Problems with Chat

I have been having so many problems with this chat! ARGH! I changed my browser 4 times since starting simming, and now none of them are working... it keeps on asking me to download a Java plugin, and I do, and then it says I haven't installed. But then I go to do it again, and it says its already installed! ARGH! When I tried on Chrome it froze up my entire computer, and afterwards I went and reformatted my entire computer, and trying this new browser, but its doing it too.

I'm starting to think that its me. :[

I am very sad because I miss my crew. Sorry guys. I seem to just have a magnet for computer troubles. ::cries::

Any help and/or suggestions?

Sorry to hear that you're having problems. Fortunately, given sim was canceled tonight, you didn't miss much. Webbie or someone more technically inclined might be able to help you better than I can. But I've got a few basic suggestions: Make sure you've got the latest flash updates and that java is actually enabled in your browser. You said you just reformatted, so this might be redundant but you could also try clearing out your cookies.

Good luck; hope you're able to figure it out.

Do you have firewall port restrictions in place on your ISP? Some ISPs might block the ports used by the chat rooms. Once you've installed Java as well, you might need to restart your browser as well.

I think I might have encountered chat weirdness. While simming, I kept having issues with my lines not being sent to the room.

Couldn't figure it out at first, then realized I tend to use <these symbols to type OOC thoughts> and it looked as if the chat wouldn't process the lines when they were bracketed by the bracket arrows.

Also, at one point the lines were sent to the room, with the brackets, and my name appeared in the chat - but no words appeared.

Love the new layout though! It's really nice.

No, no firewall restrictions... I have been able to get on before, its just recently that's been giving me problems. I'm starting to think that its my computer, as upstairs on Ubuntu everything seems to be running fine.

I like simming on my laptop because then I'm not secluded from my family, as our sim is early in the night for me. I wish I could just do it on my phone, but even that isn't that advanced. Sigh.

I will keep on trying different things until it works I suppose. Will keep you all posted.

Please contact me either e-mail or on FB. I may have some solutions for you. It's a JAVA update.

You need to switch from OpenJDK to the Sun java jre. Sun java 6. By default Ubuntu uses OpenJDK and icedtea as their Chromium/Chrome plugin.

Instructions will depend on which Ubuntu you are running. (Lucid, Meerkat, etc..)

After looking into it with another login oand chromium: OpenJDK will put you into the chat as "idle" through the boards that will stall to load. If you log into the website with the same credentials it will glitch and show the same name in duplicate or your actual login name with your display name. The issue is OpenJDK.

BTW: Thanks for the overnight nuke on posting access since I was testing to locate the issue with Iasone's login that was not similar to display name. I actually find it amusing that you nuked that account when someone was just looking to help one of your members. Not much has changed I see. Love you too. :)

This also can apply to anyone having issues running Minecraft on certain *nix distros that default to OpenJDK.

Sincerely,

Kate Iasone

P.S. Mobeus Chronox said "Internet is serious business." so I wish you good luck with your "serious business."

No offense, but I don't think the issue was with Ubuntu. She implied the problem was on her laptop; probably either Windows or Mac.

Soora, it might help if we knew what operating system your laptop is running.

I noticed that Rosetto posted here saying he had some possible fixes. Did they work? If so, you can probably disregard the following.

Have you tried completely uninstalling java or still have older versions of java on your computer? Keeping older versions of java can cause issues. For instructions, go here: http:// www.java.com /en/download/uninstall.jsp This page should detect older versions; try removing only those first. If that doesn't fix the issue, completely uninstall java and reinstall the latest version.

When all else fails:

If you're running Windows Vista or 7, you might want to look into disabling TCP autotuning. Normally it should improve your network connection, but it can also cause problems: slow connections, inability to load all or some pages, issues with POP3 servers and failures in java applets. I don't know how much you know about computers; sorry if I seem patronizing while explaining the steps.

First, I suggest copying these down on paper or into notepad; this could negatively affect your network connection and you'll need to know how to undo any changes you'll make. (Note: 'ctrl-v' to copy-paste will not work in cmd, but you should be able to right-click with your mouse and select 'paste'. If not, you'll have to type it out.)

1. Run command prompt as an administrator.

Quickest way is to type 'cmd' in 'start search' on your start menu; cmd should show up under 'programs'. Right click and select 'run as administrator'. Click 'continue' at the Windows 'User Account Control' prompt. (Note: You can't adjust TCP autotuning without administrator privileges. If you get an error message, 'requested operation requires elevation', exit and re-enter cmd as an administrator.)

2. Type the following into command prompt: netsh interface tcp show global

If you see the following: '***The above autotuninglevel setting is the result of Windows Scaling heuristics overriding any local/policy configuration on at least one profile', you'll need to disable heuristics first.

Type: netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled

If accepted, cmd will display: OK

3. Type: netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled

You can verify the setting worked by typing netsh interface tcp show global again. (Labeled as: Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level)

If this works, you can also try other levels of TCP autotuning, such as 'highlyrestricted' or 'restricted' (netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=highlyrestricted or netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=restricted).

Note that completely disabling autotuning might cause issues with faster broadband connections. If you don't see an improvement or see a decrease in overall network performance, you'll probably want to return TCP autotuning to 'normal' (netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal). To reset heuristics, type: netsh int tcp set heuristics default

Again, good luck! Let us know the results.

Hmm, I'm not sure if this was aimed at STSF admin, but if so, I'm confused. None of your posts have been "nuked" and the Kate Iasone account is showing as active. If you are referring to unregistered accounts being unable to post or enter the chat room, we did just tighten our procedures on this. The reason was because of a sharp increase in SPAM bots that were flooding us with account setups and then posting annoying, pornographic and/or sales e-mails.

And... if this wasn't pointed at STSF, please excuse the interruption.
