join "Comanche Creek") and include the preceding dot on the lobby, holodeck, and ready room. Once you've entered a room, you can also switch to another room via /join without signing out and back in (and this works whether you signed in via the board or the website link). If I'm not mistaken, I've also used /join to join the user-created rooms, if I knew the name.

It only works if your phone has Java. Unfortunately that's not something you can download onto a smartphone. It was either embedded into your hardware by the manufacturer or it was not.
