His parents were stationed there at the time as researchers, and as such, Paul spent much of his childhood traveling to various isolated islands. At the age of 6, his parents felt that Paul needed a more stable platform to grow up, and they relocated to Denver where his parents took up teaching positions at the University. Messner applied to Starfleet as soon as he met the minimum requirements out of secondary school, and although he was quite intelligent, did not excel in classes as he did not apply himself very well. He found that the long hours in class were boring and had a hard time concentrating. During testing however, he proved himself to be an above average student. It was established early on in his time at the Academy that he would be destined for a more physical position as opposed to an intellectual one, and he selected elective courses that reflected that.
